Vision Statement

Incarnation Parish is a Roman Catholic community centered around the Lord Jesus, a living sign of hope to all that the Word made flesh dwells among us. His presence and love is encountered in all areas of our life together, especially in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in Sacred Scripture and in the Sacraments. We seek to make the Lord's presence and love known through service and edu-cation, through evangelization and through con-tinual conversion and renewal in Him. We entrust our life together and our sharing in the mission of Christ to the protection and intercession of Mary, Mother of the Lord and our Mother.

FUEL COLLECTION. On January 21st the annual “Fuel Collection” will take place. There is an additional envelope in the church packet that requests your generous contribution to defray the costs of the parish buildings. Needless to say, like your own homes, everyone is hit hard during the winter months. We ask every parishioner to be as generous as possible so that our parish buildings may remain warm and comfortable for everybody. Extra white “Fuel Collection” envelopes are in the church today for those who did not receive it in the mail. Thank you for your help.

To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.—2Thes 2:14

BRING A FRIEND TO CHURCH!

FROM THE PASTOR’S PEN

I overheard someone the other day say that her New Year’s Resolution was to go back to Church. I don’t know if she was Catholic or not but there was a time when almost 75% of Catholics went to Mass every Sunday. In fact that’s how one was considered a practicing Catholic: attending Mass every Sunday. Today there are people who consider themselves Catholic who rarely worship at Sunday Mass. Perhaps they come a few times a year. But then there are so many of us who attend Mass rather regularly each week. Sometimes we, too, are a little too liberal with our excuses for not attending Sunday Mass: the rain, a ballgame, work, travel. Here at Incarnation Mass is offered six times a weekend. That is a tremendous luxury that makes people from different parts of the world and even our diocese of Brooklyn very jealous. We can go to the 7:30 Mass before a day trip or join the worshipers at the 5 after a day at work. The only thing that keeps us away many times is our desire and our justification that it’s “ok” to miss Mass. Pope John Paul the Great wrote in his Apostolic Letter On Keeping the Lord’s Day Holy: Since the Eucharist is the very heart of Sunday, it is clear why, from the earliest centuries, the pastors of the Church have not ceased to remind the faithful of the need to be part of the liturgical assembly. “Leave everything on the Lord’s Day,” urges the third century text known as the Didascalia, “and run diligently to your assembly, because it is your praise of God. Otherwise, what excuse will they make to God, those who do not come together on the Lord’s Day to hear the word of life and feed on the divine nourishment that lasts forever?” The faithful have generally accepted this call of the pastors with conviction of soul and one should never forget the genuine heroism of priests and faithful who have fulfilled this obligation even when faced with danger and the denial of religious freedom. Sometimes we get distracted, sometimes we get deceived that something might be better or more important than our place at Mass. Let’s resolve to take our rightful place before the Altar each Sunday in 2018. Moreover, Let’s resolve not only to be here ourselves but to invite and bring a friend or family member to Mass with us. It really is that important. It really is what makes us Catholic. That’s not a bad resolution at all! God Bless!

PRAYERS FOR VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD. Over the next ten months you will be in-vited to pray at home

for more priests. We invite individual parishioners & fami-lies to sign up to receive a beautiful Good Shepherd statue into their home for one or two weeks and to pray for priestly vocations. A prayer kit & activity sheets about vo-cations will be also given to help you through your prayer week. At the end of the week, on Saturdays, we ask you to return the Good Shepherd Statue to the Parish Office so that it may be handed over to another parishioner and/or family on Sunday. You may keep the activity sheets for further prayer and reflection. Please consider signing up for our Prayer Campaign for Priestly Vocations. Simply fill in the form below and return it to the Parish Office or in the collection as soon as possible. Father Chris, Father O’Connor or a member of the Vocations Committee, will contact you soon afterwards about all the details.

LIVING LIGHTS. Securing an Annual Living Light Votive Candle to Honor a Loved One, Remember a Special Intention, or Mark a Milestone is a con-tinual and wonderful way to celebrate sentiments and offer intercessions of remembrance, hope and gratitude. Two wall mounted electric candle

stands now hang in our church on either side of the newly restored and expanded Saints’ Shrine. These unique and inviting candles are made of real wax with electrified illu-mination to insure your Living Light burns brightly throughout the year. A plaque displaying the name of your loved one, your intention, or your milestone will be mounted before your Living Light Votive Candle. Plaques will remain for the year you have secured your Living Light and may be renewed or rededicated for addi-tional 12 month periods. In addition to its rightful place before your Living Light in the Saints’ Shrine, your Loved One, Special Intention, or Milestone will also be included in the Living Light Section of the Parish Website. The Shepherd Speaks

We now turn to the celebration of Mass, start-ing with the introductory rites. These rites are not marginal: they dispose us to listen in faith to the word of God and to partake worthily in the Eucharistic sacrifice. Each ritual gesture is expressive of the mysteries we prepare to celebrate. As the priest kisses the altar, we are reminded that Mass is an encoun-

ter of love with the living Christ. As we join in making the sign of the cross, we recall that by our baptism we share in the love of God, Fa-ther, Son and Holy Spirit, revealed on the cross of Christ. -General Audience—12.20.17

MINISTRY OF HOSPITALITY. Those who are inter-ested in the Ministry of Hospitality to welcome visitors and parishion-ers to our doors at Sunday Mass are asked to contact Father O’Con-nor for more information. This ministry is a result of the Parish Assembly and parishion-ers’ desire to make Incarnation a more welcoming place.
