Juniors Miguel Flores, Daniel Cruz, Alexandro Dele-Torro Montes, Nelson Campos and sophomore Julian Padilla, Felix Laredo-Zarate each had assists. Freshman Augustus Hoff and junior Alexis Montoya combined for a stout defensive effort by limiting the Hornets to one goal on six shots.

Pasco has scored 62 goals in their first 13 games while only allowing 22 goals.

Weeki Wachee scored its lone goal on a header by senior Matthew Armstrong with 11 minutes remaining in the second half. Both junior Hunter Reid and head coach Shane Tarbox were penalized late in the second half.

the Pirates’ season with 50 goals and 14 assists to lead Pasco. Luna was the closest to her with 12 goals.

“I’m more than proud of these girls,” said Pasco coach Jose Hernandez. “They played their best. They played their hardest. They played with heart and soul, with passion. That’s all I ever want from my players.”

Reaches State CompetitionPublished March 23,

March 30 and April 27

It wasn’t much of a “9-Mile War” on the tennis court as the Pasco girls blanked Zephyrhills 7-0, raising their record to 10-0 on the year. It was also the team’s 24th straight win dating back to last season. Zephyrhills just did not know how to handle the Pirates awesome talent: No. 1 player was senior Kayleigh Heather, was 7-1 at the time; No. 2 Sitara Sriamm, a freshman, who was 9-0 ... as was the rest of the team – Nathalie Sawczuk, Madiosn Jender, Sally Campbell and Madison Hoyle. Pasco was in the same position March 2016 when in the final district

match Pasco and Eastlake finished in a virtual tie, forcing a play-off, which Pasco lost, 4-3.

This year, after edging East Lake by four points for the Class 3A, District 6 title, the Pirates (13-1) again beat the Eagles on April 20 in the 3A regional finals to earn their second-ever state berth. It came as no surprise that the region match came down to the No.2 doubles contest with the teams tied at 3.

Pirates Natalie Sawczuk and Madison Jender defeated Jayne Kawalec and Kendal Curtis 6-0, 6-2 to clinch the victory for host Pasco. In state competition Pasco battled a very tough team, Chiles High School from Tallahassee, but came up short and were unable to advance in the state championships.

Joey Ivie played his last game as a defensive stalwart on the Florida line in a program that produced among the most feared defensive units in the country.

In his four years anchoring the defensive live for the Gators, the hometown standout lined up against national champions, Heisman Trophy winners, future NFL first round selections, and several All-Americans.

“There were times in high school that I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to play in there (Raymond James Stadium) and now I’m actually playing in the Bucs stadium,” he said following the Outback Bowl in January. “It’s bittersweet, but great to be able to go out with a bang in there.”

And go out with a bang, he did. Ivie finished with five tackles, including one for a loss and one quarterback

hurry. In May he took calls from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones twice and head coach Jason Garrett. Jones informed Ivie that he was the 228th pick in the NFL draft. He signed a four-year, $2.48 million contract in May with a signing bonus of $86,489, but was waived in September before signing on to the Atlanta Falcons practice squad in October.

Competes At StatePublished Oct. 19 and Nov. 9

The Pasco High School boys golf team came in second place in the 2017 FHSSA Class 2A District 15 golf championship tournament, which was hosted by Zephyrhills. The two schools ended up in a playoff to determine the winner, which Zephyrhills won 23-25. But within a month the team finished in 15th place in the FHSAA state tournament with 744 strokes (+168). It was the first time

the Pirates have competed in the state tournament since 1999.

“We were hoping to finish in the top 10 [in the state tournament], but we still had a great year. We really didn’t think we would even make it,” said coach Micky Wilks.

Even though the tournament did not go as planned for the Pirates, the season as a whole showed improvement. Cade Darbyshire was the most improved Pirate, shaving about eight strokes off his game per nine holes. Gabriel Fleck, Cole Darbyshire and Christian Nieves also shot well throughout the season.

senior baseball players took the field at Bishop McLaughlin High School for the inaugural Fellowship of Christian Athletes East vs. West Classic. In a rain-shortened game the East squad,

featuring local players from Pasco, Zephyrhills and Zephyrhills Christian, came away with a 4-0 victory with Bulldog pitcher Dalton Gold getting the win on the mound. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes supported the East vs. West All Star football game in Pasco County for two seasons and this year they expanded the successful program to the baseball diamond. For Pasco’s Corey Mills, being a part of the squad was a huge thrill.

“It is truly an honor,” said Mills, who started the game playing first base. “With all the seniors I’ve played with all year on my team and now to play with all these guys is so much fun.”

Local players representing the east were Pasco’s Mills, Zach Balogh, Jackson Fiorelli; Zephyrhills’ Gold, Marcus Gonzalez, Austin Putz and ZCA’s Hunter Barber.

Finishes Third in StatesPublished Feb. 9

After a season of pouring in their blood, sweat and cheers, Pasco High School’s varsity cheerleading squad capped off their year by finishing third in the FHSAA State Competition. After

clearing the requirement of achieving a raw score of 60 points in the regionals, the squad of 20 was already on a high when they walked into states. The girls competed in the 1A Large Varsity team division and finished first out of five teams in the state semi-final competition.

The first place finish advanced them into the finals, competing against the other top two teams in Florida, where they eventually finished third. Although they would have preferred first or second place, head coach Dawn Wetherby said she and the team were “absolutely over the moon” with the results. Pasco’s JV Team also performed well this year.

Although they are not able to compete in the FHSAA regional or state competitions, they were able to get some competition experience in some smaller competitions and Best of Pasco in December and January, in which they placed in the top five twice.

the top young amateur fighters in the country. Though he lost 4-1, Gomez competed in the USA Boxing Junior Olympics Championships in Charleston, W.Va., and battled for a spot in the 140-145-pound weight class in his age group. He won the Junior Olympic national crown in Dallas, Texas last year in the intermediate class. Working with trainer Salvador Jaurequi in Dade City, Gomez won a state title and took the regional crown this year to qualify him for the Junior Olympics national tournament. His time in the ring stems from his upbringing and situations from his past in Lacoochee. Ultimately, his goal is to help his mother, Quiana Hambrick, and his sisters. “You have to have big dreams,” Jaurequi told him. “Take it one day at a time. You take the baby steps to get where you’re going,”

In winning the Florida State Police Athletic League Middleweight title fight, 20-year old Dade City boxer Ricardo Graham achieved more than some boxers have in their entire careers. Graham was a track and football player in high school while

at Pasco and Brooksville, but after graduating he decided it was time to pursue a different opportunity. “I couldn’t play football and I was trying to do something positive,” Graham said. “I always had athletic abilities and I walked past the gym and talked to Rob Mendez. He told me that if I wanted to box to come back and I was in the next day.” Along with fighting his way to the PAL title in Ft. Pierce on Nov. 4, Graham has had a number of accomplishments in the boxing world in the past year. He holds a career record of 8-1, with his only loss coming in the finals of the Florida Golden Gloves back in March. He has also won first place in the Georgia Nationals. The local hero has set his goals high, as he wants to travel to Japan and compete in the 2020 Olympics in boxing. His next fight is currently scheduled in January but that could change. You can follow Graham’s journey through his Instagram: RGFinesse, or his Facebook page: Ricardo Finesse Graham.

Published July 20

Troy and Darren Hambrick held their first football camp and about 30 players from ages 6 to 16 took advantage of

the advice and the agility and speed training of the Hambrick brothers. The local brothers were assisted by several other former NFL and NCAA football players. “We’re trying to give back. We want to keep these kids off the streets,” said Troy Hambrick, who played running back for the Dallas Cowboys. He now coaches at Pasco High School. “We want to give back to these kids, we want to relay our experiences with them to get them to the next level,” said Darren Hambrick, a former linebacker with the Cowboys. Greg Jenkins, who played wide receiver with the Oakland Raiders and the Jacksonville Jaguars, also helped with the camp. He became friends with the Hambrick brothers while attending Wesley Chapel High School from 2004-2008. The players who participated in the camp left with valuable lessons and training and the Hambrick brothers said they intend to continue the camp every season.

The stands were full at W.F. Edwards Stadium for the annual Junior vs Senior Powder Puff flag football game and the bragging rights it produces. The cheerleaders looked like guys and the girls with the football looked like

football players. But on this night, the fans in the stands were cheering on all aspects of the game as the hairy cheerleaders practiced for weeks to master choreographed halftime dance routines and the girls memorized playbooks from their perspective coaches. The game ended in a 20-all tie. Powder puff coaches who played in the varsity trenches during the football season did their best to turn the young women into skilled players in just one week. Head football coach Tom McHugh was the game referee and was impressed with the play of many of the girls.

Pets of the Week

Yzma is senior gal who needed some medical help but has brightened up considerable. She likes to explore our adoption showroom and is quite outgoing for her age. She would love to join you in your home and watch birds through the window.

Hai Hai is an energetic blur as he traverses our play yards. The person who found him reported he did well with other dogs and their young child. Would be careful with cats and small pocket pet animals. Schedule a meet and greet with this beautiful boy.
