Changing Gender Roles- Equal rights, equal opportunities for men & women:

Early societies had rigid roles for men and women with attributes were labeled as being masculine and feminine. Man was considered as provider of basic necessities for family and woman the child bearer and caretaker of home. Till recently women were accorded the role of the inferior sex and prized possession of man. The present scenario is still that while a girl is groomed to become an efficient career woman as well as an efficient house maker, men are expected to excel mainly in professional fields. Men do not have to struggle hard to prove their worth, women most of the time has to work harder to prove not just that they are efficient but that they can work much harder and deliver the results. So Satya Bharti school Manihari (Pali) students tries though awareness rallies and street play that women of society considered an equal status as men. The movement towards gender equality.

We feel that there is a great need to change the mindsets of the community regarding status of women in society. We feel that women

must be given an equal status as men have. Equal educational & professional opportunities to be given to girls as boys have.

We are designed to raise awareness of an often under-addressed sphere of power dynamics between women and men. It ties into the broader theme -: Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all.Our efforts are based on household and family level inequality between men and women and the adverse impact such inequality have on all other spheres of women’s lives. Still women are following “parda Partha”. Let’s we talk, aware and sensitize people of village about this.

We started a rally from our school to village. We covered every street, where class V students do a role play on changing gender roles. Though street play and rally, the implications of unequal status at the family level are highlighted. They include poor health for women, violence against women, “Parda partha” for women and reduced participation of girls in education, which has a negative impact at all levels, from the scale of the individual to the family.

Students of Satya Bharti School, Manihari visited gram pancahayat, where they met with sarpanch of village and ward members and discuss the problem of inequality between men and women. During discussion they highlighted downfall in girl child enrolment in Village schools & less or reduced participation of womens in all sectors including gram sabha meetings etc.

Community members & village panchayat appreciated the efforts of Satya Bharti School Students. They ensured to give equal weightage to women & men in near future. As an immediate impact of the campaign, panchayat leaders included this initiative of SBS Manihari in their agenda of Gramsabha meeting.
