Dear Friends

Can you believe we are ready for spring, buds, new leaves, Arbor Day and all the things that happen in September? My sources tell me you have been very cold lately that’s because you don’t live in glorious Port Alfred! Our days are just beautiful and you can’t beat looking at the sea, and it’s changing moods, every day. The only downside is that the rain always falls out at sea and not on us!

Sitting on the Stoep I’ve been moonlighting this month! Maybe you have too?

A couple of Sundays ago the moon was bigger than it will be for many years to come but it was rainy (very light) and overcast so we couldn’t see it. I woke up at 4am on the Monday morning and got a glimpse through low scudding clouds that swept past with the occasional view of an ‘oh so bright moon’ every now and again.

‘Low scudding clouds’ – the words came instantly to my mind born of some long remembered buried recollection written by who (or whom – never sure?). As I stood on the Stoep seeking the moon in the dark early morning, why these words? One day I will remember.

And then on Tuesday we saw it rise over the edge of the sea. It was a huge orange ball dancing to our delight above the Fish River Lighthouse pushing through a couple of low cloudlets and leaping free in all its glory. An awesome sight. My wife had noticed the very low tide exposing sand banks in the river earlier in the morning. So, was the bigger (nearer) moon with increased gravitational pull

having a visible tidal effect? According to Newton’s Laws it should have a stronger pull on the tides as it gets nearer to us. Is this a visible effect? I like to think so. But in the meanwhile what a lovely moon thought!

When we were on the Barberton geological trail some of the very old rock formations showed visible tidal effects of over 3 billion years ago – according to the information presented the moon was closer to the earth then so the tides would have been fiercer then, both higher and lower over a piece of Africa then under water. What a great lady the moon can be when you look at her through new eyes in a small town with low streetlight levels so not polluting one’s sight of her majesty!

and, of course, a song came out from long ago which I can sing – ‘The Moon is Blue’. It was the name of a movie (bioscope in those days!) as well as its title song with a very young Maggie Smith (so like Audrey Hepburn then, or was Audrey like her?). It was a romantic love story which I’ve never seen again – seen only once but never forgotten. It’s unbelievable that we can still see Maggie now in lovely roles of old age, still with a twinkle in her eye, still a much loved personality.

At that time I bought the sheet music and learnt to play and sing the song which has brilliant crazy words:

“Money grows on trees, and deserts start to freeze

Cats converse in perfect Pekinese

Then one day a dream like you comes true

Now and again – when the moon is blue’

Did you know that a blue moon is used to describe two full moons in one calendar month (very rare) hence ‘now and again when the moon is blue’! The moon we saw wasn’t blue, it was orange, but in the magic of the movies as it rides its silvery splendour higher up who says it doesn’t have a tinge of blue? And it made me remember the lovely song from long ago.

Birds, Beasties, Trees, Updates and Important ThingsHere’s hoping that the Family Day celebrations will be the best ever. Don’t forget to put the date in your diary and be there. I know you will have a great time.

Nature’s True Colours Still the same high standard of colouring in – the children here are jolly talented. Congratulations Rose you have won the R100 prize this month.

Congratulations are also due to those of you who are sending in wonderful photos – quite a talented bunch we are (royal we, of course!)

Crackerjack “So perhaps could be, that ordinary me

Could fall in love with extra special you

They tell me that miracles come true

Now and again, when the moon is blue’

These words come from my memory bank so may be a bit travel worn but I still love the song and lady, even if I can’t remember who wrote the song and when – somewhere in the 50s. It’s a case of, as Bing, Ella and others, sang

“Oo oo who, what a little moonlight

can do to you!

So, enjoy the moon in its proximity and perhaps you should be like those who firmly believe that your flowers and vegetables will do so much better if you plant according to the phases of the moon. Try it!

I know we are very lucky!

General Manager's Report

Infrastructure Upgrades UpdateThe 750mm sewer line upgrade has been stalled due to the Steyn City appointed contactor being put into Business Rescue.

Steyn City have successfully cancelled the contract and have appointed a new contractor who should be on site within the next 2 weeks.

This together with Joburg Water awaiting consent from the Department of Water Affairs to by- pass the existing rising main will probably result in the delay of the contract of at least 3 months. Rehabilitation of the ground covering sewer line was supposed to commence mid September but will now in all probability only commence in the new year. The DHA is utilising all means at its disposal to secure Steyn City and Joburg Water’s participation in expediting the conclusion of this contract.

Steyn City are currently constructing a 30 mega litre water reservoir on the north eastern portion of the Estate which is also part of council’s and Johannesburg Water’s master planning and regional infrastructure upgrade for the region. This R35m reservoir, when complete, will supply 35% of Steyn City’s water needs and will also supply Dainfern, Dainfern Valley and Dainfern Ridge with the continuous water supply which will also solve water pressure problems frequently experienced by our residents during peak hours.

The R3m project to install a new irrigation system so that the golf course and estate are independently watered is

Within our residential estates, we are experiencing several difficulties with the water meters. Over the past 10 years we have come across properties that have absolutely NO water meter. You may ask yourselves, where on earth did these homeowners organise water from? Frankly, I do not know, other than to assume that they are illegally tapped into their neighbour’s water meter. This discovery really delays the transfer process. In fact, some homeowners are paying in excess of R4000 per month on water! This is outrageous! When queried with Council and requesting that they come and inspect the meters, we are getting no response. They do not even send someone around to check on the meter. However, if our homeowners are slightly late with payment or they have not paid the full amount, they arrive on a Friday afternoon to disconnect the water.

As agents, we try our level best to assist the tenants and homeowners but, ultimately it is going to be the homeowner’s persistence with Council to resolve these issues. I also think as a precaution going forward, agents should check that homeowners have in fact got water meters on their properties.

Estate News

Removal VehiclesResidents moving into or out of the Estate must bear in mind that there are height and length restrictions for removal trucks.

Nothing bigger than a 20’ container is allowed onto the Estate and the height restriction is 3.8 metres. Articulated

vehicles are not permitted as these vehicles are unable to negotiate the circles and roundabouts or the narrow roads in some of the villages.

Should a removal vehicle exceed the permissible length or height prescribed by the Estate the vehicle must park in the allotted secure area outside the Cedar Gate Entrance. The goods will then need to be shuttled in or out of the Estate using smaller vehicles.

Time Limits for ConstructionIn order to reduce inconvenience to neighbours and unsightliness, the time periods for alterations and additions to existing dwellings are as follows:

Up to 50m² - 3 months51 – 100m² - 4 months101 – 150m² - 6 months151m² plus - 9 months

In the event of construction exceeding the permissible time period, penalties levies will be imposed.

Rates Clearance Certificates and Refunds in the Transfer Process

Property MattersAll your property related questions answered

An area which can impact and unexpectedly delay the transfer process, is the issue of obtaining rates clearance figures from the relevant municipality.

The clearance figures obtained are normally four to six months in advance. The Seller is required to make full payment before the council will issue the certificate.

The delay in obtaining the figures and ultimately the certificate can be due to incorrect billings, lack of water meter reading records at council, separate accounts or that the previous owner’s account was not closed and the new account was not opened under the current owners’ names.

After registration the council will refund the seller the amount paid in advance. The responsibility to get the refund back it is ultimately the responsibility of the seller.

Why the certificate is required for transferIt certifies that the Seller does not owe any money to the Municipality. The Registrar of Deeds is ensuring that the Purchaser does not become responsible for any of the Seller’s outstanding debts due to council.

PaymentsThe clearance figures will include arrear amounts for rates, electricity, water, sewerage and refuse if applicable. To avoid delays the Seller must be prepared to settle a lump sum of which he will most likely be entitled to a refund from Council after registration.

How long does it normally take to obtain the certificateThe process can take up to three weeks but in certain circumstances it can take longer i.e when there are incorrect billings or metre problems.

Once the clearance certificate has been obtained, the Seller’s account at Council will be in a credit and the Seller can discontinue paying monthly rates as a result of the credit.

A refund from the city council and howThe Council takes approximately 6 to 9 weeks to reconcile the Seller’s and Purchaser’s accounts and pay the refund. The seller has to expressly request a refund from the municipality, complete a Refund Application form wherein the Seller’s banking or postal details are specified.

Council will thereafter provide the Seller with payment of the refund directly. If the seller requires their refund urgently, it is best to instruct a rates agent to act on their behalf.

Spring Up Your Home!A few tips to spruce up your homeAs the weather gets warmer, most homeowners are ready to wash away the winter blues and prepare for spring. The warming sunshine and refreshing rain causes the trees to start budding and flowers to bloom. But before you get caught up in landscaping and garden work, here are a few tips to spruce up your home and also get it into the vibrant mood of springtime.

Fresh Paint! The easiest way for a noticeable change in a room is to apply a new fresh coat of paint. Spring is a season of bright, vibrant colours as well as pastels. It is a great exercise to get inspiration from Mother Nature. Some people will stick with a neutral wall colour and introduce splashes of aqua blues and crisp greens. Even if you find a crazy colour that you love, try just painting one wall and see how it fits with your home. You may be surprised how a different colour on the walls can make your old furniture look new again.

In addition to the walls, spring is a great time to put a fresh coat of paint on your front door. Even if you do not wish to change the colour, a new coat of paint on the front door and frame will definitely brighten up the entry. Remember to clean your door first to rid it of the dust and grime that gathers throughout the seasons. It is also a good time to check the seals on your doors and windows. Since small cracks can allow heat in and out, replacing the weather stripping will reduce your energy bills all year long.

Lighter Fabrics & FurnitureAlthough that old, plush sofa is so comfortable, it doesn’t quite promote springtime. Try bringing in outdoor furniture to add a bit of bounce and texture to a boring room. Since it can a bit costly to buy new spring furniture, a simpler way to change up your couch is with a slipcover or re-upholstery. Bright and colourful patterned throw pillows are perfect for achieving a light and airy feeling. Additionally, they can be stored for future seasons when autum comes around. Swap out woolly, winter rugs for something lighter

or just simply remove them. Replace your bulky winter linens and window treatments with spring bedding and sheer curtains. Open up those blinds and curtains to let the sun shine inside. By eliminating the heavy materials from the room, you will find that your home automatically becomes lighter and brighter.

Change Up Your Wall and Table DecorBy the end of winter, most homeowners are tired of seeing the same old stuff on the walls and tables. Spring is the perfect time to switch up your decorations to create a newer, fresher feeling. Try separating your art into piles for the summer and winter seasons. To add more natural light to your home, hang mirrors that will reflect the sunshine streaming from the windows. Many people get creative with their spring decor. For example, an urn can be used inside as a utensil holder or fruit bowl to portray springtime on your kitchen counter. Inexpensive items like colourful lamps, vases and spring-scented candles can add vibrancy to any table. Swapping out accessories will help breathe new life into your home.

The best way to really freshen up a room is to display fresh flower arrangements. Daffodils, tulips and other early blooming bulbs add lots of life and colour to a dull room. Place a side table with a lovely bouquet of flowers next to the front door so it will be the first thing guests see when they enter. When creating a fresh arrangement of flowers, pick a colour scheme that will enhance the surrounding area. After all, nothing says spring more than fresh flowers.

Spring Cleaning, of course! In addition to the normal cleaning out of the garage, remember to get to those hardly thought about areas of your home. Give your floors a good cleaning by moving the furniture and vacuuming under those areas. Take the rugs and carpet runners outside for a good washing and vacuum the carpet where they were placed. Wash the curtains and other window treatments to get rid of dust. Clean out the refrigerator and cabinets to make space for fresh items and remove clutter. It is also a great time to clean and/or replace the stove-hood filter, dryer and other vents in your home.

So if you are ready to give up the winter sentiment, open up those windows and let the fresh, spring air sweep away the stale atmosphere. Relax on your favourite chair, feel the breeze from the sheer cur-tain blowing your way and plan your next task for inviting spring into your life!

Choosing a Colour

Paint Ideas

Sifting through decorating and design magazines is a favourite pastime of new homeowners or homeowners that want to renovate.

Each desires to outfit their new dream home with unique decor that is both elegant and inviting. There is flooring to install, furniture to pick out and arrange, and walls to be painted. However, before any of these tasks can be accomplished, a decision must be made: what is the colour scheme?

Each room in your home has a different purpose and will most likely have a different colour scheme. For example, a brilliant orange in the kids' playroom is not as appropriate in the spa-like master bath. In order to determine what colours should be applied to your living spaces, you must first have a basic knowledge of colour:

• Primary Colours: Those three colours learned at a young age are the foundation of the colour wheel – red, blue, and yellow.

• Secondary Colours: These are the colours that emerge once the Primary colours have been combined – purple, orange, and green.

• Tertiary Colours: The last spokes of the colour wheel are made when each of the Secondary's mixes with their neighbouring Primary.

• Cool Colours: Blues, greens, and purples make up the "cool" side of the colour wheel. These colours are passive and recede into the background, often making rooms appear larger. Cool colours are ideal for home offices, bedrooms, and other living spaces that require peace and calm. Greens are especially rejuvenating, so strategically placed houseplants can provide a splash of colour while maintaining a room's balance.

• Warm Colours: Reds, yellows, and oranges make up the other half of the colour wheel, invigorating living spaces. These are active colours that appear to move toward you and transform rooms into intimate settings. These colours can be distracting, so it is best to use them in creative spaces like playrooms and kitchens. Using them as accents for home offices can keep workspaces from being dreary while retaining productivity.

• Whites & Neutralisers: Although not considered part of the colour wheel, do not overlook the important place whites and neutrals have in your home decorating. Whites promote an open feeling when used in large quantities. Utilised as accents, whites provide crisp frames that showcase other colours. For the walls, turn to soft, muted whites to prevent eyestrain caused by light reflecting off brilliant whites. Neutralisers are those soft hues of tan and cream that bridge rooms together. Cooperative and not distracting, neutralisers blend with all other colours to keep schemes cohesive.

Now that you are familiar with the colour wheel, there are many ways to approach choosing a colour scheme. Consider the following methods, focusing on which option works in your home:

• Monochromatic: Single colour schemes are not as boring as one may imagine. Using various shades from the same colour family creates a harmonious colour scheme that is easy on the eye and simple to utilize.

• Analogous: To use analogous (similar) colours for a colour scheme, begin by selecting your favourite colour from the wheel. Then look at the neighbours on either

continue on page 24

Page 13: IN FOCUS - Dainfern · with a very young Maggie Smith (so like Audrey Hepburn then, or was Audrey like her?). It was a romantic love story which I’ve never seen again – seen only

- 24 - - 25 -

side. If you like only one of the neighbouring colours, look at what colour is on its other side. When you find three to five consecutive wheel colours that appeal to you, then you have determined your colour scheme. Analogous colours are richer than monochromatic schemes, but no more difficult to create.

• Complementary: Like choosing an analogous scheme, begin by selecting your favourite colour. Then look for the colour directly opposite on the colour wheel. These two colours are natural complements – one will be a warm colour (red, yellow, orange hue) and the other cool (blue, purple, green). The favourite colour should be dominant in your scheme while the complement serves as an accent. Though more difficult to balance, complementary colours create a very dynamic colour scheme.

• Split Complementary: Again, select your dominant (favourite) colour then determine the two colours adjacent to its complementary. Using these three

colours is slightly less rigid than the complementary scheme, but is just as vibrant. This scheme often works best when the warm colour is dominant.

• Triadic: For a triadic approach, select three colours that are spaced equally in the colour wheel. This scheme presents brilliant contrasting colours without being as dramatic as the complementary schemes. Often applied in home decor, one colour is used in larger amounts than the others.

While selecting one of the above to help determine a colour scheme, keep in mind the things being moved into your new dream home. You want to be certain the new colours will not clash with already owned furniture and linens. If you want the colour scheme to be something completely different from your old home, but new furniture is not in the budget, look for new slipcovers or consider re-upholstery.

Remember that perceptions of colour are linked to your emotions and experiences – any colour can match another, depending on the person selecting them. The most important part of the colour selection process is determining what you love. Search through those design magazines, seek professional advice, and in the end, go with your gut. Now that you know the basics on selecting colours, that dream decor can soon be yours.

Art as Investment

Beauty and the Bank Balance Investing in South African ArtThe best reason to buy a painting is because you love it. An appreciation of art is an emotional reaction. It appeals to our aesthetic sense, and may invoke a memory or trigger a wish. It may represent a dream of some ideal or give cause for pause and contemplation.

Another, equally good, reason to buy a painting is that it will represent an excellent investment. A well-considered purchase, based on sound research and good advice, may very well increase in value at a rate far beyond any other investment. It will have the added advantage of giving pleasure as it does so.A lovely charcoal sketch of a lady by Irma Stern, bought in 2005 for R35 000, is currently worth between R250 000 and R300 000. The sale of this investment attracts no transfer duty or capital gains tax, so what you get is pure profit. There are some local artists with a unique attraction. The work of Keith Alexander is close to the heart? of many South African art lovers. He lived in the nearby suburb of Hurlingham, and died at the tender age of 52. In the 25 years during which he painted, he produced a body of work of exceptional quality. The value of his canvasses never ceases to amaze, and one can rest assured that an investment in one of his beautiful, sometimes disconcerting pieces, will not disappoint. It is not only oil on canvas that tends to escalate in value. South Africa is home to many truly gifted sculptors, such

as Jean Doyle, famous for her wonderful depiction of “Just Nuisance” in Simon’s Town harbour. Sometimes a local sculptor, like Doyle, breaks into the European or American market, and this influences their prices profoundly. A sculpture by the internationally renowned Dylan Lewis, purchased in 2009 for R300 000, is one of a limited series, one of which was sold by Christies Auctioneers in London in 2013 for £46 000.For those art enthusiasts with a sense of adventure, and a more modest budget, it is possible to buy a lovely piece of work by a young artist at a reasonable price?. You will be giving them a boost, and may reap the rewards of a well-considered purchase. Luke Batha is the son of Gerhard Batha, who has long been recognised as one of the great South African painters of his generation. With those genes, and Luke’s wonderfully uninhibited style, you cannot go wrong. And having one of his quirky, or intense portraits on the wall is a guaranteed conversation-starter.A lovely work of art will yield years of pleasure. It is a rare instance where it is possible to enhance one’s life and increase one’s bank balance at the same time.

Tennis RacketsChoosing the correct tennis racket is so important. The correct racket can help your tennis and the wrong racket will certainly hamper your performance on a court. Our resident pro, Duane places a great deal of emphasis on using the correct racket.

The correct racket for two people of the same age, or strength or level might differ. Some of the aspects that you need to consider are brand, weight, balance, construction, grip size, head size, what type of game you play, do you have long or compact strokes and do you need a powerful or control racket. Then off course you need a racket in your price range and we all have our favorite brand, or the racket that our hero uses.

So needless to say there are many challenges in choosing the correct racket. Many players play with the wrong tennis racket and don’t even know it. For youngsters it is crucial to start with the correct size racket and grip size and to progress to the next size up when needed. Often

parents skip sizes and it is not advisable. Choosing the correct racket does not have to be expensive either. As we say, “a workman needs the right tool for the job”.

The more experienced a player gets and advanced tournament players start specializing with their equipment. To take it a step further, the second most important choice you will make is choosing the correct string that suites your game and feel.

Some players are more hung up over strings than rackets and once they have the string that truly works for them they stick to it. Strings can ad more qualities to your racket, such as power, more control, great feel, more durable, softer or harder feel.

Even though it feels like the year is almost over, its not too late to start running. In fact, it is very early in the road running season and it’s a great time to set some running goals. There are some great local events coming up and the weekly time trial is a great way to improve your fitness.

The Running Club meets at 5:30pm on a Wednesday evening just below the practice green and the time trial starts at 5:45pm sharp. We are still taking new members and there is a pro rata membership fee available because it is so late in the year.

Acmadenia heterophylla

Flower of the Month

Family: Rutaceae / Common names: Buchu, BoegoeRef: South African National Biodiversity Institute, South Africa.

This is a delicate looking shrub with starry pink flowers and a sweet lemony scent when touched. It belongs to the citrus family (Rutaceae) with most of the members commonly called buchu because of their aromatic leaves.

Best known is the real buchu, Agathosma betulina, which is widely used in medicine. But this little shrub, Acmadenia heterophylla, also deserves a closer look from visitors and gardeners.

Small and compact it grows to about 400 mm high, looking neat and green throughout the year. The dark green leaves are tiny with small hairs all along their edge and oil glands that emits the scent. Hardly ever without a flower, the bushes are covered with deep pink flowers at the tips of the stems during autumn, winter and spring. Each of the flower's five petals has a prominent dark pink nectar guide leading to the centre of the flower. Visiting bees are usually the pollinators, but butterflies also visit the plants.

Acmadenia heterophylla naturally occur on the hills and limestone outcrops around Bredasdorp, Caledon and Mosselbay in the southern Cape.

Growing Acmadenia heterophyllaAcdamenia heterophylla Acmadenia heterophylla easily adapts to growing in the garden where it requires full sun and well-drained soil. It will benefit from well prepared soil with compost and a thick layer of mulch. The plants also respond well to slow release fertilizer like 3:1:5. Although natural to limestone, Acmadenia heterophylla will also tolerate acidic soils. These are excellent plants for coastal gardens.

The plants can be propagated by seed or cuttings, but both require some skill. Fresh seed must be sown in autumn.

Cuttings have the advantage of producing a larger flowering plant faster than seedlings. Semi-hardwood cuttings, 50 to 70mm, are taken from the current year's growth (August to early October). Prepare cuttings by making a clean cut below the node and remove the third of the foliage. Dip the base of the cuttings in a rooting hormone such as Seradix 3. Firmly place cuttings in a medium of 50% bark and 50% polystyrene. Ideally these cuttings should now be placed in an well-aerated propagation unit with a bottom heat of 24-degree Celsius. Rooting occurs in 9 to 11 weeks. Carefully pot the rooted cuttings using a well-drained humus rich fynbos potting medium (2 parts leafmould, 1 part coarse sand). Plants will be ready for planting in 7 to 8 months. Feed regularly with a well balance nutrient. Yellow leaves can be treated with an application of iron chelate.

There are 33 species in the genus Acmadenia and they are mainly found in the southern and south western Cape. In this family, Rutaceae, of which the leaves of the plants are dotted with aromatic oil glands that produce fragrances unique to each species, there are also other interesting genera like Agathosma, Adenandra and Coleonema. Unfortunately these plants are not easy to obtain, but are sure to become more popular as they prove to be such excellent garden plants.

Combretum kraussiiHochst. Family: Combretaceae / Common names: Forest Bushwillow

Tree of the Month

Handsome, quick growing and reasonably cold resistant, this tree is recommended for shady areas in gardens with a mild to warm climate.

DescriptionFlowers and white new leaves. This is a medium to large tree, that has been classified as mostly evergreen (Carr 1988) or deciduous or semi-deciduous (Van Wyk & Van Wyk 1997) tree. This beautifully decorative tree's leaves turn bright red to purple in winter, dropping just before flowering, which starts around August and continues through to November.

The flowers are creamy-white and carried in dense heads. Some trees also have a showy flush of small white leaves in spring which either turn green (Palmer & Pitman 1972)

or are replaced by the bright green leaves (Coates Pal-grave 2002). Four-winged fruit carried in clusters from about February to June follow the flowers. The fruit are small, light to dark red and turn a conspicuous brownish red when dry.

DistributionFound from the coast to the midlands in the eastern regions of South Africa and neighbouring Swaziland. The habitat ranges from rocky hillsides at altitudes from almost sea level up to 1 200 m. It grows anywhere from evergreen forest or forest margins to dense woodland.

Derivation of name and historical aspectsThe specific name of this tree honours Dr F. Krauss of the Stuttgart Museum who made a collecting trip to South Africa in 1837-1840.

EcologyCombretums are pollinated by various kinds of insects, including bees. They have adapted to wind dispersal by developing a wing-like fruit structure that can carry the seed with the help of air currents or wind. Some animals are known to eat Combretum fruit and also help with the seed dispersal.

continued from page 48

Tree of the Month

Uses and cultural aspectsThe young stems are pliable and used in basket-making. The wood is tough and yellowish in colour; the sawdust can however cause a skin irritation. Certain parts from the tree are used to produce antidiuretics, lotions for eye infections, as well as antiseptics.

Growing Combretum kraussiiCombretum kraussii grows easily and quickly from seed. Fruit can be harvested, since it is produced in fair quantities and is usually not unduly parasitized. If fruit is collected for cultivation purposes it should be checked for parasites. Indications of parasites being present are small circular holes in the body or a gummy excrescence. Fruit should be stored in a dry place. It is a good idea to take the seed out of the fruit covering and soak it for an hour or so before sowing. Sow the seeds at a depth of 3-5 mm below the surface in a well-drained medium. The first seedling appears 9 to17 days after sowing. All seeds should have germinated after 15 to 29 days.

Protect seedlings from too much moisture - check that the soil drains well. Shelter seedlings from severe heat and cold for at least the first year. This is a fast-growing tree and can reach 1.7 m after two summers.

This tree is reasonably drought resistant. Water seedlings every 3-4 days in summer and every 7-10 days in winter.

DNA Projects

Dainfern Nature Association Barn Owl Release ProjectBy Olivia Denny

Two young Barn Owls (Tyto alba) were placed in a release cage in Dainfern. The owls were fed every evening at the same time through a hole in the door of the pen, so that they would be accustomed to a feeding programme and their new location.

The feeding programme went very well for 7 weeks and the birds were very responsive. Towards the end, nearing their release, they started flying around the pen a lot, before being fed. The one owl was a more sociable fellow, but the other smaller one was a lot more shy and only ventured out after a while.

The day before their release the owls were not fed. The next night I went down to open the cage door with André Marx, our bird expert. We sat quietly at the site, watching the door of the pen very closely for about 20 minutes when the one owl sat at the door, moved to the grass and then flew onto the top of the release pen. After a while the second owl followed and did the same thing, and then they both disappeared over into Steyn City. Our hearts sank as I had become quite attached by now, and although we were hoping they would stay on our side of the fence they were free and the grassland on the other side of the fence probably looked more inviting.

The next evening it rained so I could not go down to feed them, so I had to wait another night. I placed their food on top of the cage, blew my whistle which they were now accustomed to when they were being fed, and sat on the wall and waited. Within seconds one owl arrived, flew onto the roof, then onto the ground, up onto the Steyn City wall and back again where he perched for a long while. I shone the spot light just below him and chatted to him as

I always did when I went down to feed them. He seemed content and happy knowing that there was food in sight. The owls will continue to be fed over the next week or so, until they lose interest in their food.

A pair of Barn Owls can consume up to 2000 rats in a year – the best and most earth-friendly rodenticide available. Owls are often feared, hated and even killed by superstitious people. Many people believe that because owls are awake and flying at night that they are evil and also have supernatural powers. Owls are just beautiful birds that have adapted really well to being nocturnal because there is not much competition from other birds at night and also because their food (rats) is also active at night.

Owl numbers are decreasing and therefore the rodent population is increasing. As a result more and more people are turning to rat poison to control the rats. The owls catch the dying rats and are poisoned as well, leaving them to die an agonising death as they bleed internally.

The Fourways Nature Conservators are appealing to all residents to stop using rat poison as this will jeopardise the program. Rat poison doesn’t just target rats. It will poison any creature, even humans. Please remember that there is no such thing as an owl friendly rat poison. Remove bird seed and dog faeces, garbage and compost and the rats will leave.

Western Barn Owl Tyto alba

By André Marx

Bird of the Month

The Barn Owl is the most widely distributed species of owl in the world, having been introduced to many countries where it did not formerly occur, and having spread naturally because of the bird’s affinity to man-made structures.

Recently a taxonomic revision resulted in ‘our’ owl, which occurs in the western hemisphere, being classified as a different species and the common name was changed to Western Barn Owl to distinguish it from other Barn Owl forms in other parts of the world.

This species is essentially nocturnal and is known for its silent flight and pale colouration. Barn Owls hunt most of their food by sound which they detect with their keen sense of hearing. They hunt mostly small mammals, especially mice and rats, and are therefore an extremely useful species to have in any urban environment. The reality is that Barn Owls have declined in areas like Dainfern as the use of pesticides to control rats and mice has poisoned birds over time. From being a fairly common species in

the estate they are now only occasionally observed. Being nocturnal they are more often heard than seen and the key characteristic to listen for is their eerie shreee scream. This owl does not hoot, contrary to popular belief, the hooting sound you may hear on still nights belongs to the Spotted Eagle Owl which also occurs on the estate. If you hear that shrieking sound you will know this owl is in the vicinity and you should be pleased as the bird can pose no harm to any person.

The owl release project mentioned in this month’s newsletter is a superb initiative that will hopefully help bolster the population of these enigmatic birds in our region so that we can once again see these majestic owls silently floating around the estate at night. It is worthwhile noting that during the monitoring project Marsh Owls were also seen in the early evening in Dainfern, and together with the Spotted Eagle Owl which we know is present, we now have three species of owl on the estate. We must ensure our environment is kept as pristine as possible and is free of harmful pesticides so that these birds can prosper and be present for years to come.
