Gift of Life Donor Program wishes to thank all of the state-run DMVs, our region’s transplant centers, and our volunteers and supporters for helping us to reach this important goal of 100 million. But with more than 6,500 men, women and children awaiting a lifesaving organ transplant our work is not done.

While we celebrate the accomplishment of registering 100 million people nationwide, work has already begun to reach the new national goal of registering 20 million new donors by the end of 2012. This past September was Jessie’s Day’s 9th year, and was a great afternoon of food, music and art – with a silent auction that featured crafts and gift baskets. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefited the Jessica Beth Schwartz Memorial Scholarship Fund. Operated in conjunction with the Transplant Foundation, the Fund awards scholarships annually to students who’ve had organ transplants. For more information about how to get involved, or to donate, contact Lori Ray at [email protected] or call 1-800-DONORS-1, ext. 1152.

A legacy that lives on to Help others On September 24, 2011 friends and family of former journalism student and heart recipient Jessica Beth Schwartz gathered to remember her life, and support a scholarship fund in her name. In 2003, Schwartz lost her battle with heart disease, but left behind a legacy for all college-bound organ recipients when her family created “Jessie’s Day” as a fundraiser: The annual event, held this year at McFadden’s at the Ballpark in Citizens Bank Park raised more than $10,000 for the Jessica Beth Schwartz Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Gift of Life Donor Program held its annual series of Donor Recognition Ceremonies this fall for family members of those who have been organ or tissue donors during the previous year. The 5 ceremonies this year occurred from October 30 through November 20, and took place in Berlin, New Jersey; Harrisburg, King of Prussia and Macungie, Pennsylvania; and Wilmington, Delaware. The events were an emotional experience that we hope helped to provide some consolation to our donor families, while highlighting the significance of their loved ones’ gifts.

Donor families gathered to honor their loved ones at the ceremonies, and took the opportunity to meet other families like them. They were warmly greeted with a welcome from Gift of Life Donor Program, before a presentation from donor family members and transplant recipients. The speakers all did a wonderful job to honor the donors’ loving gifts and to acknowledge the family members for their strength. Every donor family received a Gift of Life Donor Medal. The picture on the medals symbolically illustrate the donation process as the hand of the donor passes on the gift of life, represented by a heart, to the recipient’s hand. This is an incredible act of compassion and love, represented on the medal by a rose. The magnitude of the gift is accentuated by rays extending from the heart. Gift of Life played a photo tribute for all

Remembering Our donors, Friends and Familiesto watch following the presentation of the medals, and donors were highlighted again during this very moving homage. A reception with light snacks and beverages ensued at which families had the opportunity to speak with other donor family members and Gift of Life Donor Program staff who are present.

Remembering Our donors, Friends and FamiliesThroughout the ceremony, donor families had the chance to pin quilt squares representing their loved one on a piece of muslin to be a part of a new donor quilt in the Threads of Love Memorial Quilts project. These quilts are displayed at community outreach events at schools, houses of worships or hospitals as part of our educational programs. New this year was a Wrapped in Hugs project in which donor families received crocheted and hand knit wraps handmade by volunteers as a symbol of thanks and warmth for their loved ones’ gifts.

The ceremonies offer a time for remembrance and honor. We hope that families can appreciate the impact their loved one had on another with their gift, and we hope the ceremony instilled a lot of pride in the families. As an organization, Gift of Life Donor Program is very grateful to all the families and respects all they have been through. We thank you for your wonderful gift, and are grateful to have the support of such generous volunteers.

On January 2, 2012, giant floral clocks will rise above riders aboard Donate Life America’s ninth Rose Parade float. The clocks will bring special meaning to “…One More Day,” and embody the precious gift of time that donation brings, spotlighting Donate Life America’s campaign to inspire people to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors.

Gift of Life Donor Program is proud to again sponsor the Donate Life Rose Parade Float and to be highlighting the stories of several local residents who will be traveling to Pasadena, and encouraging parade viewers to save lives by registering in their states to be organ, eye and tissue donors.

Twenty-eight featured float riders, who range in age from 17 to 67, will represent the spectrum of donors and recipients, including Alex Rodriguez of Cicero, IL. Brother of boxer Francisco “Paco” Rodriguez, Alex will ride in memory of Paco, who died from injuries sustained during a title bout in Philadelphia, and went on to save five lives through organ donation—one of the recipients, Ashley Quinter of Spring City, PA, will be riding alongside Alex. Ashley can breathe easy today because of the lungs she received from Paco Rodriguez. Now 24, Ashley affirms that “because of my hero, Paco, I have a bright future.”

Joey Ianiero of Bloomsburg, Pa. will ride alongside Brandon Witt of Sherman, Tex., whom he met after Brandon’s stepfather Thomas Pettit donated tissue that enabled Joey to return to playing sports four months after a devastating knee injury.

With a design inspired by floral clocks and clock towers from around the world, the 2012 Donate Life Rose Parade float will feature six enormous floral timepieces, and will be adorned with 72 memorial “floragraphs” (floral portraits) of deceased donors whose gifts gave life and time to so many, including one of Paco Rodriguez. A rose dedication garden honors more than 3,000 people worldwide; each vialed rose will bear a personal message of love and remembrance, while the garden’s clock hands will turn backwards in a nod to the thousands of memorial dedications. Anchoring the float is a 33-foot clock tower with a rotating sun/moon dial reminding us to make each passing day count.

Lastly, “…One More Day” reminds us that approximately 18 patients die each day waiting for an organ transplant in the United States. A single donor can save the lives of eight people through organ donation, while a single tissue donor can save and heal 50 others through needed heart valves, corneas, skin, bone, and tendons that prevent or cure blindness, heal burns and save limbs. Donate Life America hopes to encourage viewers to designate as donors, and give the more than 112,000 in our country waiting for a transplant, hope for “…One More Day.”

We’re excited to report that it’s been a huge success in its first year. We’ve had 485 wraps donated by many people in many communities! This means we’ve surpassed our goal of 400, and we are simply overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and kindness shown by those of you who knitted, and your fellow volunteers.

WRAPS, continued from page 1

Gift of Life volunteer Janet Keller shows off a few of the more than 100 wraps she collected for the program. thank you, Janet!

When Gift of Life took on this project, we had no notion as to how far its message would spread. We received wraps from donor families and recipients, hospital staff members, community organizations, churches, and other assorted groups. Wraps arrived locally and from out of state, including states as far as Maryland, Massachusetts and Florida. We recognize the reach of all of our volunteers, who collectively came together based on either their connection to donation or simply their belief in this project. A special thank you goes out to Janet Keller, whose son was a donor in 1994. She and her family contributed over 100 wraps alone, making her the biggest contributor to this program.

We can’t thank you enough for your compassion and sincere gratitude evident in your wraps’ patterns and colors. This project is an outstanding indication of the Gift of Life volunteers’ enthusiasm and compassion. This fall, during our Donor Recognition Ceremonies, families of donors will feel the warmth of your loving, comforting hug provided by your beautiful cloth as a symbol of honor for the ultimate gift their loved one had given to another.

Thank you for your time and effort. We are thrilled that so many people were able to join us to make this program a success.

Our daughter, Jillian Ryan Shallock, was born on

July 21, 2010 with a rare heart defect; Restrictive

cardiomyopathy (RCM). After Jillian was born,

she was transferred to CHOP and we were told

that eventually the blood flow to Jillian’s heart

would be restricted due to the rigidity of the walls and

the heart’s inability to normally relax. RCM is the rarest form

of cardiomyopathy and even more rare in children. It was a

devastating blow but still with the expertise and support of

Jillian’s healthcare team, 3 weeks after she was born, Jillian

was able to come home.

On November 11th, 2010, Jillian fell ill and this time her heart

would not recover. We were given our options and pursuing

a heart transplant was the only option we ever considered.

Jillian was put on the transplant wait list on December 1, 2010 and

Jillian received her gift on January 25th, 2011 due to the selfless

decision a family made in their most harrowing hour.

Our experience has led us to be proactive in getting more people

to become organ donors and educate them in the process.

Our family and friends began the process, while we were in

the hospital waiting for Jillian’s gift, of creating a non-profit to

do just that and Punk*A*Poo (Jillian’s nickname) was created.

It really is hard to think about what our life could have been like

had someone not made the decision they did…a decision that

saved our daughter’s life. However, the reality is that it is not

a decision you think about until you have to and Punk*A*Poo

is trying to change that.

Gift of Life is a wonderful organization that does an impressive

job at educating the community—the experience we had this

year with the Donor Dash had such a powerful impact on our

entire group. Seeing the celebration of life from both donors and

recipients humbled us. It is an annual event that we will continue

to be part of year after year. Hopefully we will meet our donor

family there one day, but until then we will continue to walk for

Jillian and her fairy donor angel!

Family House transplant families.

Tosha, a young mother of two children, is away from home, caring for her husband who is hospitalized in the Philadelphia region. He is gravely ill and desperately in need of a heart transplant. Separated from her children – who are being cared for by their grandmother – Tosha is without a car to travel the distance to see them.

Spending her days by her husband’s hospital bed, Tosha watches and waits for the gift of a new heart. Most days, her husband sleeps,

While organ transplantation may be considered a “miracle” of our time, the families of recipients are often forgotten in the lifesaving process—or worse, ignored. especially during the holidays, loneliness and isolation can be a significant challenge for families of transplant candidates.

being monitored and observed by the medical team. But Tosha is alone, waiting in unfamiliar surroundings, without emotional support, family or even someone to talk to who understands.

In the midst of this difficult time in her life, Tosha found Gift of Life Family House. With room for up to thirty families, Gift of Life Family House offers lodging and caregiver resources for transplant families. This unique and supportive environment has allowed Tosha to mingle with others in similar situations and talk about her experiences with the Family House staff. These initial conversations led Tosha to feel less isolated for the first time since her husband was hospitalized —she has found a “home away from home” at the Family House.

By directing your gift to one of the programs specifically designed to help our caregivers, you can make a substantial difference in the lives of many. Please consider one of the following for your holiday or end-of-year gift:

LIGHTNG THE WAY HOME, continued from Family House page 1

Caregiver Lifeline ProgramSupport the Gift of Life Family House Caregiver Lifeline Program, the first program of its kind to address the needs specific to transplant caregivers. The physical and emotional health of the transplant caregiver is so very important to the emotional and physical health of the transplant patient, which is why it is important we provide the necessary support to this group. Caregiver Lifeline Program is a web-based program which provides education and resources for transplant caregivers as well as workshops and seminars through the Gift of Life Donor Program region to assist throughout the transplant process.

Your gift to the Adopt-A-Family program will support a family’s stay and bridge the gap between the cost of a night’s stay of and the guest fee.

Another Successful “Kidney Open” Generously Raises Funds for the Family HouseOn Monday, August 29, 2011, one day after Hurricane Irene hit the Northeast, Dan Sinnott and Howard M. Nathan hosted the annual “Kidney Open” golf outing on the beautiful DuPont Course at DuPont Country Club in Delaware. The yearly outing commemorates Dan’s life-saving kidney surgery, promotes organ and tissue donation and raises funds for Gift of Life Family House.

The Kidney Open began seven years ago when Dan Sinnott was diagnosed with a tumor on his kidney. Yearning to play one last round of golf, he called his friends and organized a golf outing to take place the day before he underwent surgery. His surgery was a success, and with that life-changing experience he developed a newfound empathy for hospital patients. A year after his surgery, the same friends who attended his pre-surgery game, decided to make an annual event out of their golf outing. Five years ago, Dan collaborated with Howard Nathan, long-time friend and President/CEO of Gift of Life Donor Program to help expand participation of the outing.

Your gift ensures hope, comfort and community for tosha and others like her, bringing light into a place of darkness for families coming to this region for transplant care.

Tosha found solace at the Family House, but often transplant families face the holidays alone and anxious. But you can help the Family House light the way home for our transplant families this holiday season. Through a generous contribution this season, you or your organization can offer hope, comfort and community to transplant families, in place of isolation.

Although she continues to struggle with her husband’s condition and the separation from her children, Tosha found others who care, support and understand her at Gift of Life Family House. The Family House social worker supporta Tosha by listening and

providing resources to overcome the stress she has been feeling as a caregiver, in hopes that she will be able to maintain her support for her critically ill husband.

Today, Tosha realizes there are still many challenges ahead of her and her family. But she also knows that the Family House will be there for her as long as she is a transplant caregiver in the Philadelphia region. It is this foundation of support that gives Tosha and her family the help they so critically need while waiting for the “gift of life.” And it is the generosity of contributors to the Family House that make stories like Tosha’s a reality.

2. Spend less. Financial issues related to taking time off from work—or discontinuing work—and other costs associated with patient care are not uncommon for transplant caregivers. But the holidays don’t have to be about spending additional money on family and friends—there are other ways to show you care. Try spending more time doing fun things with your loved ones, like playing games or doing arts and crafts (home-made gifts are cost-effective and thoughtful during the holiday season!) In addition to saving some money, it’ll also encourage you to spend time with friends and family, which is a great way to improve your emotional wellbeing and reduce stress.

3. Relax and don’t forget about You. You may question, “How can I relax when I need to exercise, go to parties, and spend more time with family?” It is not always easy finding time for yourself during the holidays. Make sure to schedule in “you time” among your other responsibilities to give your mind and body a rest during the hectic holiday season.Transplant caregivers can many times feel that they are being pulled in many different directions with various responsibilities. Remember: If you don’t take time to relax and care for yourself, you could become sick and unavailable to care for anyone. Do something fun for yourself – go for a walk outside (be sure to dress for the cold!), don’t isolate yourself in the house, and give yourself a pat on the back when you have done something recognizable.

The holidays are about being with family and enjoying each other’s company. In order to do so, it is important to take care of yourself though healthy eating and exercise, spending quality time with special people, relaxing, and spending money reasonably. Follow those hints to feel better emotionally and physically, allowing you to provide the best care possible to the transplant patient.

**Quick Tip: Just because you are invited to 10 holiday parties, does not mean you have to attend all of them. Practice saying “No, thank you” and be realistic about your schedule and time. Spreading yourself too thin could cause additional stress in your life, which will make caregiving even more difficult.

Avoiding Holiday and Wintertime Stress for Caregivers The winter months can be a stressful time. Many different holidays are celebrated, which means an increase in family and social gatherings, and often spending more money. For a transplant caregiver, the winter months and holidays can feel like an additional burden to their already-hectic life. The following are some suggestions to help caregivers enjoy the winter and holiday months and avoid stress.

1. Continue to eat, drink and exercise as you normally would. Good nutrition and exercise habits have an impact on how we feel about ourselves, physically and emotionally. For many, it can be difficult not to overeat when attending holiday parties and gatherings. Overeating can cause changes in energy level, weight gain, and self-esteem. Colder weather may also make it more difficult to exercise. In addition to providing positive physical and emotional benefits, good nutrition and exercise can also help to ward off the cold or flu which are common in winter months. When eating out at parties, try pacing your intake and enjoy, but don’t over indulge. Also, try doing exercises around the house, or purchase an exercise DVD or tape. Try visiting http://www.acefitness.org/article/2863/ for at-home exercise tips.* Good nutrition and exercise habits will help you feel good, and in turn will help you provide efficient care to your loved one through the winter months. *Consult with your doctor before beginning any new exercise program.

thank You to our Heroes –Home Cooked, that is.

The smell of freshly baked cookies greets you at the door of the Family House, giving you a sense of comfort and home. When you round the corner into the kitchen, you see a delicious array of foods – from lasagna, meatballs and a fresh salad to barbeque chicken, macaroni and cheese and corn on the cob – with some chocolate chip cookies waiting for you for dessert! Thanks to our Home Cook Heroes, this is what dinner is like every day for the families staying at Gift of Life Family House.

The Home Cook Heroes are groups of volunteers from around the community who donate their time and kitchen skills to provide delicious meals for our families all year long. With dinner being served at 6:00PM every night of the year and brunch served on the weekends, the Home Cook Heroes truly help us to make our facility a “home away from home” for transplant families.

Our Home Cook Heroes have gone above and beyond any expectations set for the program. For example, one group brought in and wore sombreros for the taco night they planned and another group created centerpieces for all of the dining tables that brought all of the beautiful colors of autumn into the Family House!

We cannot express our gratitude to the Home Cook Heroes enough! We’re grateful for all of the thought and energy they put into making the Family House as comfortable and welcoming as possible, staying upbeat and positive in their support of our mission. Our families truly look forward to the meals that are awaiting them when they get back to the Family House from visiting their loved one in the hospital. Something as simple as a home cooked meal can provide the comfort and love that families of transplant patients need as they travel on their journey for the gift of life.

10. GivinG is better than reCeivinG. Get the warm and fuzzies!

9. have you ever Given a siLLy Gift to someone who didn’t reaLLy want it, and you feLt Like you wasted your money? That won’t happen with us. Make a contribution to the Family House in lieu of a gift.
