Conventions?

I produced 3 types of productsMagazine Billboard Magazine Radio Advertisement

Page 3: In what what ways does your media product use

What are the conventions of RADIO ADVERTS?

Did research back in my research and planning Average duration of the advert are around 20-60 seconds long Explains the positives and what does the product include Has jingle/selling line/slogan of product included Music bed within advert Female Voiceover Tone of voiceover is cheerful and lively Addresses audience within the advert of the magazine Encouraging language used to convince audience to purchase service or product For my ancillary task, my radio advert is specifically for the regional magazine,

but it was hard to find something to reference and to compare my product to as there aren’t any in the market.

It was very hard to find an advert which actually promotes the magazine itself to establish conventions, but during form research I found out that it was basically the same as any other radio advertisement.

The advertisement must have a style or tone that suits the personality of the audiences of the specific station, which audience can relate to.

Did I follow conventions or not?

Average duration of the advert are around 20-60 seconds long Yes, the total duration of my advertisement is 42 seconds long

Jingle/selling line/slogan of product included Yes, at the end of the radio advert, the voice over states “explore the colourful Leicester that you have never seen before”, which is the selling line of my magazine

(Music bed within advert) Yes, I included a music bed in my advertisement, and the genre of the track is EDM, which fits with the theme of Leicester being fun and urban

Female Voiceover Yes, the voiceover of my advert is a female As the voiceover is female, in a way it suggests a traditional stereotype that females

consumers make up a large population of my target audience as they enjoy spending disposable income on shopping, nights out or clothes.

Because of that, they are convinced to spend their disposable income for entertainment and pleasure as they can relate to the advertisement.

My female voiceover does not have a British accent, which was intentional as I was hoping to bring out the multicultural setting that Leicester has, and by doing this I’m challenging hegemonic ideologies about the threats of multiculturalism as I’m trying to present immigrants that they are able to blend in and to contribute to society. However, it might not give Leicester a clear identity as Leicester is not actual not famous for it’s urban, modern and fun; but for the fact it’s culturally diverse.

Did I follow conventions or not? Yes, to conclude I did follow the basic

conventions of a magazine by including all the basic features of a magazine cover page. However, the cover lines of my magazine are positioned in different areas and are not in a straight column

The reason being is that I would like people to see Leicester in a different light, and to break the conventions and traditional ideology of Leicester being boring, as my target audience don’t know that there are lots opportunities offered to people,; where they can explore and experience different things. In this case, this case appeals to experiencers in the VAL types.

My cover page shows the iconic landmark of Leicester Market, which is known for it’s variety of fresh fruit and different kinds of items that are made by locals.

Page 9: In what what ways does your media product use

Did I follow conventions or not? The extreme long shot of Leicester market is

often seen in regional magazines, as it shows how majestic and how people appreciate the view of a certain scenery. However, the content itself is not conventional, as my magazine itself explores places and new opportunities people can experience , instead of appreciating the natural rural country side of Leicester.

I think that in a way my cover page does not really convey the very urban and exciting side of Leicester as Leicester market is a very traditional landmark of Leicester, which my target audience might not be interested in.

However, as Leicester market does sell a lot of interesting hand made products by locals, it might appeal to them as well.

My house style can be seen in my cover page, which would be yellow and black, with the font “The bold font”.

As I was hoping to convey Leicester as urban, fun and modern- I chose the colors yellow and black as they represent fun-loving and sophisticated respectively.

Did I follow conventions or not? For the layout of my contents page, I have chosen an

unconventional way of showing my photos, which I have decided to list my images in a collage format. My images are not placed align, but still in a neat way.

The images I include are a presentation variety of different content I would include in my magazine, which appeals to different target audience.

I included people with different nationalities, which I have stuck with my idea of Leicester being very multicultural.

On the bottom right corner is the image of the two empowered females presented in a low angled long shot, which connotes their success within society, which challenges the male gaze.

The image of the girl holding an immigrant sign shows that she is label by society even though she tries to fit in within society. Through this image I’m hoping to let my audience understand the difficulties immigrants go through as they try to fit into society.

It was not intentional that I did not feature any male characters or models in my magazine, but it was just a coincidence as traditionally females are represented as weaker individuals, and I was just hoping to emphasizes the importance of gender equality.

The extreme long shot of the church does not really appeal to my main target audience the millennial; but to my audience whom are rather sophisticated and are very religious. However, we can say that some millennial are interested in the architecture of the churches.

Did I follow conventions or not? There are indeed lots of articles

in which I did not take images for, which for example would be the DMU Film festival.

As DMU is a local university in Leicester, it is good to showcase the talents of students and their progression. If I was to include an image of that, it would make audiences feel proud, as they see that local students can equally have success as film producers out there.

Also, as my target audience are interested in watching films and art related items, an image of that might interest them.

Did I follow conventions or not?

Yes, to conclude I did follow the basic conventions of a magazine by including all the basic features of a magazine cover page

However, I tried to place the images in like a collage style, which images are aligned but, the edges are not touching each other.

Pull quotes should be included An introduction to the article would be included (Standfirst) Article is usually informal Headline for article is short Text is usually at size 11 Drops Cap included 2-4 columns of text Sticks with the house style, the color and fonts should be the same through

out the magazine Page number, name/logo of magazine at the bottom left/right of page Main image of the magazine is usually on the left of the page Credits of the editor/photographer included The use of rules of third for main image to emphasize product or scenery Image is to be bleed across the whole two pages

Did I follow convention or not?

To conclude, I did follow conventions yet the same time broke some conventions

Headline for article is short I hoped that a medium length title can impact people, because it tells more to people on what the article is about

However, the title ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ does not really sum up the article because the other cities were not mentioned enough in my article, which I have not made a comparison between their lifestyle at home and in Leicester. The reason I chose the title is to give an idea of two cities coming together.

The text of font is size 11 I used a size larger, because size 11 is just to small. I’m hoping that my readers get the best reading experience they can

Main image of the magazine bleed across page I pulled out the image across the two pages so that my readers can actually see the interior design of the café. If I just put the image on the page, it will get squashed. And I have use the rules of third to emphasizes and to show case the café’s unique interior design.

Page 19: In what what ways does your media product use

Did I follow convention or not?

The use of pull quotes are quite conventional, which we often see in interviews. In a way by using a convention, it helps convey a binary opposition of a new versus old of Leicester, by bringing a new location discover to my target audience and success for the girls whom are not originated from Leicester.

The images I have taken are both conventional and unconventional. The image of the two girls in a low angle long shot is quite conventional to

show success and triumph over a newly opened business as it empowers them. However, the choice of location is quite unconventional, which is also a mistake I made. I should have take an image of them in the bar working instead of in the park, which was a rural setting. It makes audience harder to understand and to connect with the narrative.

It can also be argued that I’m promoting hegemonic ideology that only by working hard, these immigrants can stay and live in peace due to their contribution. If they didn’t work hard, they would be sent away and deported back.

As for the extreme long shot of the interior of the bar, it is conventional and is often seen along with the use of rules of third. The rules of third is to emphasize the setting of the image and to emphasize the design of the interior.

Page 22: In what what ways does your media product use

Did I follow convention or not?

Yes, I did follow conventions I even added a boarder for the images to make it stand out I also added a picture of the product so that people are able to recognise it However, it a way I did break a convention, because I didn’t add just one

image on the billboard, I included some photos that are in the magazine itself

It was quite hard to find any billboard that promotes a regional magazine, which makes it hard to compare against a regular billboard. However, conventions of a regular billboard was quite easy to find, hence I adapted the conventions and created something new.

As I have chosen to present my images in a collage like style, mainstream publishers such as Archant might want my brand logo and identity to stand out instead of all the images I have presented on the page. An independent publisher will allow my own creative approach and even encourage me to take this approach as it emphasizes the unique selling point of my magazine.
