SENIOR NIGHTSenior captains Juli Pierce and Erica Short will bid farewell to Hoosier fans Saturday night, playing their last match inside University Gym. Each of them leaves Bloomington as one of the greatest players in program history and can both be found atop a career statistical category in the IU record books. Pierce’s 1,479 digs are the most ever for a career in IU history while Short’s career kill total of 1,826 is also the top mark of all-time.

Pierce also owns the record for most digs in a single season when she dug 481 balls in 2007. Not to be out-done, Short is just 65 kills away from also snagging an all-time single-season mark. Her 491 put-aways thus far in ‘08 are closing in on the season kills record.

Quick hits about the IU Seniors...

DOUBLE RECORD WATCHAshley Benson is quickly stamping her name into the IU record books with her superb blocking skills. Benson, who has 152 blocks thus far in 2008, needs four more rejections to surpass Mandy Eberle (2005) for the most blocks in a single season. Benson set the freshman single-season record a year ago with 140 stuffs.

Caitlin Cox is closing in on a frosh record of her own, just 24 digs away from claiming the top spot on the all-time freshman digs list.

YES, THE BIG TEN REALLY IS THAT GOODThe Big Ten has been well represented in the AVCA National Poll all season long with at least five member schools ranked in the top-25 since the start. However, the dominance of the conferfence is exemplified when looking at the latest NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). The RPI is the computer formula-generated rankings that the NCAA selection committee relies heavily on for determing tournament at-large bigs and seeding.

The most recent RPI rankings were released on Nov. 9, and the Big Ten occupies four of the top seven slots in the national ratings (Penn State, 1st; Minnesota, 4th; Illinois, 6th; Purdue, 7th). In addition, Michigan comes in at No. 22 while the Hoosiers are ranked 31st nationally, according to the RPI.

The top-25 in the AVCA poll can be found on page three while the complete top-40 for the RPI is available on page five of these match notes.

MONUMENTAL WINSIndiana’s win over then-No. 13 Minnesota on Nov. 1 was the Hoosiers’ second victory over a ranked opponent this season after also defeating then-No. 21 Wisconsin two weeks earlier.

•Itmarksthefirsttimesince2002thatIndianahas defeated two ranked conference opponents in the same season.•Minnesota is thehighestrankedopponent IUhas beaten since taking out No. 11 Ohio State on Sept. 25, 2002.

ON A GOOD PACEWith four regular season matches remaining, several all-time school records are in danger of being broken. If the following Hoosiers can maintain their current statistical pace, they would find themselves in next season’s media guide and the single-season top ten lists: Short with 561 kills (1st), Benson with 174 blocks (1st), and a .301 hitting efficiency (7th) and Caitlin Cox with 406 digs (4th).

BIG TIMING IN THE BIG TENCaitlin Cox has picked up her game since the Big Ten season got underway. In 16 matches against conference foes, Cox is averaging 3.94 digs per set. That pace ranks as the sixth highest in conference matches only. Cox can be found in the service aces top-ten as well, racking up 16 aces thus far in the Big Ten schedule, good for fourth in the league (tied with teammate Hayley Koetter who also has 16 aces as well in Big Ten play).

BLOCK YOUR SOCKS OFFFor the season, Ashley Benson’s 1.42 blocks per set are the fifth-best rate in the Big Ten and rank 14th nationally. As a team, the Hoosiers’ 2.56 blocks/set are the fourth highest total in the conference and crack the top-30 in Division-I volleyball, coming in at 29th.

Indiana’s sweep of San Francisco earlier this season is arguably the best three-set blocking effort in school history. The school record for most blocks in a three-set match is 15 set back in 1996. However, the 14 rejections against USF were tallied in the new 25-point set era rather than the old 30-points per set format played in previous seasons.

SERIAL KILLERErica Short is second in the conference with her 4.59 kills per set pace and sits at eighth in the national rankings. She has collected double-digit dig totals in 25 of 28 matches this season, including 10 performances with 20+ kills.

AVCA NATIONAL POLL (11/17) LENDING A HELPING HANDSetting up most of those kills is the duo of Mary Chaudoin and Hayley Koetter. Chaudoin averages 5.79 assists per set while Koetter chips in 5.37 helpers. Indiana’s 12.43 team assists/set rank 57th nationally.

BENSON IS EFFICIENTSophomore Ashley Benson is also making her case to be placed in the IU record books with her .289 career hitting efficiency. Sixty matches into her Hoosier career, Benson has connected on 590 kills on 1,380 attempts with 196 errors. The Bloomington North High School product currently owns the second-best career hitting percentage in school history, just .001 percentage points behind Diane Horeth (1989-90) and her .290 hitting efficiency.

YOU GOT SERVEDHayley Koetter has a team-high 27 aces on the year. Her .25 aces per set are the fifth highest pace in the Big Ten. Koetter connected on at least one service ace in four straight matches earlier this season, including a five-ace showing against Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 13). Those five aces placed Koetter into the IU record books with the second most aces ever in a three-set match.

BENSON WINS AGAIN!Ashley Benson earned the Big Ten Player of the Week award once again on Nov. 4, her second straight such award. It marks Indiana’s third weekly conference honor as Erica Short also nabbed the Player of the Week honors earlier this season.Benson led the Hoosiers to a pair of wins over the weekend, including a 3-2 victory over No. 13 Minnesota on Saturday. The sophomore averaged 4.0 kills per set on a .354 hitting percentage with 1.1 blocks and 0.6 digs per set over two matches.

BIG TEN RANKINGS (Top 10)Opening the weekend against Iowa on Friday, Benson tallied a career-high 25 kills on .477 hitting with a service ace and four total blocks in the come-from-behind victory. Against the nationally ranked Golden Gophers on Saturday, the Bloomington, Ind., native put down 15 kills with seven total blocks and five digs.

BENSON’S PLAY DOES NOT GO UNRECOGNIZEDThe Big Ten Conference named Ashley Benson as the Player of the Week on Oct. 27. She also garnered national recognition when Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) named her their National Player of the Week.

Benson led the Hoosiers to two wins, hitting .412 with 4.1 kills per set as Indiana downed Northwestern and Wisconsin. The sophomore also contributed on defense, adding 1.9 blocks and 1.1 digs per frame. Against the Wildcats, Benson put down 23 kills in the five-set match, hitting at a .455 clip. She also tacked on nine total blocks and eight digs in the victory. At Wisconsin, the Bloomington, Ind., native tallied 14 kills at a .333 average with a pair of digs and eight blocks as Indiana beat the Badgers in Madison for the first time since 1995.

MARATHON MATCHAs if last a 29-27 fourth set win versus Ohio State wasn’t long enough, the Hoosiers had to work overtime once again the following night against Michigan. After two very tight sets to open the match, the third frame extended all the way to the 38-36 final score. There was a total of 14 unsuccessful set-point attempts. Indiana staved off five match-points while the Wolverines fended off nine set points.

It marked the longest set for IU since Sept. 3, 2005 when the Cream and Crimson came away with a 39-37 win over Loyola-Chicago. The 13 “extra” points needed by Michigan to corral the victory are the most in an IU match since the change was made to rally scoring in 2001.

The Hoosiers then made it three consecutive maches with atleast one set going “extras,” when they dropped a 27-29 third-set decision to Northwestern the following weekend.

HOOSIER HYSTERIAIndiana Volleyball ignited a crowd of over 8,000 with a 3-1 win over Ohio State, kicking off the Hoosier Hysteria festivities with a bang.

It was a complete team effort inside Assembly Hall as five different Hoosiers recorded nine or more kills and six individuals posted nine or more digs. Erica Short’s 16 kills paced the Hoosiers and Caitlin Cox’s 15 digs were tops on the team. Lexie Woodson tallied nine kills, a .412 hitting efficiency and four blocks on the night.

DYNAMIC DUO DOES IT AGAINAshley Benson and Erica Short both nabbed all-tournament laurels for the third consecutive weekend at the TIS Bookstore Invitational after being named to the All-adidas Classic and All-UK Invitational teams the two previous weekends.

IU TAKES ADIDAS CLASSIC TITLEWith a 3-0 sweep over San Francisco in their last match out in Long Beach and a pair of sweeps to open the adidas Classic, the Cream and Crimson entered last Saturday’s contest having won nine straight sets. Indiana then extended that streak to 11 by taking the first two sets versus Louisville. The Cardinals were able to pull even at two sets apiece before Indiana sealed the deal in a 15-12 fifth-set thriller inside Assembly Hall.

Erica Short and Juli Pierce both made the all-tournament squad, in addition to, Ashley Benson. Short was named tournament MVP after racking up 61 kills, eight blocks and 26 digs in the event. Pierce paced the Hoosiers with 49 digs while Benson’s 11 blocks and .420 hitting efficiency (39-5-81) were tops on the team.

“BIG E” BREAKS BIG RECORDSenior Erica Short began the adidas Classic with a record-breaking performance, putting down 24 kills against Valparaiso to mark the highest total ever by a Hoosier in a three-set match. Short’s 24th kill not only surpassed the previous record by Anne Eastman (Nov. 11, 1994), but also clinched the IU win as the final point of the match. Even more impressive is the fact that Short racked up her 24 kills in the new 25-point sets rather than the 30-point or non-rally 15-point scoring format that was previously used in NCAA matches.

For the entire weekend, Short paced Indiana with 61 total kills (5.5 kps) to go along with a .292 hitting percentage, eight blocks (0.7 bps) and 26 digs (2.4 dps), earning her the Big Ten Player of the Week award.

FIGHT FOR 12The Indiana Volleyball team has one main goal for 2008: “Fight for 12” signifies the next step for the IU Volleyball program, which is to compete in the NCAA Tournament in December (12).

O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAINSeniors Juli Pierce and Erica Short were voted as team captains for 2008 by their teammates. It is Pierce’s second tenure as team captain after serving in that role last year.

SPEAKING OF JULI PIERCE...Pierce had been listed as a senior all of 2007 due to her pending graduation in May. However, she decided to return for her fourth and final year of eligibility this season while attending graduate school. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Sports Marketing and Management.

NEW FACE IN A NEW PLACETransfers Melany Rarey and Hayley Koetter each bring NCAA Tournament experience to the Hoosiers, entering the season as a junior and sophomore, respectively.

Rarey played two seasons at Michigan State, including the Spartans’ 2006 NCAA-qualifying season. Koetter played in all 36 matches as a freshman at Western Kentucky. She was a member of the Sun Belt Conference’s first team to ever earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

MY TWO DADSAshley Benson and Lexie Woodson come from the lineage of their fathers, both of whom are IU Hall of Fame basketball players. Kent Benson and Mike Woodson were each All-Americans, Big Ten Player of the Years and 1,000 point scorers during their time donning the Cream and Crimson. Benson led the 1975-76 Hoosier basketball squad to a perfect 32-0 national championship run. Woodson is currently the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks.
