This year calls for celebration. Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre has come a long way in the 30 years since its inception in 1986 – surely a cause for celebration by the entire school: board members, present and past teachers, past and present students as well as their parents over the three decades.

Looking back at past pupils, it is simply amazing to see how many of them have become professional musicians. Even those who did not make music a career are still actively involved by either attending concerts regularly or playing for fun and teaching their children the enjoyment of music. In the course of our celebrations, we hope to showcase some of our talented past students to inspire and encourage the current generation.

Our anniversary will take place over the weekend of 29 April to 1 May. Please keep the weekend open to attend the concerts that are now being finalised and rehearsed.

In brief, the programme includes: an Orchestra Concert on Friday, 29 April, with all the Centre orchestras performing.a Leon Hartshorne Memorial Concert on Saturday, 30 April, where the Symphony Orchestra will perform with the celebrated South African pianist Jan Hugo (currently based in Germany) as soloist, as well the Senior Wind Band and a harp ensemble consisting of past and present pupils.On the Sunday afternoon, past students and teachers will perform with past teachers Louis van der Watt with Johan Pretorius conducting.

But these concerts are only part of the fun.

This Libretto, as is customary, also covers all the performances of pupils and orchestras. We look forward to many more exceptional achievements and performances in the course of the year and especially also a tour of Bratislava, Prague, Budapest and Vienna by the HLSO at the end of this year. More about that later.

The Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Liam Burden, was well prepared and ensured an enjoyable performance.

The audience showed their appreciation with prolonged applause at the end of yet another remarkable Concerto Festival.

Die Gala-aand van die Pieter Kooij Musiekkompetisie het vanjaar op 29 Augustus 2015 plaasgevind.

Uit 25 deelnemers is agt kandidate gekies om hierdie aand te speel. Twee van Hugo Lambrechts se studente, naamlik Lisa Britz (harp) en Nastassja Pretorius (tjello), was as finaliste gekies. Ons is baie trots op Lisa, wat met die tweede prys weggestap het! Annerike du Plessis (klavier) is as die algehele wenner aangewys.

Eleven of Cape Town’s top young instrumentalists, together with two top cellists from Gauteng and Mangaung, were showcased at this year’s Concerto Festival which took place on 30 August 2015.

The programme featured a variety of instruments, with repertoire ranging from works by Mozart, Schumann and Mendelssohn to the world première of the Concerto for Marimba by South African composer Hendrik Hofmeyr. The young soloists took to the stage with confidence and gave spectacular performances. The audience was treated to an extraordinarily high standard of playing and the soloists demonstrated their virtuosity and maturity with great ease.

The Johann Vos Piano Competition, an exciting competition in the Cape Town calendar, took place from 21 August to 2 September.

Many piano lovers come to watch the up and coming talent, and last year was no exception: the attendance was excellent.

The Piccolo section was won by pianist Natanya Uys, with Vitske van Zyl, also on piano, receiving second prize. Simon Wu won the Junior section and Victoria Fokkens was placed second. The Senior section was won by Annerike du Plessis, with Winand Mey placed as runner up.

The Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra participated in new ventures this year, namely music festivals and an educational concert.

After the Greyton/Genadendal festival in May, the orchestra was invited to perform in the Dutch Reformed Church in Tulbagh on 12 September as part of the Tulbagh Arts Festival. The orchestra was warmly welcomed in Tulbagh and the team spirit was evident again on the bus before and after the concert. We are proud that our highly accomplished harp student, Lisa Britz, also featured in the programme as a soloist with the orchestra.

The ‘Introduction to the Orchestral Instruments’ programme was performed on 7 December, featuring each instrument that is included in a symphony orchestra. Conductor Liam Burden interacted with the young audience in a question-answer manner, awarding those who answered correctly with a Hugo Lambrechts branded pencil. The children learned a lot about the instruments and heard beautiful classical music.

Op 16 September het Hoërskool Tygerberg sy eerste musiekkompetisie, Mini Maestros, vir laerskoolleerders aangebied.

Mini Maestros gaan ‘n jaarlikse instelling word en die doelwit van hierdie kompetisie is om aan die gemeenskap te toon dat musiek ‘n baie belangrike komponent van Hoërskool Tygerberg is. Die wenners van die inhuldigingkonsert was:

Eersteplek: Natanja Uys (vioolleerder van Elzaan Coetzee).

Tweedeplek: Liam Slabbert (fagotleerder van Carin Bam, Hugo Lambrechts).

Derdeplek: Kylie de Wet (klarinetleerder van Liam Burden, Hugo Lambrechts).

The third term proved to be full of big concerts. Soon after the Concerto Festival, the String Department had to gear up for another big annual event – the Orchestra Festival – which took place on 20 September.

The Centre’s string orchestras were joined again by the Cape Town Philhar-monic Youth Orchestra, West Coast Youth Orchestra, Rustenburg Girls Junior School String Ensemble, Stellenbosch Strykers and Frank Pietersen Junior String Orchestra. There was an unusual addition to the programme, namely the West Coast Youth Percussion Orchestra (Boomwackers), which delivered an unconventional performance of Karl Jenkins’ Paladio.

The programme also included a Hugo Lambrechts Mass String Orchestra performing The Circus Comes to Town by Jill Townsend, featuring new sound effects from the string instruments, traditional Russian and American tunes arranged by Louis van der Watt, and traditional English tunes arranged by N Hare. The audience also heard Chinese Dance from ‘The Nutcracker‘ by P Tchaikiovsky, Finale from William Tell Overture by G Rossini, Theme from Mission Impossible, the beautiful Pavane by G Fauré and the passionate Libertango by A Piazzolla. The latter was performed by the Hugo Lambrechts Senior and Intermediate String Orchestras.

The concert ended with the triumphal finale from Symphony No. 9 in E-minor, New World Symphony by A Dvořák, brilliantly performed by the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra under the batton of the talented Brandon Phillips. The orchestra was joined by a few Hugo Lambrechts students and string teachers.

It was a concert to remember, full of good performances, festivity and enthusiasm, where young musicians and their conductors and accompa-nists from different parts of the Western Cape could share their talent and love for music. Once again the concert was sold out beforehand and chairs had to be added in the auditorium. To avoid disappointment, please diarise 18 September for the 2016 Orchestra Festival.

The Italy Percussion Competition and Festival, which took place in September 2015, was one of the most amazing experiences imaginable!

On our arrival in Pescara, Italy, we were immediately swept up in the hustle and bustle of the festival. Each day was packed with events, which included various competition rounds in all percussion instrumental categories such as Marimba, Vibraphone, Snare Drum, Timpani and Drumset. Alongside the competition were masterclasses and evening concerts presented by world-class jury members.

The knowledge one gains from being in the company of percussionists from all over the world is priceless! It was very interesting to be exposed to various styles of performance and interpretation by the candidates as well as the jury.

A highlight of the festival was the performance and masterclass of Theodore Milkov. The performance was an impressive display of his virtuosity and musicianship. He plays passages that are normally played with four mallets, with only one or two mallets. He displayed this virtuosity by playing Mozart’s Sonata in C for piano. He demonstrated this seldom seen art during his masterclass. What he makes seem easy, takes a lifetime to master.

The final round of the junior category (14 – 17 years) was yet another highlight. It was really an eye-opener to witness the exceptionally high standard. As I was competing in this category, I was very grateful to make it through to the semi-final round. In all, it was very inspiring!

The event was simply fantastic and I am extremely grateful that I was granted the opportunity to embark on such a journey!

In total, 62 students from across the country were selected to participate in the SAMRO Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition, which ran from 28 September to 2 October.

The inaugural National Youth Music Competition, founded by Michael Maas, took place at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre from 13 to 17 October 2015.

From the 19 participants selected to participate in the competition, 12 advanced to the semi-final round. From these, six were chosen to partici-pate in the finals, namely Emilio February (marimba, Hugo Lambrechts learner), Sakhile Humbane (flute), Henley Jun (piano), Stephen Maycock (clarinet), Rhiyaan Smith (piano) and Amy Stessl (flute). These finalists had the opportunity to play with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.

The category winners were: • Emilio February (other instruments), • Henley Jun (piano), and • Sakhile Humbane (wind instruments).

Runner-up prizes went to: • Nicholas Bruiners (string instruments), • Amy Stessl and Stephen Maycock (wind instruments) and • Rhiyaan Smith (piano).

The UNISA Shadow Jury Prize went to Férrol-Jon Davids (clarinet).

Other prizes:• Best classical work: Rhiyaan Smith (piano), • Best concerto: Sakhile Humbane (flute), • Best South African work: Emilio February and • Leon Hartshorne prize: Stephen Maycock (clarinet).

The Michael Masote prizes for the most promising candidate in each instrumental category went to:• Ashlin Grobbelaar (cello), • Teboho Jabu Sesing (cello), • Férrol-Jon Davids (clarinet) and • Shannon Thebus (French horn).

The overall winner was Sakhile Humbane (flute).

During the competition, Emilio February premiered the first and second movements of Hendrik Hofmeyr’s Concerto per Marimba e Orchestra D’Archi. Ms Ehlers commissioned SAMRO to write this work in 2014 specifi-cally for Emilio. The combination of Hendrik Hofmeyr and Emilio February could not have been better. The colour tones of Hofmeyr’s composition and the warmth of the marimba sounds enhanced the depth of both the performer and the composition. Emilio’s virtuosity on the marimba and Hofmeyr’s composition proved to be a winning recipe!

Volwasse KonsertDie jaarlikse Volwasse Konsert het 27 Oktober by Hugo Lambrechts in lokaal A14 plaasgevind.

Ten spyte van die vreeslike hitte, was dit ‘n baie genotvolle aand gewees. Die onderwysers het besluit om vir elke deelnemer ‘n sertifikaat te gee. Daar was ook ‘n sertifikaat vir die wat eksterne eksamens vanjaar gespeel het.

Van die volwassenes het vir die eerste keer opgetree voor ‘n gehoor en die stresvlakke was maar taamlik hoog, maar tog het almal hulle goed van hul taak gekwyt. Lynette Pienaar (viool) het die gehoor in vervoering gehad met haar Meditation van Thais deur Massenet en een van ons oudste studente, Stephan Lategan, sou ‘n baba aan die slaap kon wieg met sy interpretasie van Brahms se Wiegenlied.

Die konsert was afgesluit met koel sjerrie en vrugtesap.

National Youth Music Competition

String Beginner ConcertThe String Beginner Concert took place on 12 November 2015 with the enchant-ing theme ‘Classic Children Tales’.

The students’ outfits were wonderful, with characters from Little Red Riding Hood, Peter Rabbit, Robin Hood, Pinocchio and many more. Behind stage, the excitement of the learners was palpable.

The teachers opened the concert with Evening Prayer from Hansel and Gretel as the students walked on stage. Groups and individuals performed two or more pieces, and their efforts received loud applause. The Beginner String Orchestra, seated on stage, inspired the young students in terms of where they could go next.

Everyone joined in for a mass item to conclude the evening. The work performed was Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The stage was adorned with a castle backdrop and carriage, complete with a red carpet for the event!

Once the proceedings had finished, the students received presents as they left the stage. They could pose for photographs at the Red Riding Hood themed photo booth and enjoy treats at a party laid out in the foyer.

Congratulations to all the students and teachers for a fun-filled and successful concert!

Prestigekonsert 2015Voor jy jou oë uitvee, is dit al weer die einde van nog ’n jaar en dit was tyd om die leerlinge wat presteer het, te vereer by die jaarlikse Prestigekonsert.

Hierdie geleentheid het 6 November plaasgevind. Die ouditorium was stampvol en almal moes minimaal asemhaal en beweeg om te verhoed dat hul nie te warm kry nie. Die pryswenners het geblink van kop tot tone en almal was opgewonde en nuuskierig om te sien wie wat gaan kry.

Die aand het begin met ’n konsert aangebied deur ons top-presteerders, naamlik Lisa Britz (harp), Danielle Salies (viool), Nastassja Pretorius (tjello), Liam Slabbert (fagot), Danielle Rossouw (klarinet) Emilio February (marimba), die Hugo Lambrechts-saxofoon-kwartet en Tarren Pedro (fagot) en Qden Blaauw (klavier). Hulle het omtrent geskitter en dit was duidelik hoorbaar waarom hulle hul pryse oor en oor verdien.

Na die inspirerende toespraak van Mnr Keith Tabisher, Adjunk-hoof Onderwysspesialis (musiek), het hy gehelp met die oorhandiging van die trofees. Vir die eerste keer is ‘n nuwe toekenning oorhandig wat ‘n prys is vir die student wie die meeste musiek konserte bygewoon het. Die prys behels 50% afslag op ‘n kwartaal se Sentrumfooie. Ons hoop dit sal help om ons studente te motiveer om meer konserte by te woon.

Hartlike geluk aan al die pryswenners! Na ’n hele jaar se harde werk en ekstra ure, besef mens dit is tog die moeite werd.

The percussion concert took place on 4 December in the Auditorium at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre.

The majority of the concert consisted of juniors who flaunted their talents on various percussion instruments. The size of these instruments did not perturb their little personalities as they showed the audience what they were capable of playing.

The Hugo Lambrechts Percussion Quartet, consisting of Lizette Opperman, Emilio February, Jesse Box and Amy-Joy Bailey, threw all of their toys out the cot with the work Percussion Music by M. Colgrass.

Emilio February featured as one of the soloists in this concert and enchanted the audience with Prayer by R. Gipson and Orient Express by N. Rohwer. He was also part of a trio, together with Cherilee Adams and Dylan Tabisher, who performed J.S. Bach’s beautiful Air on a G-string.

The concert ended with a boost of energy with the well-known work, Ultimatum II, by Zivković. This was performed by the US Percussion Duo, namely Cherilee Adams and Dylan Tabisher.

The evening journeyed the audience through various stages of percussion performance development and left the parents and students on a high!

Well done to everyone who performed and thank you to all the percussion students for their hard work!

Houtblaas Beginnerskonsert

In 2015 het 58 leerders van die Sentrum se strykers-, houtblaas-, slagwerk, harp en klavier departemente ingeskryf vir die tweede sessie van die UNISA Praktiese Musiekeksamens.

‘n Totaal van 28 van die kandidate het Loftoekennings ontvang en drie is op die Ererol geplaas, naamlik:• Josh Southgate - fluit (graad 4): 90% • James Cilliers - saxofoon (graad 1): 91% • Remi Ludick - altviool (graad 4): 90%

Van die inskrywings was 17 van leerders uit ons ontwikkelingsgroepe en vyf van hierdie kandidate het Loftoekennings ontvang.

Baie geluk aan die leerders en hul onderwysers met hierdie uitsonderlike prestasies!

Die vrolike Houtblaas-beginnersgroep is uitgevat vir die okkasie

Op 25 November het die Houtblaas Beginnerskonsert in die Ouditorium plaasgevind. Die tema van die konsert was Fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.

Al die studente was uitgevat in kostuums volgens die tema. Agter die verhoog was daar ‘n senuweagtige maar baie opgewonde gevoel, aangesien dit vir van die leerders hul eerste geleentheid was om in ’n konsert te speel.

Die Massablaasorkes het How the Grinch stole Christmas deur A Hague gespeel, waarna alle leerders van die Houtblaasdepartement wat hierdie jaar begin het hul solo items gelewer het. Dit was gevolg deur die Massablaasorkes wat die program beëindig het met Christmas “a la” Big Band deur L Clark.

Me Ehlers het pryse oorhandig aan James Cillers (beste kleredrag volgens die tema), Leah Demore (beste verhoogpersoonlikheid) en Timothy Zaal (wat op sewe jarige ouderdom die jongste solis by die konsert was). Alle fondse van die konsert was aan Die Burger se Kersfonds geskenk.

The Hugo Lambrechts Christmas Concert, which took on an entirely new guise in many ways, was a perfect way to end the year.

Last year, the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra (HLSO) performed on a separate day to the other orchestras and wind bands at the Centre. This time, all the orchestras performed on the same evening. In addition, the New Apostolic Children’s Choir joined the HLSO in the second half of the evening. This was the result of a new friendship with the New Apostolic Children’s Choir – stemming from a successful collaboration between the Centre and Die Suidoosterfees.

The concert was opened by the Hugo Lambrechts Harp Ensemble. This was a very special feature in our concert, as there are not many institutions, if any, that can boast about having 10 harps on stage at the same time!

Following the harps came the massed string orchestra – a combination of orchestras from the String department, conducted by Zelda Hofstander. The mass wind band – also a combination of the Centre’s various wind bands – took to the stage next under the baton of Charlene Saayman.

Under the direction of Liam Burden, the HLSO concluded the first half of the programme. Led by Marisa Marcio and students of the singing department, the audience joined in by singing two well-loved Christmas carols, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and O Come All Ye Faithful.

The second half of the evening involved the HLSO with various soloists. Niel Rademan, CEO of Die Suidoosterfees, gave a rousing rendition of the popular Cantique de Noel (O Holy Night) and Efeoluwa Alaba and Sinead Symons, singing students of Marisa Marchio, sang the beautifully calming Evening Song from Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.

Believe, from the popular children’s Christmas movie The Polar Express, and All is well were performed by the New Apostolic Children’s Choir accompanied by the HLSO. It was such a privilege for the HLSO to perform with such an immensely talented and well trained choir. Congratulations to you all and thank you for joining us in this performance.

The evening ended with the Hugo Lambrechts Mass Orchestra, which consisted of ALL the students from the various orchestras on the stage at the same time! This was a first in recent years!

A portion of the evening’s proceeds, as well as gift packs, were donated to the Tygerbeertjie Fund.

Congratulations to all the students who entered and passed their respective Trinity College of London practical exams.

The Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra (HLSO) played its penultimate performance for 2015 at the V&A Waterfront amphitheatre on 4 December, while its final performance for 2015 was a demonstration for school learners in the Centre’s auditorium on 7 December.

The programme, which consisted of various works prepared throughout the year, was very well received by the audience in the packed-out amphitheatre. The audience also whole-hearted joined in to sing two well-known Christmas carols, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and O Come all Ye Faithful. A definite ‘hit’ with the audience was Joseph Haydn’s Toy Symphony. This light-hearted composition is interjected with solos by ‘toy’ instruments. A special mention must be made of our director, Ms Ehlers, whose enthusiastic rendition of the drum part was most enjoyable!

Mr Burden thanks all the students and staff who spent many hours rehearsing and preparing throughout the year for the performances during 2015. Your hard work and dedication resulted in many more performances taking place last year than in the past. These included the invitation to perform at the Tulbagh Music Festival and the Greyton/Genadendal Classics For All Festival. In the latter event, the Centre not only performed in a concert of its own, but in the gala evening as well.
