2017 NORDIC FEST BOARD

I moved to Decorah in 1986 to work at Vesterheim Museum, and it would be difficult to work there and not feel inspired now and then. As an Irishman I thought ethnic culture was good poetry, music, beer, and parades. Like the Irish, Scandinavians do a pretty good job at those, too. But they have taught me over the years what a deep cultural connection can really mean, and when I was lucky enough to visit Ireland—again thanks to Vesterheim—I was astounded at how moved I was. Celebrating Scandinavian culture helped me discover and celebrate my own. Thinking about it, no matter what else we are, we are all immigrants, waking each day to new lives in a new world. Of course I am honored to be chosen as Grand Marshal, but I can think of so many who have done so much more for Decorah and Nordic Fest and are far more deserving. During the Fest, I just take lots of photos and do a lot of dancing. Which is what I try to do any time I can, Fest or not. During the parade, I stand with a large group of kids at the museum end of Water Street yelling “Candy! Candy!” and try to keep them from getting run over by a Viking Ship as they scurry to collect the tossed Tootsie Rolls and other treats. This year I get to toss the candy myself. I had better stock up.

Sally (L’Heureux) Stromseth began rosemaling in 1981. After watching the visiting artist/teacher from Norway Bergljot Lunde during Nordic Fest, she was inspired and began adult education classes in rosemaling that fall. Over the years she has studied under Betty Dowe, Ruth Green, Gary Albrecht, Bergljot Lunde, and Nancy Schmidt. She ran the Nordic Fest Arts and Crafts Center with Marcia Fox from the mid-eighties until 2013. She also served on the Nordic Fest Board of Directors from 2000-08, and designed the 2006 Nordic Fest button which was also used on trivets. She has been rosemaling plates for the Grand Marshal, Flag Recipient and Nordic Fest Board President since 2000.

Stromseth and her husband Don ran their own wedding photography business from 1974-1990 alongside operating the Stromseth family farm, and they currently farm cropland. She retired from Decorah Public Library in 2015 after serving 20 years as children’s librarian and has taught kindergarten Sunday School and sang in the church choir for more than 30 years at Decorah First United Methodist Church. Since retiring, Stromseth keeps busy with rosemaling, volunteering as an instructor for the fourth grade art immersion classes at Vesterheim. Sally enjoys spending time with her daughters, Sara Stromseth-Troy (husband Nate Troy) of Cresco and Mary Marx (husband Dan Marx) of Decorah, and her two grandsons, James and Will Marx.

ABOUT THE ENTERTAINERS

ENTERTAINERS AT VESTERHEIM

A national program that presents quilts in patriotic colors and designs to American Veterans.

Quilts of Valor will be presented to local veterans at 2:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday during Nordic Fest.

The presentations are open to the public and will take place in the Middle School Gym.

Quilts of Valor

METTE BOWEN—Are you the proud owner of a bunad, or hope to be? Learn all about proper care, storage, and cleaning of these heirloom garments from this bunad expert. Mette is a Vesterheim trustee, who was previously the owner operator of L&M Fabrics in Decorah and had the largest selection of cotton bunader under one roof in the United States.

LIZ BUCHEIT—An award-winning silversmith and co-owner of Crown Trout Jewelry in Lanesboro, Minnesota, presents Traditions in Transition: Fantasy Filigree Jewelry, describing her creative process. Liz is influenced by her Norwegian ancestry and trained in traditional Norwegian silversmithing. She keeps close ties to her heritage, working as a contract conservator at the Vesterheim Museum and crafting wedding crowns for brides, while venturing into contemporary design, making jewelry and costume accessories for celebrities Prince, Billy Idol, Cher, and U-2. Liz draws inspiration from Norse mythology, even having an entire line of jewelry inspired by the legends of the Huldra. She will talk about how she draws from these rich, traditional resources while creating jewelry that is a unique expression of the artist and her environment.

THE NEWLANDS CO-OP—Nordic Roots music by accomplished musicians Norwegian Vidar Skrede and Finnish-American Sara Pajunen.

ONEOTA FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTS—The Viking Battalion, the story of the 99th Infantry Battalion, told by battalion members. This battalion was the only Norwegian-American Battalion in WWII, formed of Norwegians living in America and Norwegian Americans. They fought in Europe and were the Guard of Honor for the Royal Family on their return to Oslo in 1945. The Oneota Film Festival brings together hundreds of film enthusiasts in scenic Northeast Iowa to enjoy award-winning films.

SKJALDBORG—This group from Elk Horn, Iowa, will present their Viking encampment and will entertain throughout the day with full Viking combat demonstrations. Skjaldborg means “fortress of shields.”

“OLE OLESON”—portrayed by living history presenter Roger Hellesvig from Minneapolis, will be in Vesterheim’s Haugan House, where he’ll bring the story of Norwegian immigration to life with storytelling and conversation around the contents of his immigrant trunk.

JIM BUSTA BAND WITH MOLLIE B—The Jim Busta Band has been performing for over 35 years. Their music is a mix of polkas, waltzes, and other two-step numbers featuring many vocals with lead singers Mollie B and Chad Busta. Mollie B, Jim’s daughter, is nationally known in the polka world and has her own televison show on RFD-TV: “The Mollie B Polka Party.” She also performs in “The Mollie B Christmas Special” in Branson, Missouri.

JOSHUA VORVICK—Singer/Songwriter Joshua Vorvick is a classically trained vocalist who lost his way. Led astray by the trappings of pop, jazz, roots and rock he was banished by the village elders and left with no alternative but to write his own dang songs. This is Joshua’s first appearance at Nordic Fest, which will fulfill a decades-old request by his sister that he “go play in traffic”.

KYLE AND DAVE—Kyle and Dave have been performing an eclectic blend of traditional and modern Norwegian folk music, making them Nordic Fest favorites for nearly two decades.

LUREN SINGERS—The oldest Norwegian-American male chorus in continuous existence in the US. The Luren Singers perform Norwegian national songs and popular American repetoire.

MACY VINSON— Macy Vinson, from New Albin, Iowa, is sixteen years old and started singing locally when she was fourteen years old. She performs at open mics, small town celebrations, and at her church. She enjoys singing a variety of old and new country and pop songs.

MICHELLE LYNN— Michelle Lynn specializes in taking true tales from history - full of depravity, folly, and vice - and presenting them as melodies for inspiration, amusement, and reflection.

MEADOWLARK VALLEY— Meadowlark Valley is the music of J.J. Schrick including influences from folk rockers such as Fleet Foxes, Mumford and Sons, and Father John Misty. Playing all the instruments himself, J.J. recorded an album over the course of a summer in the studio connected to his college’s radio station. Deeply rooted in nature and metaphor, Meadowlark Valley’s raw sound tells of friendships and relationships.

NORDIC DANCERS—A unique group of folk dancers that help us remember the traditional folk dances of Scandinavia. The Nordic Dancers consist of two groups of area students; the Junior Nordic Dancers and the Senior Nordic Dancers. They are accompanied by the Nordic Dancers Orchestra.

THE ODD BALLZ— We’re four luther college grads who have come together to playtime music, including classic rock, oldies, and country for weddings, parties, and corporate events.

THE OK FACTOR—The OK Factor is a progressive folk duo comprised of Olivia Diercks on cello and Karla Dietmeyer on violin. Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, The OK Factor writes original music influenced by various genres and styles, and performs and conducts educational workshops primarily across the Midwest. Though they are both classically trained musicians, their passion lies in stretching the limits of their instruments, and encouraging others to do so, as well. Both are Luther graduates.

THE PAPER DAYS— The Paper Days are a contemporary folk band based in Minneapolis. The band’s material draws on influences from folk, rock and pop. Four-part harmonies, accordion melodies and innovative songwriting deliver intimate, moving music.

ROCHESTER AREA ACCORDION BAND—The Rochester Area Accordion Band brings “Freshly Squeezed Music” to Nordic Fest! The band has been active since 1998 with the 14 accordionists playing a variety of music from old popular songs, classical, sing-along, the usually expected polkas, and many Scandinavian favorites.
