West North East South 1NT Pass 2S Pass 3C All Pass South could have asked stayman over partner’s NT and if hearts are denied then could have bid 3C but there was no systematic way to stop in 3C, so rather than asking majors, he transferred to clubs by bidding 2S. 3C made with an overtrick.

Closed Room: West North East South 1C(*) 1H(**) Pass 1S Pass Pass 2C Pass Pass 2D 2H 2S 3H Pass 4H All Pass

1C was Precision Club and East’s 1H was transfer to spades. Systematically South should have doubled showing 5-8 HCPs, but once he passed and West bid 1S, North simply passed and now when South bid 2C, North passed, considering that partner can have very few points. This would have become the final contract, if East do not interfere but once East bid 2D, South got the chance to show his major suit and then there was no stopping for NS to reach 4H. West led the DA, declarer playing the DQ and then shifted to spade, which was won by East. He could have cashed another spade but instead played the DK, which got ruffed and now declarer after taking out the trumps was able to discard his losing spade on DJ and claim the contract with an overtrick to gain 8 IMPs for India.

Board 2 was a flat board, both NS playing in 4S for no swing.

After West’s 1NT opening, it was quite tempting for East to think of a possible slam. In open room, they stopped in 3NT, whereas in closed room they stopped at 4NT quantitative. When the CJ came down in 2nd round, ther were top 12tricks with 2 spades, 2 hearts and 4 tricks each in minor suit.

In open room, after East’s pre-emptive bid, South could not bid as it would be forcing. The contract went 2 down for -200. In closed room, South had the same problem as 3C would have been forcing. But he took a courageous bid of 4C over 3D. Lead was a diamond and East after winning the first trick shifted to heart, won by declarer with Ace. When the CK was caught, declarer was able to score 12 tricks. But that was 1 IMP gain to Bangladesh.

In the closed room, NS bid sensibly to reach the optimum contract of 5C, though 3NT was also safe and on any lead minimum 10 tricks were guaranteed. However there was a big confusion in the open room, when the bidding went as follows:

Closed Room: West North East South 1D Pass 1S Pass 1NT Pass 2D(*) Pass 3D Pass 4C Pass 4D Pass 4S Pass 5D Pass 6C Pass 6D ALL Pass It looks 2D by South was some sort of forcing bid but afterwards the bidding sequence was not at all clear. They bid so strongly that East stacked with Diamonds did not try to double in the fear of them going to 6NT. The contract went 5 down and India gained a whopping 15 IMPs on the board.

On board 7, both the rooms were in 6NT and the lead at both the table was HJ. In open room, things were made easy for West, when South discarded a club on the 4th diamond, giving 4 tricks in club suit for an easy 12 tricks. In closed room, though South did not help but East took correct view to catch the SQ for his 12 tricks for no swing on the board.

On West’s 3S, East bid 3NT confirming checks in spades but as South had opened a spade, it was difficult for EW to play in the opponent suit.

With one loser each in Heart & Clubs, once the diamond did not break the contract went one down for +100 to Bangladesh.

Closed Room:

West North East South Pass 2C DBL 2H 2S Pass 4S Pass Pass DBL All Pass In the closed room, South opened a precision 2C and EW not knowing the spade break were happy to play in their 4-4 fit. South with 5-carder spades duly doubled it.

South led the HA and the CA and North played C10 (no interest) then continued with the H9, which was ruffed in dummy. He tried to cash the DA but it was ruffed by South. The low club return was won in hand with 9 and HJ ruffed with SQ and trumps cashed. Now the loser heart went on the diamond Q and the doubled contract got made for 13 IMPs gain to Bangladesh.

In the closed room, the bidding was:

West North East South 1D Pass 1H 1S 3C 3S 4C Pass 4D Pass 4H Pass 4S Pass 5C All Pass There were 2 losers but lacking entries the diamonds are to be played correctly. You can enter with CQ to play the diamond once, but when South ducks, you have to take out trumps and play the DQ to pin the DJ. Another play can be just play a low diamond from dummy after winning the King and if South plays the DA, you are again through. But if he plays low, the trick is won by Jack. Now another spade play forces East to ruff and now if you take out trump, you will have to lose the DA. . Hence you play another diamond hoping to ruff with 9 but it gets over-ruffed by 10 to go one down. This is what exactly happened on the table. In open room after ruffing the spade, declarer played DK, which was ducked. Now he played a small diamond, which was won by South and the diamond return was ruffed by CQ to make the contract. In closed room declarer after ruffing spade went to West hand with Queen and played a diamond to King, which was ducked. Now he plays a low diamond and South did well to duck it and the trick was won by North with Jack and another spade returned. Declarer now has to play a top trump to get rid of West’s C10. When instead he played another diamond and ruffed with C9, North could win the all important trick with C10 to defeat the contract. That was 10 IMPs loss to Bangladesh. On the last 2 boards, there was no exchange of IMPs and INDIA won the match by 37-25.

DEFENSIVE TECHNIQUES IN BRIDGE PLAYING Examples Compiled and presented by Mazhar Jafri

EXAMPLE 5: Disrupting declarer’s communication

9 2 A J T 7 4 8 7 6 7 5 2

T 5 3 Q 5 2 J T 9 5 2 J 8

Vul: None, Lead: J

West North East South 2C Pass 2D Pass 2NT Pass 3D Pass 3H Pass 3NT All Pass

Bidding details: 2 is waiting, 2NT shows 22-23, 3 is a transfer to hearts

West leads the diamond jack; South wins with the ace in hand and plays a heart. What do we do now? SOLUTION Whatever the hcp distribution reveals in this case, one should focus on a very important piece of information obtained from South’s bidding – he has a doubleton in hearts; therefore, West must play queen. Following low will give declarer at least one extra trick (or many more, if partner is not alert enough to duck).

Full hand

9 2 A J T 7 4 8 7 6 7 5 2

T 5 3 Q 5 2 J T 9 5 2 J 8

Q J 7 4 K 9 8 3 Q T 9 4 3

A K 8 6 6 3 A K Q 4 A K 6

Playing the queen of hearts will give defenders two tricks in the suit, since declarer will have to rely on his only remaining chance: both king and queen in West hand. Therefore, he will duck and repeat the fitness later.
