Gratularer med dagen!

From the President: Elaine Homan

Dear Members, Please bear with me…the October issue has always been a fun one for me to design. I don’t get a lot of time to do this for most of the months, but I really like to “spook it up” a bit for October, and also make the December newsletter filled with holiday cheer.

We are starting to close down this year’s business at the lodge. Lots of things to finish before 2018 blows in! We’ve scheduled Fire Inspections, Fire Extinguisher Inspections, Drinking Water Check-ups, and will be cleaning the kitchen for the Jeffco Health Inspection in Nov. or Dec. Trollheim is waiting for the crews to show up for both the shingles and the metal roofing, soon. Our Christmas Fair will be on Nov 3 and 4 and Bev King is planning to be there. She has been working on this event at home while she recuperates. And the Christmas Fair also marks the time when the store expands into the Viking room and Norske Butikken is open more often! Always good news for many of us shoppers! But definitely start that Christmas Shopping at the Christmas Fair with all the vendors.

On Dec. 2nd, the Finnish Club will celebrate the Christmas Holiday, renting our main hall. The Family Jul Party will be held on Dec. 16th.

Get your calendars out and mark the events coming up!

Thanks for all your support! Elaine Homan

September General Meeting October 16, 2017; Potluck, 7 pm

Presentation by Kat Melheim

We will have our potluck dinner after the opening part of our meeting. After the dinner we will have a short business meeting and then the presentation.

RICH Learning is an international arts-based program designed to teach preschool children through music, dance, theatre, and visual art. Kat Melheim was able to travel to Ethiopia with a group of American teachers in June of 2016 through RICH Learning. They partnered with young adults from Ethiopia as co-teachers and translators to teach the children English through the arts. In addition to teaching, Kat was able to explore this beautiful country. The presentation at the Sons of Norway lodge will be a photo journey through Kat's experience of the country, from interacting with the school children to learning about Ethiopian coffee to other cultural experiences.

Trollheim Board News

Lights, Action, …! The board met on October 2nd and discussed an opportunity to save some money as we update our lighting in the main hall and other rooms of our building. Fluorescent lighting is being phased out due to the tubes contain hazardous mercury. It is more difficult to find places to buy replacements or take burned-out bulbs to a disposal site. Xcel energy is offering a rebate for retro-fitting with the new LED tube lighting, which are more efficient in light-hours (50,000 hours!) and can help save money on our utilities. More info will be forthcoming at our next General Meeting.

Sorry, Michael Johaneson, I missed your article this month! The Editor

Leif Erikson and Christopher Columbus Two great explorers/adventurers important to the New World are celebrated in October. Leif Erikson Day is not a recognized Federal Holiday (yet), but is proclaimed in most states on Oct. 9 each year. Columbus Day has become a Federal Holiday and always determined by the government to create a 3-day holiday weekend. While it is now an established fact that Leif Eriksen arrived centuries earlier than Columbus, you have to give Columbus his due. The window of history opened by Columbus’s voyages coincided with the needs of many countries who also were eager to establish their own hold on new lands and resources. European countries sent many people to settle in their territories over the subsequent centuries after Columbus set sail in “1492”, The Viking Age settlement(s) never had that option. This year, 2017, October 9th, or Leif Erikson Day falls on Monday, which is also designated as Columbus Day. Our Norwegian forefather and his crew can be honored on a 3-day weekend, too. For Columbus Day weekend, do something Nordic! Remember, the Butikken is opened on Saturdays!

Delma Taylor

May 28, 1927 – September 4, 2017 Delma was born on a farm12 miles west and 12 miles south of Hemingford, Nebraska. She was raised on the family farm. As a child, one of her favorite things to do, besides playing in the wheat storage barn and atop of the windmill, was to find her favorite cat in the barn yard, dress the cat in doll clothes and push the cat around the yard in a doll buggy.

Delma graduated from Hemingford High School, then attended beauty school. She then moved to Denver to work as a beautician at the May Company.

Delma met Ed Taylor through mutual friends, they were married in 1949 and spent 67 wonderful year together. They had 2 children, Cherlynn and Ron. Delma and Ed also raised their granddaughter, Cheri Temple. Delma and Ed loved their 3 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren.

Delma and Ed loved to travel the world and loved to travel with relatives that could travel with them. Delma volunteered with Girl Scout, Boy Scout, PTA, church activities, Jobs Daughters, DeMolay, Campfire Girls, the Denver Needlework Gild, and many other organizations.

Later in life, Delma was a member of two Scottish Clans, Clan Cameron and Clan Graham. Though she was only a member of the Sons of Norway for only 4 months, she enjoyed the other members, the activities, and the Christmas Market.

Delma and Ed Taylor, after 67 of marriage, are together again in their eternal home in heaven. Editor’s note: Delma’s husband Ed Taylor, also a member, passed away on April 11, of this year.

Family Christmas Party “Jul Party” Our annual Family Christmas Party will be on December 16th, 2017. More info will be coming in the November newsletter. Watch for it!

Charles Allen Knutson

December 24, 1937- September 14, 2017

Charles Allan Knutson (Charlie) was born on December 24th, 1937 in Whitehall, Wisconsin, just in time for Christmas. He grew up in Blair Wisconsin on a little farmhouse. His parents were Omer and Eleanor Knutson and twelve years after he was born came his baby brother Orlin Knutson.

When Charlie was in 5th grade a piano teacher, named Flavianne Hanson came to Blair and with her arrival his life took a significant turn in the direction of music. He learned everything he could about music and became an accomplished piano player; by the time he was in high school he was teaching piano lessons, and playing for weddings, funerals, ensembles, parties; you name it.

Charlie was born to be a musician! His entire life was filled with music in one way or another; as a drum major, as a performer in plays, as a pianist in various bands and groups, as a choir director, as an instrumental music and vocal music teacher, as an Orff instructor, as a church organist and pianist, and as an elementary school music teacher.

Charlie worked in various school districts in Colorado during his 44 YEARS as a music teacher. He taught hundreds of students in that time and made an indelible impact on the schools he worked with. He brought in Orff instruments, set up a movement and music lab - which included grant money for a dance teacher. He put on epic music programs for the entire school. He was tireless in his dedication to his craft and he loved the students and the staff he taught with, forming many collaborative relationships over the years.

Charlie was also a church organist and pianist throughout his life. He was a perfectionist when it came to making sure his church music was perfect and he spent hours practicing. Next time you go to church, think about the person providing the music every week and how much that adds to the service. He always loved it when people commented on the music or noticed his hard work.

If you knew Charlie at all, you knew he loved Norway and all things Norwegian (yes, even Lutefisk). He loved Norway so much he started going to visit Norway in 1968 and kept going for the rest of his life. He studied at the University of Oslo up until he was in his 70’s, passing all the levels of Norwegian language classes and becoming so fluent that he began to teach Norwegian classes in Colorado.

As if learning Norwegian wasn’t enough, while in Norway he studied Norwegian folk music and gave concerts at the University of Oslo. He also did extensive research on this family lineage and staged a huge reunion in Norway with all of his Norwegian relatives.

Charlie was incredibly social. If he met you for two minutes you were probably fast friends afterwards. He was actively involved in many social activities, clubs and groups for his entire life. He was especially proud to be part of the Rocky Mountain Rainbeaus, the PrimeTimers and the Sons of Norway Trollheim Lodge.

Charlie is survived by his former spouse Mary Isabella, his daughters Kari Knutson and Kim Terry and four grandchildren and in the hearts of anyone who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers or donations, please pick up the phone and call someone who you’ve been meaning to call, smile at a stranger, give someone a hug, enjoy any kind of music, find ways to reach out to people, enjoy a good meal with a friend, and if you are feeling up for it, learn some Norwegian. He would love all of that. If you would like to memorialize him you can make a donation to any organization in his name.

Walleye Fish Fry 2017 We have lived through another Walleye Fish Dinner this year. It was a successful one, judging by all the positive comments and the NET EARNINGS from the ticket sales and walleye sales afterward. Along the way while preparing the meal, we learned a few things--- we over-estimated the coleslaw and we underestimated mix for the breading for example.

Bev King provided us with the recipes as well as made the order for the Walleye Fish and had it shipped. On Friday, Harlan Hagan and Michael Homan drove to the airport to pick it up FRESH from Bemidji, MN. They delivered it to the lodge at 1 pm. Doris Sundet and Carole Olsen washed and prepped the fish for storage overnight in the cooler. It was perfect for Saturday’s breading.

We also needed many new crew members to pull this together. People who had been available before could not be there this year, due to illness, injury or travel. This resulted in new people stepping up to do fish breading and fish frying, as well as cooking. Your President was one of those new people. There is a lot of work to do for 3 days.

We found we were lacking for a photographer. Those who usually took pictures, were busy with the meal. We need someone who doesn’t want to do the kitchen stuff but can still take pictures. Any volunteers for next year? I think I speak on Donna Robinson’s behalf since she and I both lead the committee this year. We would like to thank our volunteers, listed below:

Dameklubben: Barb Bessesen; Barb Hessel; Barb Stover; Ruth Peterson; Ruth Heubner; Jacquie Bland; Diane Molter; Marty Dahle; Linda Ault; Connie Bartram; Louise Bath; Judy Lee Paez; Nina Ehlers; Karalou Mattern; Linda DeMarche; Joan Enget; Donna Robinson. These ladies came on the Wednesday to set up our tables and get salt-pepper-sugar on the tables. They also filled bowls with individual butterpats and creamers and placed them in the cooler until Saturday. Many of them continued that day to help with other prep work in the kitchen. Thank you all!

Train Trip, Anyone?

(From Last month)

With new info below!

Recently, we have had a few requests about traveling, or small trips, especially now that the Ski Train to Winter Park has returned. There have been a few suggestions that do not include skiing, for those of us who aren’t up to that anymore. Ideas so far are:

1. Take Ski Train/Amtrak for the 1-day round trip to Winter Park in the first months of 2018. Skiing, shopping, lunch or other activities could be explored.

2. Take Amtrak for a short trip to the mountains for lunch and view the aspen in the fall.

3. Take Amtrak for an overnight trip to Glenwood Springs or Grand Junction to see the sites.

Anyone interested in a trip with fellow members? Please call any of the board members if you have another idea.

Bus trips are not out of the question, either. Bring us an idea, and let’s see if it can work. Advanced planning is necessary! New Info: After the Sept NL came out, our previous editor, Dawn Nelsen sent an e-mail with her offer to arrange a bus trip somewhere for our lodge members and friends. We have many options; let’s take advantage of them and go somewhere! Call, email, or mail me your ideas for a 1-day outing or an overnight trip for 2018. Convention 2018 Don’t forget to let any of our board members if you or someone you know who would like to attend the convention next June 10-14, 2018. We generally send 6-8 delegates. You can contact any of Trollheim board members on page 11. District 6 Nominating Committee Anyone interested in becoming a part of the D6 Board of Directors can speak to the Zone Nominating Committee member.

At Zone 8 (Colorado), our Nominating Committee member is Dan Schauer from Fjelldalen Lodge 6-162. To contact him phone 303-795-2255 or email him at [email protected]. New Conveniences for Members Come with Dues

Here are a few items that are part of the changes coming with the simplified du structure, beginning Jan. 1, 2018.

Automatic monthly withdrawal available – Effective with their 2018 dues renewal, members in U.S. lodges will have the option to pay their dues by automatic monthly withdrawal from their U.S. bank account. Annual payment of dues by check or credit card will continue to be available.

Local currency applies – No more confusion about adjusting dues based on the exchange rate for Canadian and Norwegian memberships. Beginning January 1, International dues for Canadian and Norwegian memberships are based on the local currency (Canadian dollars or Norwegian kroner), and hence will no longer be subject to exchange rate fluctuations. (Dues paid by credit card from a non-U.S. bank may be subject to an exchange rate and/or service fee set by the bank and/or credit card processor.)

Dues more easily explained to potential members – The new dues structure is simplified to maintain consistency throughout the U.S., making it easier for lodges to sign up new members and to discuss the dues with others outside of their lodges and districts.

Have questions on the above? Send an email to Sons of Norway [email protected], and staff will provide timely answers.
