THE FOREST SITUATION IN GHANA

20% of original tropical forest area now left of it original size

Annual rate of deforestation is 750 hectares since 1981

Degraded area over 300,000 hectares

Sustainable timber production (Allowable cut) only 1million m3/yr.

Requirement of timber industry 4 million m3/yr.

Increase unemployment

A TIME BOMB!!!

The Deforestation Impact

Affecting the livelihoods of local people

disrupting important environmental functions and

severely disturbing the biological integrity of the original forest ecosystem .

There is a now a serious concern in GHANA about climatic change, soil erosion and large-scale desertification.

Rapid re-greening: a response to the problem of deforestation

Bamboo plantations: short term cash flows compared with other timber species

Very fast growing: timber substitute due to wood shortages / increasing timber prices

Bamboo for the environment: (erosion control, soil stabilization along river banks and slopes

Bamboo Industries and High Value Added Products :There is a growing market for bamboo products – US$7Billions

Bamboo occurs throughout Ghana

High density in the Western, Ashanti, and

Central Regions.

The segment extending from Abora Dunkwa

(west of Accra) northwest towards Assin

Foso and onto Kumasi in the Ashanti Region

marks one side of Ghana’s Bamboo curtain.

The segment extending southward from

Kumasi to Takoradi marks the other side.

This is also the area being exploited for the

local market in Accra and for the housing

industry in the Ashanti Region.
