Explanatory Note
SCOPE
1. This index, prepared by the Documentation ServicesDivision of the Dag Hammarskjold Library at United NationsHeadquarters, is intended to offer a bibliographical guide tothe proceedings and documentation of the thirty-third yearof the Security CounCIl and of Its commIttees or ad hoccommittees that met durmg the year. ---
ARRANGEMENT
2. The lIldex consists of the following parts:
(a) Introduction, includlllg list of the Presidents andchecklists of meetings of the Secunty Council and its committees.
(b) Agenda, with reference to the relevant subjectheadings used in part (c).
(c) Subject index. Subjects are arranged alpha-betically, with reference to the documentation, discussionand disposition of each ltem.
(d) Index to speeches. Speeches and statements byrepresentatives are listed in alphabetical order by countryor organlzation, subdlvided by SUbject discussed and byname of speaker, with an indicatlOn of the meeting at whichthe speech wag made. Statements by Presidents of theCounCIl are hsted und3r Security Council: PreSIdents.Statements and speeches made by private mdivIdualsrepresenting an organlzation to which a hearing wasgranted are listed under the name of the organization.Statements made by ofhcers of the United Nations Secretanat are listed under the name of the office or departmentthey represented.

AVAILABILITY OF DOCUMENTS
3. All verbatim records of meetings of the SecurityCouncil appear first in provisional mimeographed form.They may be identified by their symbol, which consists ofthe series symbol, S/PV. -, followed by a number corresponding to that of the meeting, e. g., S/PV. 2056 (see introduction, under "Checklist of meetlllgs"). Verbatirnrecordsof meetings are later prlllted as separate fascicles in theOffiCial Records.
All documents of the Security Council are first issuedIII mlmeographed form. A selected number of them aresubsequently printed in the Supplements to the OfficialRecords, where they are arranged chronologically in fascicles' each fascicle covering a quarterly period. Some special reports are issued lIldlvidually as numbered SpecialSupplements. Resolutions adopted by the Security Council,first issued in mimeographed form, are later collected,along with decisions taken, in a separate volume of theOfficial Records of the year. After thelr republicatlOn inthe Ofhcial Records, the provislOnal mimeographed documents are no longer available.

1, The Council's practice is to adopt at each meeting, onthe basis of a provisional agenda circulated in advance, theagenda for that particular meeting. At subsequent meetingsan item may appear in its original form or with the additionof such sub-items as the Council may decide to include. Anitem once includedin the agenda thereafter remains on thelist of matters of which the Council is seized, until theCouncil agrees to its removal.
