Pastor’s column

The Pony ExpressWhen someone mentionsthese three words, “ThePony Express, instantlyeveryone within hearingknows what the phrase isall about. Since 1861those three words havebeen romanticized to thepoint where one stillenvisions rugged, goodlooking young menblazing a trail across thecontinent on fast horses. They did so with the kindof courage that allowedthem to dodge arrows,

cross raging rivers, survive blizzards, and go withouteating while traversing the wild frontier with pin pointaccuracy.

The Pony Express reduced the time it took to delivera written document or package from one coast to theother to just 10 days. Many people used the PonyExpress as a communication link and companies wereencouraged to be creative so that people couldpurchase items and have them delivered to their door.I wonder if one of those young pony riders was JeffBezos’ great, great grandpa?

Anyway, it does sound like the Pony Express was theAmazon and FedEx of its day. Sadly though thatgrand adventure only lasted 18 months. It wasexceedingly profitable while it lasted, but when thetranscontinental telegraph opened for messagedelivery the Pony Express went bankrupt. We see thatspeed and convenience was the vision for foundingthe Pony Express and also its undoing.

Mike, what is your point in this whole story? Simply, that we have the greatest message that has everexisted. The story of God’s love through thesacrificial giving of His own son for our sins. Just asletters of inspiration were sent by the Pony Express tothose needing an encouraging word, so to should wesend words of encouragement by every modernmeans possible. Buy an inspiring book on Amazonand send it to someone who could use a spiritual,

mental, and emotional pick-me-up. Use Facebook,Twitter, Snapchat, or other social media tools tocommunicate your faith in Jesus Christ. Presently, we evenhave a pretty good message every Sunday on the churchFacebook page. Send it out to any and all that the HolySpirit may lay on your heart. May we embrace suchopportunities with the same urgency and couragedemonstrated by those early riders.

Yes, the Pony Express was good while it lasted, butwe have far greater tools at our disposal forcommunicating the greatest message of all time. Maywe be about our Father’s business just as Jesus was,and in the words of an old rancher, “make hay whilethe sun is shining”. With something to think about, this is Pastor Mike. Make it a great life or not, thechoice is yours.

Honoring BBC’s mothers and fathersSince we were unable to do our usual way ofhonoring our mothers on Mother’s Day at church, weare recognizing the oldest and youngest mothers inthis month’s newsletter. And since things probablywon’t be completely back to normal for Father’s Dayon June 21, we will do the same for our fathers.

Pictured below are our oldest mother and oldest fatherin BBC.

Pictured below are our youngest mother and youngestfather who just happened to be married to each other! Their four beautiful children are also in the picture.
