Vision Statement

Incarnation Parish is a Roman Catholic community centered around the Lord Jesus, a living sign of hope to all that the Word made flesh dwells among us. His presence and love is encountered in all areas of our life together, especially in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in Sacred Scripture and in the Sacraments. We seek to make the Lord's presence and love known through service and edu-cation, through evangelization and through con-tinual conversion and renewal in Him. We entrust our life together and our sharing in the mission of Christ to the protection and intercession of Mary, Mother of the Lord and our Mother.

New Nativity Statues. To help celebrate our Parish Feast, the Liturgy Committee last year decided to get ad-ditional figures for the Nativity scene to be placed in our church each Christmas. If anyone would like to memori-alize any of the new Nativity statues please contact the rectory. A plaque hangs each Christmas Season near the Nativity with the listing of the individuals to remember in prayer. Available for Memorializing: Shepherds, ox, ass, sheep and lamb. Please check with Fr. O’Connor for more info.

Blessing of Baby Jesus Figures Dec 16 at 10:30 Mass. We invite all our parishioners and families to bring the stat-ue of the Baby Jesus from the nativity scenes in their homes, under their Christmas Trees or from their front lawns to the 10:30 Mass next Sunday. May the blessing and these images of Jesus, the Word Made Flesh, remind us that it is Christ’s Mass that is cele-brated every December 25th.

“Be vigilant at all times.”

From the Pastor’s Pen

I grew up understanding that May and October were months dedicated to Mary. Each Spring we had our procession and May Crowning at my grammar school. It was a big deal as we all got to ditch our plain school uniforms and wear our Sunday finest. I still remember the long procession as the 600 or so of us made our way around the block. Each class was lead by eighth grade girls who always looked like princesses and carried fragrant flowers that would adorn our Lady’s Altar in the church. Likewise, every October in the Fall we would pray the Rosary over in church at Wednesday afternoon devotions. Understandably those two months of May and October were “Mary’s Months.” Yet when I entered the seminary and studied theology and later the Church’s Liturgy, I realized that Mary had “her Own Season” on the Church calendar: the Season of Advent. First of all, Advent has two beautiful feasts of Mary the first which we celebrated last week, the other which we will celebrate this week. On December 8, we recall the beginning of Mary’s life in the womb of St. Anne. Mary was conceived and preserved free of sin because later on she herself would conceive the Sinless One who would wash away our sins in his own Blood. On December 12 all of the Americas look to Guadalupe Mexico where Mary revealed herself to the poor Juan Diego who represents each of us in our various needs: she never shuns us. More importantly, Mary is the perfect example of welcoming God’s Presence completely. Throughout her life she was ever attentive of her Son, pondering what His life and ministry meant for herself and for her world. Of course His Incarnation, which Advent prepares us to recall, is the ultimate “in-breaking” where humanity can actually welcome the Divine. Celebrating this Marian Season is not just attending Mass on the Holy day last Saturday, there is more, of course. Maybe now is the opportunity to return to praying the Rosary. Maybe it’s the chance to teach how to pray, or pray together with, the next generations of “Mary’s children.” God Bless!

The Annual Catholic Appeal: Answer the Call! Please join us in our support of the various ministries and outreaches of the diocese which cannot be undertaken alone here at Incarnation. Use the form below and simply put it in an envelope marked “Catholic Appeal,” drop the gift in the collec-tion and the parish will send it to the Appeal Office. Envelopes are also by the doors of the church today. You may mail your pledge directly to 310 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn, NY 11215. Our Parish Goal is 500 pledges. Please be one of them. Give a gift today. All monies collected over goal will stay here at the parish. Even a small or one tine gift is both needed and most appreciated.

LIVING LIGHTS. Securing an Annual Living Light Votive Candle to Honor a Loved One, Remember a Special Intention, or Mark a Milestone is a con-tinual and wonderful way to celebrate sentiments and offer intercessions of remembrance, hope and gratitude. Two wall mounted electric candle stands now hang in our church on either side of

the newly restored and expanded Saints’ Shrine. These unique and inviting candles are made of real wax with electrified illumination to insure your Living Light burns brightly throughout the year. A plaque displaying the name of your loved one, your intention, or your milestone will be mounted before your Living Light Votive Candle. Plaques will remain for the year you have secured your Living Light and may be renewed or rededicated for addi-tional 12 month periods. In addition to its rightful place before your Living Light in the Saints’ Shrine, your Loved One, Special Intention, or Milestone will also be included in the Living Light Section of the Parish Website. See the blue brochure by the church doors or contact the rectory for more info: 718-465-8534.

Giving Tree. In the upcoming Sea-son of Giving, a beautiful Giving Tree containing decorative gift tags will be placed in the back of the church for the First Sunday of Ad-vent. Parishioners are invited to take the gift tag(s) to purchase items for Christmas. Green tags are for the children at Hour Children in Long Island City. White tags are for those children from St. Mary, Star of the Sea in Far Rockaway, and Red tags are to be given to needy children by Unidos Latinos of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish in Astoria. Everyone is invited to participate in this year’s Giving Tree – children and adults. Feel free to take more than one gift tag. Join us in the approaching Season of Giving as we celebrate God’s gift of Jesus in our hearts & lives.

ADVENT WREATH. For those who have an Advent wreath at home for family prayer during this holy season, today you light the first and second purple candles.

CHRISTMAS PLANTS that will decorate our church throughout the Christmas Sea-son may be donated. You may wish to donate IN

MEMORY OF or IN HONOR OF a loved one. The donation is $15.00. Christmas donation envelopes are available in the church today. It is only through your gen-erosity that our church is decorated so beautifully for Advent and Christmas. Please return your offering in the collec-tion or at the Parish Office.

Reconciliation. When making your Christmas “To Do List” make sure you have added receiv-ing the Sacrament of Penance. Con-fessions are on Saturdays from 4 to 4:45PM.

The Shepherd Speaks

On this 2nd Sunday of Advent, the Liturgy places us in the school of John the Baptist, who preached “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins”. Perhaps we ask ourselves, “Why do we have to convert? Conversion is about an atheist who becomes a believer or a sinner who becomes just. But we don’t need it. We are already Christians. So we are okay”. But this isn’t true. In thinking like this, we don’t realize that it is precise-

ly because of this presumption — that we are Chris-tians, that everyone is good, that we’re okay — that we must convert: from the supposition that all things are fine as they are and we don’t need any kind of conversion. - Angelus 6.XII.15

Reconciliation Monday—December 17. Join with Cath-olics throughout the City in receiving God’s Mercy before Christmas. Con-fessions here at Incarnation will be after the 8:30AM Mass and from 4PM to 8PM. Prepare for Christmas with the Sacrament.

The Infancy Narratives. Tuesday, December 18 at 7:30PM in Our Lady’s Meeting Room. Come and reflect on the stories we have known from our birth: the stories of Jesus’ Birth. Explore the accounts from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke which tell us “this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.”

Gracious God and Father, we enter into your presence realizing you know us better than we know our-selves. You know the cares and suf-ferings we carry in our hearts. You call us to holiness and we trust you to lead us together on our journey to be a renewed Church, for with you all things are possible. Create us anew in Jesus Christ your Son. Liberate us from all that keeps us from you. Heal us from every form of sin and vio-lence. Transform us to live your Word more profoundly. Awaken us to the sacred; rebuild trust among us. Enliven our parishes; reunite our families. May your Holy Spirit empower us to live as a community of love, freed to share in your work of recreating our world and restoring justice. We believe you are doing something new, calling us to arise together in Christ to celebrate the fullness of life. Amen.
