DESCRIPTION

Southwaite Farmhouse and Annex sits in a quiet, off the road location in the valley of

Mallerstang, some 4 miles from Kirkby Stephen.

The Mallerstang valley is a hidden gem with spectacular landscapes and local landmarks such

as the Wild Boar Fell and Mallerstang Edge, beautiful birds, wildlife including red squirrels.

Primary and Grammar schools are at Kirkby Stephen (bus collection), church at the ne arby

hamlet of Outhgill, there is a pub in Nateby and Moorcock with train stations on the Settle

Carlisle at Garsdale and

Kirkby Stephen, with links to main lines. This area has become part of the expanded

Yorkshire Dales National Park, giving it protected status.

Southwaite Farm is the oldest in the dale and the first of 11 'customary' farms. It is unusual in

having its own royal charter dating from 1346 when Edward II allowed Roger de Clifford to

create a vaccary (a cattle farm) in the then royal hunting forest. There has probably been a

farmhouse on the site since this time. The property is a typical Dales long house which dates

from the 17th century and was

extended into the attached barn in the 1990's. The property boasts a wealth of original

character features including flag stone floors, the traditional pantry, exposed ceiling beams

and sash and mullion windows.

Internally the property offers spacious accommodation, on the ground floor is an open plan,

farmhouse style dining kitchen with AGA, a taditional Dales pantry/ utility, complete with the
