Improving Lives Through Immunization

OUR MISSIONThe Sabin Vaccine Institute makes vaccines more accessible, enables innovation and expands immunization across the globe.

OUR WORKAs a non-profit with more than two decades of experience, Sabin embodies the legacy of our namesake, Dr. Albert B. Sabin, inventor of the oral polio vaccine and lifelong crusader against poverty and preventable disease. Sabin is committed to extending the full benefits of immunization to all people, regardless of who they are or where they live.

Immunization Policy & Financing

Sabin works with key national decision makers to strengthen policy, secure financing and build political will for immunization. Many low- and middle-income countries depend on support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to fund their immunization programs. As these countries become more prosperous, they become ineligible for Gavi support, putting their immunization programs — and the health of their people — at risk. Sabin provides technical support and guidance to countries in the midst of this transition. Sabin works with countries to establish long-term, domestic financing for immunization, supporting country-led efforts to establish innovative financing arrangements, improve budget tracking and transparency, develop advocacy coalitions, and introduce legislation that strengthens and assures funding for immunization.

OUR IMPACT ®Strengthening immunization financing in 22 countries by providing technical support and guidance to government officials and parliamentarians

®Collaborating with the governments of Nigeria, Nepal, Uganda and Madagascar to develop and enact laws expanding and protecting funding for immunization

Introduction & Expansion of Vaccines

Sabin brings together national government officials, policy makers, immunization specialists, researchers and advocates to supply decision makers with the information they need to make evidence-based decisions on vaccines. As a trusted, third-party convener, Sabin unifies global efforts to establish best practices that help countries evaluate and streamline vaccine introduction and scale-up with the goal of accelerating access to new and under-utilized vaccines.

OUR IMPACT ®Establishing the burden of typhoid in developing countries through a large, landmark surveillance study

®Unifying the global health community on critical vaccine issues, including disease burden, vaccine impact and recommendations for introduction

Education & Training

Sabin helps countries build capacity and technical expertise to ensure every child receives the vaccines they need by: providing immunization professionals with skills and tools to improve vaccine access and delivery, and generating public support for vaccination by increasing knowledge among journalists and policy makers.

OUR IMPACT ®Training more than 175 immunization professionals to expand programs & communicate with media

®Driving more effective, accurate media coverage on vaccines in 18 countries by equipping journalists with a deeper understanding of the science of vaccines

Vaccine Confidence

Sabin is a leading voice on vaccine confidence, leveraging our global network of immunization professionals to identify and disseminate best practices to build immunization program resilience. Vaccine hesitancy poses a danger to unvaccinated children and to public health by leaving children vulnerable to serious diseases like measles, polio and diphtheria, and by reducing community or herd immunity, which is essential to keep such diseases out of a population.

OUR IMPACT ®Preparing immunization managers from 30 countries to advance vaccine acceptance and demand using proven communication strategies and tools

®Providing professionals with tactics, tools and resources to inoculate against misinformation by addressing behaviors and perceptions of vaccination

Research & Development

Sabin supports innovative technologies and approaches in vaccine research and development. For more than a decade, Sabin was part of a joint initiative with Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas, conducting research to develop new, low-cost vaccines for diseases impacting the world’s most neglected populations. Focusing on infectious and emerging diseases that have high human impact but may lack traditional market incentives, Sabin is committed to supporting research to identify innovative solutions that will improve the lives of millions through immunization.

OUR IMPACT

®Expanded local clinical trial capacity by working with insti-tutions in Brazil, Gabon and Uganda to perform clinical trials

®Advanced vaccine candidates for schistosomiasis, human hookworm disease and Chagas disease through clinical trials

The Sabin Vaccine Institute is a leading advocate for expanding vaccine access and uptake globally, advancing vaccine research and development, and amplifying vaccine knowledge and innovation. Unlocking the potential of vaccines through partnership, Sabin has built a robust ecosystem of funders, innovators, implementers, practitioners, policy makers and public stakeholders to advance its vision of a future free from preventable diseases. As a non-profit with more than two decades of experience, Sabin is committed to finding solutions that last and extending the full benefits of vaccines to all people, regardless of who they are or where they live. At Sabin, we believe in the power of vaccines to change the world.

Why Vaccines?Vaccines are one of the most successful health

innovations in recent history, but the world is

failing to reap the full benefits of immunization.

Childhood vaccination saves up to 3 million

lives every year, but 1.5 million people still die

each year from diseases that could have been

prevented by vaccines. One in seven children are

still missing out on basic vaccines.

Immunization is a best buy in global health,

with a return of $16 for every $1 spent on

immunization for the world’s poorest children.

When we account for broader economic and

social benefits, the return on investment is

much greater — up to 44 times the cost of

vaccination.

Despite the enormous health and economic

potential of vaccines, the world is failing to

meet immunization targets. In 2010, the Global

Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) set immunization

goals for all countries to achieve by 2020. The

world is currently off track on five out of six of

these goals.

Now is the time for urgent action to ensure

everyone benefits from the promise of

vaccines. This means supporting countries to

establish sustainable immunization programs to

reach every child.
