TODAY’S READINGS & REFLECTION First Reading — I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. (Wisdom 7:7-11). Psalm — Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy! (Psalm 90). Second Reading — Indeed the word of God is living and effective (Hebrews 4:12-13). Gospel — It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God (Mark 10:17-30 [17-27]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. WORDS OF WISDOM The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in today’s first reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is “sharper than any two-edged sword.” We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God’s commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from “popery” to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-Anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a “chapel.” Catholic “Emancipation” was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built gloriously beautiful churches as their first act on free soil!

From the Desk of the Pastor…

Dear Sisters and Brothers in The Lord: "Indeed the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account” Every time we pray the Act of Contrition we ask forgiveness; sin is first a thought, then spoken which then results in actions, and even worse, instead of doing good, we do nothing and this is called a sin of omission. I am convinced that all thoughts involve an intention and that is what should be judged. The world may condemn the action; God justifies us with his mercy because he knows the intentions of our hearts. How great is our God! Lord, take pity on us and save us; let these storms pass to calm us down to continue serving you in our brothers and sisters with joy. In this month of the Virgin of the Rosary we humbly bow our heads to pray for the world today as we are doing on Fridays during October. The devil is on the loose, even within the Church, provoking bad intentions resulting in evil deeds and destroying everything in his path. May our Heavenly Mother and the Archangels intercede for us so that the power of her Son will prevail and his Kingdom will come. We still have two Fridays remaining for this purpose. Come join us. Every week that passes we give thanks to our God for accompanying us and comforting us in these hours of testing. Let us continue coming to church, diligently praying 'in season and at out of season'.

Blessings, Father José Francisco Herrera, Servant to All

Vengan únanse a nosotros.
