Care for a hundred – that’s Nursing! It is my privilege to be among all those amazing nurses who have thrived in their profession by doing their duties with utmost passion and patience. Their knowledge and experience and truly made a difference in people’s lives. Words are not enough to describe the uniqueness of this profession. However, we should not forget “The Lady with the Lamp”, who took up this noble task as God’s calling and turned it into a profession which has become the backbone of healthcare today. I take great pride in celebrating the birthday of Florence Nightingale as the Nurse’s Day! In order to commemorate her contributions, I wish to highlight a few important principles and developments in the field of nursing today. Florence Nightingale gave the concept of “advocacy” for the patients. This concept is listed in ‘American Nurses Association’ as an integral component of patient safety. Nurses are seen as ‘patient advocates’ both when working to achieve desired patient outcomes and when patients are unable or unwilling to advocate for themselves. She emphasized that nurses should care for individuals irrespective of their religion or their social status. She welcomed the mentally ill patients and treated them with care and respect they deserved. She was the proponent of nursing education. In order to meet the growing needs of healthcare outside hospitals, Military Nursing, Public Health Nursing and Nurse Midwifery were some of the fields of nursing which are thriving today. Along with delivering quality care for patients Ms. Nightingale also included their right to peaceful death. In short, she has touched on all facets of Nursing. Her tireless work has served as an example for each one of us who have taken this profession. I am sure there are a lot of us who are making their way into nursing! To all those newcomers, please take some time to read about Ms. Nightingale’s life and work. One phrase that would sum it all is, “Service to Mankind is Service to God!” I attribute my success to this - I never gave or took any excuse.” Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910)

Dear IANANT family,

“HAPPY NURSES DAY TO ALL!!” Care for one - that’s love!

One phrase that would sum it all is, “Service to Mankind is Service to God!”
