TRANSCRIPT
In early 1989, a group of 15 people began meeting weekly in
an Upper East Side apartment. Their purpose was to pray
about planting a new church in the heart of Manhattan for
professional New Yorkers. One of their concerns was that
new believers were finding it difficult to locate a church they
could attend, a church that was open to people who were
seeking answers regarding their faith, and a church where
they felt secure in bringing their friends who were skeptical
about matters of faith.
They connected with a church planter named Timothy Keller,
who had moved to New York City with his wife and three
young sons. At the time, evangelical Christians made up less
than 1% of the population of central Manhattan; however, the
Kellers found an unexpected spiritual hunger among New
Yorkers, and contrary to all expectations, the church,
Redeemer Presbyterian, grew explosively from its very first
weeks.
Redeemer approximately doubled in size each year from 1989
to 1992. Today, eight Sunday services are held in three
different locations in central Manhattan, with over 5,000
attendees.
Redeemer began to plant churches in and around the New
York City metropolitan area in the late 1990s, as several
assistant pastors moved on to start new congregations in
Greenwich Village, Westchester, Harlem and Morningside
Heights.
In the spring of 1998, Redeemer concluded its first capital
campaign and used the funds to initiate the development of
the multi-site model and to found the Redeemer Church
Planting Center. In 2009, the Church Planting Center became
Redeemer City to City (CTC), a new entity organized to help
start gospel movements in cities around the world by
focusing on planting new churches and publishing resources
to equip leaders.
Since its founding, City to City has helped to plant almost 400
churches in 45 global cities, served 40 church planting
networks, and trained/served over 11,000 leaders. The
ministry model draws from Redeemer's experience as a
church in a secular, multicultural global city and it provides
resources, including funding, leadership training, and
coaching, for leaders in cities around the world.
Many of the historic revivals and advances of Christianity have
come from and through cities. Redeemer City to City believes
that God is providentially moving the people of the world to
cities, to reach and renew the world for His glory. Because
cities will again lead the world to Christ…
CTC’s vision is for a world-changing, city-renewing, gospel-
centered global church.
Redeemer City to City’s DNA, heritage, credibility, positioning,
and style are distinctly urban. Believing God is providentially
placing them in a position to help the global church meet the
opportunity of this historic migration...
CTC’s mission is to help leaders build gospel movements in
cities.
The Apostle Paul, arguably the greatest missionary in history,
had a simple, two-fold strategy as he set out to bring the gospel
to the Gentile world. First, he went to the cities (cf. Acts 16:9,
12), and second, he planted churches in each city (cf. Titus 1:5 -
"appoint elders in every town"). Having done that, he could say
that he had "fully preached" the gospel and that his work had
been accomplished (cf. Romans 15:19, 23). His assumption was
that once a church was established, everything necessary for
the spread of the gospel would follow.
Today, new churches are the best way to reach new
generations, new residents and new people groups in a city
with the gospel. In fact, new churches are more effective at
attracting people to the gospel than older, more established
churches. If the rapidly growing numbers of people in cities
who do not know Christ are to be reached, hundreds and
thousands of new churches need to be established in those
cities.
The mere proliferation of churches will not necessarily change a city
unless those churches are shaped inside-out by the gospel. The gospel
of Jesus Christ is the starting point for everything Redeemer City to
City does. It tells us that we are more sinful than we ever dared believe,
but at the same time more loved and accepted than we ever dared
hope. It takes away any basis for pride, self-righteousness, or despair,
and it affects not just the way we preach, but the way we view the
poor, the workplace, the broader culture, and those who believe
differently from ourselves. When the ministry of a church is driven by
the gospel it will work for the peace and prosperity of the city
(Jeremiah 29:7).
Nowhere do we encounter more opportunities to apply the gospel in
these ways than in the city. Many modern urban dwellers face
loneliness, economic hardship, social injustice, and personal and
societal brokenness. The church is to serve all of these needs, including
directly serving the poorest and most vulnerable populations in the
city. Redeemer City to City is dedicated to training leaders and
planting churches that are committed to strengthening the influence
of the gospel in the city in ways that result in spiritual growth, the
flourishing of neighborhoods, reconciliation between classes and
races, and the renewal of family life, education, health, and vocation.
Working for the common good also means bringing faith into the
various spheres of culture. The city is the center of business, the arts,
and the public and nonprofit sectors - fields with enormous influence
on the broader culture. Redeemer City to City is convinced that all
kinds of work, not just Christian ministry, can be used to glorify God
and make the city a better place.
God is moving people to cities. For
the first time, more than 50% of the
world is urban. By 2050, 75% of the
human race will work, worship, play,
raise families, and live in a city. Every
month, five million people move to a
city. Thus, the growth of cities is the
missional challenge of our generation.
Redeemer City to City is drawing on what has been learned in New York City and other
global cities over the past twenty years of collaboration with a growing number of
church planters and leaders around the world.
Redeemer City to City’s primary goal is to help start new churches that meet the
spiritual and physical needs of their cities. This involves working directly with local
leaders to start new churches, as well as with networks, denominations, and other
agencies involved in church planting and leadership development in each city.
CTC’s main role is to train and coach entrepreneurial pastors in the unique skills and
mindsets needed to start self-sustaining, biblically faithful churches that reach city
dwellers. Of these churches, 93% have been successful. They also train pastoral,
cultural, and marketplace leaders to bring the power of the gospel to every part of life
and ministry. The programs available are:
The International Intensive is a five-
week program held in New York City
to train church planters from global
cities.
The Incubator is CTC’s key two-year
program to serve, train, and develop
church planters in New York City and
selected strategic cities.
This program trains facilitators to
deliver and adapt CTC’s Incubator
curriculum for their city.
Gospel in the City is a two-day
learning experience that exposes
urban leaders to a vision about the
centrality of the gospel—a
theological and practical
understanding of how the gospel
shapes all of life, from the heart, to a
church and to a city.
The Fellows Program is designed for
individuals one to two years away
from planting a church in New York
City. It is a one-year course of study
intended to give participants a
realistic expectation of life and
ministry in the city context.
City Lab is a half-day training experience for New York City
church leadership teams.
CTC Learning gathers the best of our in-person training
programs into online and hybrid online/in-person courses.
CTC Partnership helps established churches use their
missions budget to sponsor new churches in global cities. We
partner with the church to involve their congregations in
supporting the new church and establishing a relationship
between the two churches.
CTC develops books, studies, and online campaigns that
address the questions of the city with the gospel in 25
languages. These resources reach tens of thousands of
leaders who seek to live faithfully and minister effectively in
the 21st century.
Redeemer City Ministry Program is a graduate-level
theological education in partnership with Reformed
Theological Seminary. Based entirely in NYC, candidates
pursue a Master of Arts (Biblical Studies) and prepare for
ministry in NYC and other cities.
The Apprentice Program is designed to help churches
identify, equip, and mobilize young leaders. Apprentices
receive nine months of training from CTC and coaching
from their pastor while completing a ministry assignment
in their local church. The Apprentice Program is the first
stage of the leadership development pipeline in NYC.
