Former Jawoyn chief executive Preston Lee, his sister, Member for Arnhem, Larisa Lee, as well as sev- eral employees of the Katherine- based association, had come under fire earlier this year, after former staff members raised allegations of misuse of Jawoyn money. But an investigation by an inde- pendent barrister on behalf of the In- digenous corporations watchdog - the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, an official Federal Gov- ernment organisation - has now found that there is not enough evidence to prove breaches of the legislation to take legal or civil action against one of the Territory’s largest Aboriginal associations. In February, Larisa Lee categori- cally denied any wrong doing and said allegations of covering up cor- ruption and misappropriating thou- sands of dollars that were meant to go towards emergency funds, were “wrong”. “The highly-defamatory allega- tions being made against me are based on groundless rumours and will be revealed as lies when the current official investigation into the associa- tion is completed,” Ms Lee said in February. “All my dealings with the Jawoyn Association have been lawful.” Artists to share skills at Barthulha Webs NO COVER CHARGE. What started out as a novel idea has quickly grown into a popular artistic retreat, which of- fers an enriching experience for both, established and non-estab- lished artists. Set on the banks of the Katherine River Barthulha Webs aims to give artists a platform to learn, share and experiment. Workshops include jewelry making, felting, etching, screen printing, native dying and paper making. Participants can also learn tra- ditional pandanus weaving tech- niques, make a bush toy with wool and hay, or learn how to felt flowers. From August 2 to 4 local Katherine and Top End artists will tutor at the event, including Indigenous weavers and string makers from Western Arnhem Land alongside Ngukurr-based bush-toy maker Dorcas Thomp- son.
