WHAT’S HAPPENING AT DSRC

August 2017 - MCSS announced the introduction of BlueJeans as the primary developmental services videoconferencing

provider, and expands it to welcome new agencies to use ministry-funded videoconferencing services.

There has also been much change with the provincial videoconferencing program over the years, and we have embarked on the greatest transformation yet. Over the past two years, the Community Networks of Specialized Care (CNSC) have been evaluating and piloting alternative platforms for videoconferencing over and above the current provider, the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN). Ultimately, the evaluation of other videoconfer-encing platforms and a pilot successfully illustrated that OTN is no longer the only videoconferencing bridging service that can facilitate reliable access to services, for people with developmental disabilities and their families.

Throughout the summer of 2017 videoconferencing sites across the province migrated to the BlueJeans cloud based videoconferencing platform. BlueJeans is a secure cloud based videoconferencing platform that will seamlessly deliver interactive video-conferencing opportunities across the province that can be supported on current room based videoconferencing systems in addition to a multitude of devices – desktop/laptop, Android tablets and phones, iPhone /iPad and as easy as using a web browser.

For more information on this great opportunity, please contact the Central Community Networks of Specialized Care, Regional Videoconferencing Coordinators:

FALL SUPPORT GROUPS AT DSRC

The Fathers’ Support Group

As you may be aware, there has been an increasing awareness regarding the spread of infectious germs (i.e., flu viruses and colds) and pests (i.e., bed bugs, head lice). We at DSRC want to make sure that we are keeping you and our staff safe

from the spread of these “unwanted guests”.

If you are ill or have something that may be passed on to others, please let us know so that we can reschedule your appointment. Thank you for helping us keep everyone healthy!

The Mothers’ Support Group

The Mothers’ Support Group at DSRC is an 8 week group, providing the opportunity for Mothers to discuss a range of topics related to parenting a child with an intellectual disability and /or autism. Topics include understanding and sharing the diagnosis, grief and resilience, interacting with schools, behavioural challenges and self-care. Guest speakers from the community and DSRC also contribute their expertise. The group is a great way to connect with other Mothers who understand your daily experience.

The Mothers’ Support Group is a small group, for 6 – 8 members, and runs for 8 consecutive weeks, on Tuesday morning or Wednesday evening.

Groups are offered 2 – 3 times per year.

The group is open, but a referral is required.

To make a referral for a mother of a child 17 years of age or younger call 519-741-1121 and ask for the Intake Worker. To make a referral for a mother of a child 18 years of age or older call Developmental Services Ontario Central West Region at 519-894-1153, Ext. 2907.

The group is open, but a referral is required.

To make a referral for a father of a child 17 years of age or younger call 519-741-1121 and ask for the Intake

Worker.

To make a referral for a father of a child 18 years of age or older, call Developmental Services Ontario Central West

Region at 519-894-1153, Ext. 2907.

The DSRC Fathers’ group meets monthly, at our Kitchener office.

It is a great opportunity for Dads to discuss a wide range of topics related to parenting a child with an intellectual disability and/or autism. Fathers learn from guest speakers as well as from each other, sharing wisdom, understanding and a chance to talk to other Dads who “Get it”.

Some of the topics discussed in the past year were Self-esteem, Sibling Issues and Social Opportunities in the Community. Speakers have brought knowledge about Anxiety, Planned Life Time Networks, Dad’s Camp and Navigating the School System.

The Fathers Group meets in the evening, on the 3rd

Tuesday of the month, at the Kitchener office.

RESOURCES

Province Increasing Supports that will Help Connect People with Developmental Disabilities to Local Programs and

Resources. Ontario is improving access to services for adults with developmental disabilities and their families by

finding better ways to connect them to supports available in their local community.

Dr. Helena Jaczek, Minister of Community and Social Services and Ted McMeekin, MPP, Ancaster--Dundas--

Flamborough--Westdale, were at Contact Hamilton, to announce supports and resources for adults with

developmental disabilities, including:

Hiring more Developmental Services Ontario staff, who help people with developmental disabilities find services

and supports in their community

Expanding the Adult Protective Service Worker program, which matches adults who have a developmental

disability and live on their own with a worker who helps them with their everyday living needs, access community

resources, and set and achieve goals

Increasing access to clinical professionals and specialized services at home and in the community for people with

an exceptional dual diagnosis or complex behavioural and medical needs

Helping more people gain work experience by partnering with the Ontario Disability Employment Network to better

coordinate services and increase capacity across developmental service agencies, Employment Supports service

providers, school boards and employers

Expanding family support networks, which are groups made up of caregivers who help give adults with develop-

mental disabilities and their families a sense of belonging and help connect them with appropriate services and

supports

Through these increased supports, people with developmental disabilities and their families will be better able to find

services in their communities -- for example housing solutions -- so that they can live as independently as possible.

These investments will also help system partners work better together to coordinate care for their clients.

Ontario will continue to work with people with developmental disabilities, their families and caregivers, agencies and

other community partners to increase connections, and help them best determine their own future.

Supporting adults with developmental disabilities is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people

in their everyday lives.

Autism in High School

The web-based guide

This resource guide was created to help students with

autism and their families navigate the transitions and

challenges of high school. The guide is divided into com-

mon transition periods. In each section, you will find de-

scriptions of common challenges, suggested questions

to help you plan for supports, and external resources for

further investigation. With generous funding from the

Sifton Family Foundation, this website was developed as

a joint initiative between Extend-A-Family, Waterloo Re-

gion Family Network, members of the former Autism

Services Waterloo Region, the Waterloo Region District

School Board, the Waterloo Catholic District School

Board, and the University of Waterloo.
