A WORD FROM DIANE . . .

2

I thanked God for you all today. That’s not unusual, of course; I thank God for you all the time. But this morning I was suddenly struck by the beauty of your amazing strength. In this time of enervating grief and loss all our ministries are still going strong, thanks to your faithfulness.

In about two minutes I made a long list of ways you bless each other and the world around us — even in the midst of difficulty. Our preschool program is stronger

than it’s been any time in the last five years. As I write this I’m enjoying the happy noise of children on the playground who are participants at preschool’s summer camp, led by Liz Young even though she is one who is personally grieving a great loss. Our Building Committee led by Tom Cain continues to faithfully work through the issue of how to reconcile our dreams and our reality. They are thoughtfully crafting a new plan in conversation with our Stewardship Committee, led by Chris Coble, to present to you. It’s never easy to “go back to the drawing board” when you find you can’t do what you’d hoped but without missing a beat that is what this group did and is doing. Thanks to your deep generosity we now have a new HVAC system up and running in the sanctuary — something we will all be grateful for all summer long. Bob Spargur, Dave Stansifer, Bob Burrows and others were on the spot each day representing us as it was installed. Our Christian Ed/Faith Formation team along with Pastor Doug have done a tremendous job of planning for summer education and formation events. We thank co-chairs Kim Burgess and Cathy Wilson for their work, and Doug for leading our Summer Vespers. If you didn’t get to come last Sunday evening do make an effort to come next time — it’s good. Don Burrell and Toni Medlen are behind the scenes in many ways supporting our fellowship and membership events including making plans for our all-church picnic and re-staffing the Coffee Café for summer and beyond. The work of our Outreach team, led by Dave and Jean Tatum and Janettte Smith continues with a recent Trunks of Treasure sale, an upcoming SAWs ramp build, and promoting signs of welcome for all. There’s more and for it all I thank you! It is a blessing to serve with you.

Peace & Grace, Diane

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Adult and youth volunteers are needed to help at General

Assembly with the Communion, Offering, and Diaconate activities.

There will be three Worship Services in which communion will be served; Saturday, Monday and Wednesday. Additional folks will be needed for greeting and other

duties.

Contact Jim Holzman at [email protected] if you

are able to volunteer or have questions.

Summer Sundays for Children—Volunteers Needed

Do you love kids? Want to be a part of their faith formation? If so, we may have just the right thing for you! We are currently seeking volunteers to help lead Sunday School for our children throughout the Summer months. Our hope is that for the Summer, those who have taken on Sunday School leadership throughout the school year can take a break, while new persons can try out leading a class or two. The curriculum is all prepared and minimal preparation is required. A sign-up trifold and more information about the age groups is available in the Narthex. Thank you in advance for your help!

3

We had a successful first week of Summer Vespers! The adults enjoyed a presentation on Global Ministries and the Palestine/Israel conflict while the children learned about children living in modern day Cana, received henna tattoos, and learned the “Dabke” Dance! Join us this Sunday for a presentation on media portrayal of the Middle East with Sarah Riester and welcome banner making for the kids! All are welcome! The event is from 5:16-7:30 pm each Sunday this month. See you there!

Mission Trip Deadline

This year, we’ll be participating in the Indianapolis Pride Festival along with other area Disciples congregations and the denomination. The organizers are currently seeking volunteers to attend the booth, which will be open from 12pm-11pm this Saturday (June 10

th) at Military Park. There, volunteers will

hand out information about area Disciples churches and be a welcoming presence. We will also be marching in the parade earlier that morning. If you’re interested in marching, please meet at Central Christian Church at 9:30 this Saturday. A sign making party will be held here at the church at 6pm on Friday, June 9

th.

Indianapolis Pride Festival

This is a friendly reminder that all youth going to New Orleans need to pay their portion of the cost by Friday, June 16

th. The cost is $150.00 per person.

Those who need additional assistance are encouraged to contact Doug as soon as possible.

Symphony on the Prairie Tickets

Membership will begin selling tickets this Sunday, June 11, for the low price of $18. There will be a table in the Family Room near the Spirit Wear display and they will be selling tickets from 10:30 to 11:15. We plan to offer these tickets every Sunday, at least for the next four weeks or until they are gone. These tickets are good for any single performance this summer and are less than the price at Kroger Stores, which generally are only good for the next performance. We also announce a special night of Friday July 14, when we encourage all to buy a ticket and meet up at Conner Prairie. The ISO will be performing. We will have an area roped off for the friends from ACC so we all can sit together. The Music of John WiIliams will be featured. He is most known for the music of Star Wars so this will be an evening that children and adults can enjoy. All are welcome.

Our next luncheon is coming up on Wednesday, June 14th and it will be at Champps Restaurant, 8711 N River Rd, which is located just east of Keystone at the Crossing. We plan to eat at 11:30. Jerry and Sandy Zimmerman are the coordinators and need to have a final count by next Mon 6/12, so please email at [email protected] or call 317-581-9975. If you want to car pool from church, please indicate when you make your reservation. We welcome everyone that can spare a little extra time on a Wednesday for a super lunch and an opportunity to fellowship with some great folks. Champps offers many great food choices.

Spirit Wear

The ACC Book Club will read The House at Riverton by Kate Morton for our meeting on June 27th at 7:00 pm. The House at Riverton is a gorgeous novel set in England between the wars. It is the story of an aristocratic family, a house, a mysterious death and a way of life that vanished forever, told in a flashback by a woman who witnessed it all and kept a secret for

decades. All are welcome to join us!

Membership will have tables in the Family Room on this Sunday, June 11 to sell the many colors of tee shirts and polo shirts featuring the ACC logo. If you come to second service, please come a few minutes early as we will be open 10:30 to 11:15.. We continue to thank all of the church family that proudly advertise to our community about the great church that we attend. A shirt might make a great gift for dad.

We have great news to share—the special appeal for the building upkeep has reached its goal! A big thank you to everyone for your help in moving this effort forward!

Thank you for your generosity in support of Special Day Offerings

As part of our outreach giving at Allisonville, there are 4 Disciples Mission Fund Special Day Offerings that benefit the general church that we receive throughout the year; Easter, Pentecost, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. We also receive offerings for Week of Compassion and Reconciliation. So far in 2017, we have received the following – for Week of Compassion, the relief, refugee, and development fund of the general church - $4,565.00; and the Easter offering, supporting the General Ministries of the church - $2,772.00. We will receive offerings for Pentecost the first two weeks in June. The Pentecost offering supports the specialized ministry of new church development through both regional and general programs. Thank you one and all for your support of all of these ministries! We will continue to keep you aware of these offerings throughout the year. –ACC Stewardship Ministry Team

We seem to be missing a 2’ x 4’ white plastic folding table that was purchased for use by the Sunday morning Café. If you have taken it home, please return in to the church. Thank you!

The weekly yoga class at ACC will take a break for the summer and resume in the fall. We will let you know the date that we plan to resume and we hope you will consider joining us!

BLOOD DRIVE SHALOM ZONE NEWS

SAWs Handicap Ramp Build Saturday, June 24th 8 am—12 pm Location—To Be Announced

Shalom Zone is partnering with Servants at Work, a nonprofit 501c3, to build a handicap ramp. No carpentry skills are required!

Join participants from the other 4 churches within the Shalom Zone to provide persons with disabilities and conditions of aging the freedom to remain in their homes and reconnect with their communities.

If interested please complete the registration online at www.sawsramps.org. Click on the Volunteer tab to complete the registration. Then contact Dave Tatum at [email protected] to participate.

The Blood Mobile will be at ACC this Sunday, June 11th from 9:15—noon for a blood drive. Talk to Curt McCollister if you would like to sign up to donate.

Because there were so many people who either donated food, helped set up, or helped clean up for Marcea Young’s funeral, it seemed overwhelming to send thank-you emails to everyone. So please, consider this your “thank you.” Your generosity was simply amazing. I didn’t even need to ask for help—I had so many volunteers! We served approximately 120 people.

Marcea was our “hostess extraordinare,” and she left quite a legacy. I know she would have been so pleased.

Toni Medlen, Marilyn Barnett, and I will continue as funeral dinner coordinators. This is an important ministry and is so appreciated by the families we serve.

We wanted to express our appreciation for all of the prayers, cards, food, and support during Marcea’s illness and death. A big thank you to Diane, Joyce, and Doug for your visits. We also wanted to express our appreciate to the Choir for your participation in Marcea’s funeral. As always, you sounded great and many of our friends from out of town commented how blessed we are to have a choir that is so good. Sincerely,

Phil Young Jeff, Liz, Charlie & Maggie Young Jelaine, Ben, Rhea, & Anne Marie Sparrow

THANK YOU ACC FAMILY AND CHOIR

THANK YOU TO DWM

Disciples Women Ministry, Thank you for the beautiful funeral luncheon you provided after mom’s service on Saturday, May 20th. The food was delicious and the decorations were elegant. Also, thank you for your help on Friday night with the visitation provisions. Many times people don’t stop to acknowledge work being completed behind the scenes but we totally know that many hands and much time were involved in the funeral weekend. We are grateful! Many funeral guests verbalized witnessing Christ through what you all did and for that I want to congratulate you. Blessings to you all! Jelaine, Jeff, Phil, and family

AN UPDATE ON THE KALALA FAMILY

7

Current Needs: Preschool drivers for the two little girls on Monday, Wednesday,

and Friday beginning in August Contributions to the ACC Preschool to help cover the costs of

tuition and summer camp. Car seats for Mary and Vicky: the old ones either are really worn

out from transferring them to different cars or don’t fit. Backpack for Vicky Help taking Kapi shopping during the week between 12:30 and

2:30 on days the kids are at camp or in school. Help with driving lessons for Kapi School Uniforms for Danny and Eden School Supplies for Danny and Eden Food for the family – food stamps have been cut back drastically Pull-ups for Mary and Good Nites for Eden Transportation for Kapi and kids to church on Sunday Morning – the number of kids will depend on

car availability. Sizes for kids: Danny - 6; Eden – 5; Mary – 4; Vicky – 3

The Family – The family’s next and most important step is to get their green cards. This will cement their presence in the US and give them access to better jobs and more financial stability. The family’s scooter was recently stolen but recovered. It has sustained some damage and Dave Tatum is working on getting it repaired so that Kapi can ride it to work. Prince – If you haven’t seen the family in church on Sundays, it’s because of Prince’s work schedule. He works five days a week from 2 pm until 1 or 2 in the morning at Henry Schein. Then he is up at 5 am helping to get all four kids ready so that they can take Kapi to work by 7 am. He spends much of his free time sleeping to catch up. Kapi would really like to bring the kids to church but is dependent on Prince for transportation until she gets her driver’s license.

Kapi – Kapi is impatient to get her GED and eventually become a nurse. She is working part time five days a week, also at Henry Schein.

Danny - Danny has been accepted at IPS 70 – School for Inquiry – a magnet school. Because of his acceptance, his brother and sisters will be able to attend there also. His last day of Kindergarten is June 8.

Eden – Eden is going on to Kindergarten at School 70. He was a hit at ACC Preschool and will be sorely missed by his teachers there.

Mary – Mary is a bright, outgoing little girl who has entered the terrible 3’s. Her favorite word is no. She will be moving up in Allisonville Preschool.

Vicky – Believe it or not, little Miss Vicky will be attending ACC preschool three days a week. We have so many people to thank for helping this family. Primarily: Liz Young and the ACC preschool teachers, Carol Holzman, Gary Hume, Mindy Armstrong, Sue and Herb Feltner, Jean and Dave Tatum, and so many others: our diaper fairy, folks who show up with clothes and food. Our church has given much to this family, but we have been so blessed along the way. Repectfully Submitted, Kathie Meyer (on behalf of the Kalala Family) 317-402-7437 or [email protected]
