on Integrating Renewable Energy Sources, Micro-Grids and Energy Storage as part of Smart

Grid Coordination Committee. In June 2013, he was nominated as member of national

taskforce for integration of renewable energy sources by Central Electricity Authority &

Ministry of Power in India. In May 2014, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy of India

(MNRE) nominated him on the standing committee for energy storage and hybrids.

Rahul holds a Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. He

holds Masters in Energy Management from New York Institute of Technology.

Energy Storage – Scale of Manufacturing

    • LEAD ACID battery leads theenergy storage market inproduction and sales

    • LITHIUM ION batteries arecurrently being manufacturedin the GW scale (portable, transportation and grid

    storage)• FLOW BATTERIES are currently

being manufactured on a MWscale. Production is likely toscale up significantly in thenext 5 years

Energy storage technologies arein early stages of achieving

economies of scale. As the costs

    come down, markets will expand,

    thus providing more

    opportunities to scale up.

    Villages in India

    12

As stated in Office Memorandum subject DDUGJY (2014), there were around 1,001,506 villagesover 100 population and 74,157 villages or inhabitations with less than 100 population on 31st of Dec, 2012.

Total census villages withabove 100 population

    •   Most of the villages accounted

    in census will be electrified

    through grid supply. However,

the rural India witness power outages over 10 hours in many

    parts of India. Such villages

are already relying on DG sets

    and lead acid battery back-up.

    •   It is estimated that over

    2,00,000 habitations will be

electrified by off-grid solutionsand over 20% of these

    habitations might be electrified

    with micro-grids.

    Rural Electrification and Microgrid (continued)

    13

It is observed that over 90% of electrification of villages or

inhabitations have been done through grid expansion under RGGVY

(now DDUGY). And the rest of the villages or inhabitations have been

    electrified through off-grid solutions.

Microgrid is practically the best option to electrified a rural

inhabitation of under 100 households or a village or inhabitation

located in a remote locality where physically it is almost impossible to

take the grid supply. However, due to various challenges in

maintaining of microgrids, individual household electrification through

solar panels of under 40 W are deployed over each households with

couple of under 2W LEDs and a mobile charger.

    Roof-top PV Drivers

In most parts of India, clear sunny weather is experienced 250 to 300 days in a year. Theequivalent energy potential is about 5,000 trillion kWh per year

    17

    •   India will likely see a record growth in the rooftop solar PV segment. The key market drivers are:

government incentives, mandatory rooftop solar policies at the state level and the rising power tariffs.

    •   The rooftop solar market is still at an early stage with many participants and an exciting dynamic.

    •   Total installed capacity in the residential segment is 112 MW or 40% of the total market, But this market

is highly fragmented and dominated by local companies.

    Roof-top PV

Battery is an essential part in the design of roof-top solar PV system. Small power rating andlonger life of the battery is the key parameter for this application.

There is a huge scope for

    this market, where batteries

can be used for rooftop PV

integration. With currentprice point and technology
