Independent vs. mainstream cinemas

Independent vs. mainstream cinemas

By Charlotte Ellis

Cinemas I will be looking at

The 10 cinemas that I will be looking at in this slide show are:

Odeon Cinema

Everyman Cinema

Vue Cinema

Prince Charles Cinema

Electric Cinema

Cineworld Cinema

Genesis Cinema

BFI London IMAX Cinema

Phoenix Cinema

Shortwave Cinema

Odeon cinema

The films listed that are showing at the Odeon Cinema are:

Kong: Skull Island

Logan

Moonlight

Fifty Shades Darker

Get Out

Beauty and the Beast

These films that are being shown range from action, to thriller, to romance but they are all big blockbuster films that have been greatly advertised by their companies.

This cinema would attract its target audience which would probably be families, because it is a very local cinema to Chelmsford where they only have 2 cinemas (and is more affordable out of the two). However this cinema only screens mainstream films, which is good for the cinema as all of the films being shown are popular, but smaller films are not necessarily appreciated.

Everyman cinema

The films listed that are shown at the Everyman Cinema are:

Kong: Skull Island

Viceroys House

Elle

Moonlight

Logan

The genre of films that are showing at this cinema range from action to drama and include more independent films than the previous cinema. This cinema is therefore more likely to attract the film lovers as the independent, artsy, films are being more appreciated and recognised. However this cinema is the more expensive one out of the two which are located in Chelmsford, which may turn more people to the Odeon. This may also attract some people because even though it is expensive, a good cinematic experience comes with it.

Vue cinema

The films listed that are showing at the Vue Cinema are:

Ghost in the Shell

A contemporary evening- Bolshoi 2017

Hidden Figures

Sing

Lion

Why Him?

The genre of films that are shown at this cinema range from action to comedy to drama- along with a ballet performance. More independent films are shown at this cinema which would attract the people who are passionate about films or just people who would prefer to see something a bit different compared to their regular cinema.

Prince Charles cinema

The films listed that are showing at the Prince Charles Cinema are:

Your Name

Manchester by the Sea

Headshot

The Princess Bride

La La Land

Trainspotting

The genre of film that are showed in this cinema range from anime, to drama to fantasy. Apart from La La Land, this cinema is only showing independent films which is different from big mainstream cinemas such as the Odeon. This attracts people who would rather see a more thought provoking film that does not have a typical storyline with a happy ending. This cinema is also the only one of its kind, making it very original so the audience would expect to see something out of the ordinary.

Electric cinema

The films listed that are shown at the Electric Cinema:

20th Century Women

A Quiet Passion

Beauty and the Beast

Denial

Christine

Elle

Free Fire

All of these films have different genres and are all (apart from Beauty and the Beast) independent films. This gives the cinema originality as the films that are being shown are not often heard of which, after watching, may make the audience think and possibly have a different outlook on certain topics of situations. People may also be attracted to go to this cinema because it is sophisticated and old fashioned on the inside which would give the audience the full cinematic experience.

Cineworld cinema

The films listed that are shown at Cineworld Cinema:

Lion

Fast&Furious 8

Beauty and the Beast

Viceroys House

Moonlight

Logan

All of the films that are shown at this cinema are very similar to the ones at other mainstream cinemas such as the Odeon with mainly blockbuster films with famous actors/actress in them that have big budgets. The screening of mainstream films gives a guarantee for families or friends to go and watch the films because they are usually part of a remake, a series of films or include a good cast. This cinema is a chain and has many cinemas planted around the country.

Genesis cinema

The films listed are shown at Genesis Cinema:

Kong: Skull Island

Logan

The Lego Batman Movie

Hidden Figures

Moonlight

A Clockwork Orange

The films shown at this cinema range from a genre of action to drama. These films that are listed are big blockbuster films that have had a lot of advertising for such as trailers, which is why they are so popular and are screening at most of the big cinemas. This cinema does also claim to screen independent films aswell as mainstream and had been renovated from a 19th century building which makes it unique and exciting to go to for an audience visiting for the first time especially.

Bfi southbank cinema

The films listed are being shown at the BFI Southbank Cinema:

Moonlight

Certain Women

Elle

Their Finest

Fear Eats the Soul

One Flew Over the Cukoos Nest

The films that are being screened at this cinema include a wide range of topics as they are all independent films with a mixture of new and old releases. By doing this, the cinema is able to keep a wide range of audiences as the older generation will want to see the older films and persuade younger family members to see it too, and vice versa. This differs from mainstream cinemas that tend to just screen new films to attract the younger generation.

Phoenix cinema

The films listed are being shown at the Phoenix Cinema:

Elle

Certain Women

A Simple Life

Personal Shopper

The Salesman

Botticelli Inferno

This cinema shows only independent films in order to help the directors get recognition for such artistic and thought provoking films. It is an independent single screen community cinema in East Finchley, London amd was founded in 1910 and opened in 1912 as East Finchley Picturedrome. This cinema would be appealing to people who are passionate about films or media in general and want to watch a film out of the orfinary, away from the big budget blockbuster films. The authenticity and love for film artistry would also be another reason for attracting customers as even the building itself is unique.

Shortwave cinema

The films listed are being shown at the Shortwave Cinema:

Logan

Viceroys House

Beauty and the Beast

Shortwave is a 52 seat independent cinema and cafe bar based in Bermondsey, showing only 3 films as it is very small. This cinema is unique and would attract customers as it has a cafe bar, and shows arthouse, classic and indie films. This cinema is for people who are bored of the big fancy cinemas and feel like going somewhere more intimate to see their film and have a drink.
