Dear Families, Friends, & Benefactors of Our Seton Catholic Schools,
School is off to another flying start. The principals, and members of the schools’ board, assure me this is
going to be a glorious year. We, in the Richmond area are blessed to have an entire school system from
pre-school (the only accredited Pre-School in Wayne County) through high school to serve not only our
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish but also the wider Richmond community. We are all blessed to have
outstanding principals, teachers, support staff, & board members.
Our enrollment has grown over the years and is holding steady which is remarkable as our parish’s, and our community’s,
average age has increased. Our parents want only the best for their children and the education they receive from our Seton
Catholic Schools is just that in our community. The State of Indiana’s voucher system, which allows parents to choose the
educational pathway for their children, has aided our efforts. With the voucher system, the percentage of our non-Catholic
students has grown. This allows more opportunities for us to shine even in the non-Catholic households of the Richmond and
Wayne County area. Little-by-little our schools’ light becomes a bit brighter, perhaps not as bright as our students’ brilliance
but brighter nonetheless.
I offer my heartfelt thanks to all who make our schools possible, especially the now united parish of the Richmond Catholic
Community who subsidize the schools to keep tuition as low as possible. I continue to offer thanks to our many benefactors
who received a Catholic education and want to give back something so that students today may receive the same blessing.
I ask for your prayers for all who work for the schools as they are paid, yes, but far below the rate for what they do.
They work with love in their hearts and treat their jobs as a ministry to their students and our parish community.
May God’s love be abundant in your lives as we are off to that flying start to this school year!
Thoughts, Thanks, & Prayers,
Fr. Kevin
Pastor

Dear Friends of Seton Catholic High School,
On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff I would like to thank you for willingly giving your
time, talent, and financial support to our school. SCHS exists today because you are concerned,
caring, and devoted, and know the importance of carrying on the mission of the Church through
Catholic education.
In this annual report are listed the names of those who donated to the 2015-2016 Annual Fund Drive. I sincerely
thank those donors, without whom our efforts to provide a quality Catholic education would not be possible.
Thanks are also in order for those families of deceased loved ones who have designated SCHS as a memorial
recipient, families who have established scholarships, and of course, those people who have worked tirelessly
“behind the scenes” for the betterment of Seton Catholic High School.
As I reflect on the 2015-2016 school year, I realize what a wonderful story we have to share with the whole
community. The hard work of students and faculty has resulted in successes both in and out of the classroom. The
mission of SCHS is being lived by our students and staff. Please be assured that our students are working hard to
reach their goals and to prepare to become future leaders of their parish and civic communities.
Sincerely,
Rick J. Ruhl
Principal
WORDS FROM OUR SCS’ PRINCIPALS
Dear Seton Elementary Schools Supporters,
I continue to be amazed at the generosity of our families, parishioners, donors to Seton Catholic
Schools! While we try to be great stewards of our budgets, there is often not enough to accomplish
some of the great things that we hope to do. And yet we are often surprised by donations that
appear which enable us to do those very things we thought impossible. We appreciate your faithful-
ness to the mission of our school and the hope that you have in us to do great things for your children, our students!
Thank you for encouraging us! Thank you for giving us possibilities! Our kids will surely benefit for a long, long
time due to your thoughtfulness!
God bless,
Kim T. Becker

Living A Dream
“What do you want to be when you
grow up?”
Seemingly as old as time, children
are asked “what do you want to be
when you grow up?” Over and
over as they progress from small
child into adolescence. Answers to
the question in preschool often
begin with things like a princess, a
super hero or a dog. As the stu-
dents get older the answers evolve
to things like a teacher, a doctor, a
fireman, a nurse or a baseball play-
er. Once high school begins,
things get more serious and more
specific… you hear things like a
neurologist, physical therapist,
chemical engineer, a high school
English teacher, and sometimes, a
priest. More often than not though,
what you hear at age 5, 10, and 15
are not the same. But to one Seton
Alum, he is living out his child-
hood dream.
A senior majoring in Geology and
Religious Studies at DePauw Uni-
versity, Alex Ruger (’13) says, “I
was the quintessential ‘dinosaur
kid.’ I have always wanted to be a
paleontologist. Dinosaurs have a
way of inspiring fascination and
awe in every child - everyone goes
through a ‘dinosaur phase’ during
the course of their childhood. It is
the lucky few who don't grow out
of it.”
This past summer, Alex was fortu-
nate enough to be an intern for the
Black Hills Institute of Geological
Research (a commercial fossil
hunting and preparation establish-
ment). Black Hills Institute is the
same group that worked on the
famous T. rex Sue*, the specimen
currently on display at the Field
Museum. They are also the same
group that prepared and mounted
almost all the fossils and cast spec-
imens on display at the Children’s
Museum of Indianapolis.
“While there, I learned a huge
amount about the process of dis-
covering, preparing, mounting, and

We have been blessed by the generosity of those who have gone before us
and their loved ones. Our heartfelt thanks to all who remembered Seton in
a very special way.
transporting fossils. I worked with
some fossil material that was from
the Late Jurassic Period, approxi-
mately 150 million years ago, but
the main focus of my internship
was the world's number one favor-
ite dinosaur, Tyrannosaurus Rex. I
was given the privilege of working
on the third best specimen in the
world, one which is going to the
Naturalis Biodiversity Center in
Lieden, Netherlands. Its nickname
is Trix (short for Beatrice, the
queen of the Netherlands). It's the
first specimen that will go on per-
manent display outside of North
America, and the first specimen to
have the real head mounted on the
skeleton as opposed to a separate
glass case (that big noggin can
weigh upwards of 400 pounds). I
learned a lot, and I got to meet a lot
of good, earnest, intelligent, and
passionate people. It was, in every
sense of the word, a dream come
true,” shared Ruger.
Alex encourages current students
to do things that they love! “Find a
passion, and pursue it to the abso-
lute best of your ability. But, and
this is a big but, enjoy the people in
your life. Your priority must be to
do right by your friends and your
family. It is a constant struggle, to
exercise mercy and compassion in
your daily life, believe me. Be un-
derstanding, be driven, be friendly,
and be steadfast.”
Grateful for his education at Seton
Catholic, Alex feels that all of his
former teachers are good, dedicated
folks, and he was lucky to have had
their influence growing up. In par-
ticular, he recalls Mr. Reichley.
“Mr. Dan ‘the man with the plan’
Reichley definitely had huge im-
pact on me. He is a true role model
for young Catholics. His humor
and diplomatic manner of speaking
have always stuck with me.”
Slated to graduate in May 2017,
Alex plans to work in paleontolo-
gy, regardless of the location or
institution. “I'd be happy working
in a museum, at a commercial
company, or going to graduate
school. I'm excited to see what is
next around the bend! I've got
something of a pipe dream that
may or may not ever happen, of
getting the Wayne County Museum
and Joseph Moore Museum there
in Richmond under one roof. Hav-
ing a major museum in my
hometown would be something
spectacular, but I am happy simply
doing what I love,” dreams Ruger.

covery of Sue by watching

‘Class’y Gazebo Blessing
If you have been to Holy Family
Church or the Seton Intermediate
building in the past few months,
you may have noticed a new addi-
tion to the grounds. The Seton Ele-
mentary Home & School organiza-
tion recently purchased a custom
built, outdoor classroom gazebo for
the school and it has already been
put to good use. Several classes
were able to utilize it before school
let out in May for class time. The
sixth grade students gathered in the
outdoor classroom to present their
“teach a lesson” projects, while
enjoying a glorious spring day. It
was even used as a beautiful setting
for prom pictures!
The Home & School group sur-
veyed the students and teachers at
the Intermediate Building last year
to find out what improvements or
additions they would like to see at
their campus. While there were
lots of ideas, one stood out from
the rest. The idea for an outdoor
classroom came from then fifth
grade student, Drew VanVleet.
He wrote, “An outdoor classroom
would be awesome. We could use
it for Science, Religion, Reading,
and even Math.” Drew included
some pictures he had found online,
one of which was a gazebo type of
structure. After reviewing all the
suggestions and ideas, the Home
& School board voted to proceed
with the outdoor classroom as an
enhancement project.
The installation of this new class-
room was a team effort! Home &
School board members, Jill
McGinty and Kara Hamilton, met
with Dave Inderstrodt, who took
care of the zoning and permitting
requirements. Rudy Reimsnyder
of the parish maintenance crew re-
moved a tree to make space for the
gazebo, and in exchange Home &
School paid to add a tree or bushes
to another area of the property. A
concrete pad was needed for the
gazebo to sit on. It was poured by
Smarrelli General Contractors.
Many research hours went into the
project as Home & School volun-
teers spent months seeking out low
maintenance gazebos.
Home & School President, Kara
Hamilton said, “We decided the
best option was a 16’x26’ vinyl
gazebo with a double metal roof,
benches all around, and 2 door-
ways. We chose a clay color that
would blend in with the natural
surroundings.”
After receiving several quotes, they
agreed to work with Hillside Gaze-
bos, contracted through Clear
Creek Amish Furniture in Waynes-
ville, Ohio. On May 9th, with stu-
dents and staff gathered around,
Deacon Frank and Deacon Jim
blessed the outdoor classroom. It
is a beautiful structure that will be
used by many for years to come.
Funding for this project came from
donations made by family and
friends of Seton Catholic students
through various fundraisers. The
largest fundraiser for Home &
School is the annual Walk-a-Thon,
which is held each October. Be on
the lookout for letters from stu-
dents with Walk-a-Thon details in
early fall. In recent years, Home
& School’s fundraising money has
been used to purchase playground
equipment at the Primary campus,
cafeteria tables, smart boards for
classrooms, and much more.
All parents with students in
PreSchool to Grade 6 at Seton
Catholic are welcomed and encour-
aged to get involved with Home &
School. Watch for details of their
events and meetings!
Deacons Frank and Jim bless our gazebo.
Intermediate students gather to check out
their new outdoor classroom.

Through our very generous donors, SCRIP proceeds, memorial gifts and subsidies from the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Parish, we are able to fill the gap between tuition and total expenditures. We are very blessed to have committed
families, parishioners and community members who are willing to share their time, talent and treasure with us. As you
look at the bar graphs below, you will see that tuition alone does not cover salary and benefits for our faculty and staff,
let alone all remaining expenses. It takes a village, and without your prayers and financial gifts we would not be able
to carry out the ministry of Seton Catholic Schools. Thank you for your support!
