A Message from the President

0————1

Architects across Indiana are doing amazing work. We’re changing the City’s landscape, giving life to historic buildings, designing dreamy homes, planning safer schools, and creating a sustainable future for those to follow. All great stuff – yet, we don’t really talk about it much. In my 30-year stretch as an Architect/AIA Member, I realize now more than ever that we do have something to talk about! As your 2019 AIA IndianapolisPresident, I began the year focused onseeing our membership talk more aboutdesign with one another. Yes, we allcompete for projects. We all compete fortalent, but we all share the same passionto elevate design. I hope the commit-ment of my time and energy during this past term captured that essence.

In June at the 2019 AIA Indy DesignExcellence Gala, I could not have beenprouder with how our members, their significant others, families, sponsors, and fellow design professionals filledthe Indiana State Museum’s Great Hallto celebrate design in a big way. Over 250 fans of architecture celebratedwith Visit Indy’s Chris Gahl, our Emcee, and came dressed up to the nines surrounded by live music, great foodand drink, laughter, dancing and best ofall, we all talked about design, together. You also saw a continued introductionof the AIA Indy 3-Minute Snippet wheremembers engaged in energetic monthly presentations – 3 emerging professionals from 3 firms each unveiling a 1-minute design peek at current design. It was fun, fast, immer-

sive – what better way to share the design work happening around us. And national architects joined in too, as Barry Yoakum, FAIA, of archimania and Rick Joy, AIA, visited to share their design beliefs, their practice, their work, and tell compelling stories about craft and the making of architecture. So yes, talking about design together keeps us all inspired. And while I’ve handed the 2020 reins over to col-league Lora Teagarden, AIA, my hope is that we continue to talk about and celebrate the value of design.

Form + Function played a big role in atelierRISTING’s design of a glass pavilion addition to a Mid-Century Modern home in Zionsville.

From modern to historic, the Architects’ Home Tour showcased residential design and gave the public a lot of inspiration for their own home projects.

Difference Makers

Jeremy J Welu, AIA, a co-founder of DELV Architecture in Indianapolis, was named Young Architect of the Year. With a passion for technology, Jeremy created a lab inside the design studio, where he and his team explore, develop, and pilot new tools. He’s also leveraging his ideas to help ad-vance and elevate small firms, which make up 85 percent of U.S. firms. Jeremy’s been invited to share his expertise on the national stage by organizations such as AIA National and the Society of College and University Planning (SCUP) and American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Steve Alspaugh, AIA, an associate at Schmidt Associates received the Edward D. Pierre Award for his tireless advocacy for children, students, housing and progressive planning. His leadership and vision has influenced the implementation of affordable housing and neighborhood beautification and revitalization.

William Payne, AIA, a partner at Fanning Howey in Indianap-olis, received a President’s Award for the work he’s done in advocating for architects and design during his role as AIA Indiana Legislative Committee Chairman.

Indiana has updated residential building codes thanks, in part to Mark Demerly, AIA, owner of Demerly Architects, who advocated for codes to make buildings safer for resi-dents and firefighters. AIA Indiana presented Demerly with a President’s Awards for all that he’s done.

ROWLAND DESIGN’S NEW HOME FOR BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

The American Institute of Architects Indiana recognizes influential architects and community leaders who advocate for design and advance the architecture profession during the organization’s annual convention. Here are the AIA Indy architects who received 2019 service awards.

Rowland Design was named Firm of the Year. For more than 50 years, Rowland Design has been passionate about saving historic buildings and adaptive reuse projects. Rowland Design’s influence can be seen throughout the Indianapolis metro area. The firm has been involved in every Indianap-olis major sporting facility including The RCA Dome, The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Banker’s Life Fieldhouse, Victory Field and Lucas Oil Stadium.

EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN AWARDHONOR AWARDNew Construction over $1 millionAXIS Architecture + Interiors received the Excellence in Design and the Honor Award for its design of the Julia M. Carson Transit Center, which has changed the Indianapolis land-scape with its sleek, modern design. It’s also made taking the IndyGo bus easier for riders, which was the design team’s goal.

HONOR AWARDNew Construction under $1 millionSUSTAINABILITY AWARDA little cabin in remote Iowa won an Honor Award and garnered the first- ever sustainability award. Owned, designed and even built by architectSteve Risting, AIA, of atelierRISTING, theoff-the-grid, net-zero cabin was carvedout of the woods on land that’s been inRisting’s family for more than 150 years.

CITATION AWARDHistoric PreservationAmerican Structurepoint breathed newlife into the abandoned 1912 FlackvilleSchool turning it into EagledaleSenior Apartments on Indy’s west side.

CITATION AWARDInterior ArchitectureAXIS Architecture + Interiors trans-formed a tired, 100,000-square-footoffice built in the 1900s into a hip, modernworkspace in downtown Indianapolis.

CITATION AWARDRenovation/AdditionWhen designers at AXIS Architecture+ Interiors began work on The Mariettaoffice and co-working space, it wanted to pay homage to the historic Marott Center, which it’s connected to on Massachusetts Avenue.

CITATION AWARDNew Construction over $5 millionRATIO designed a modern newhome for Phoenix Theater thatcaptures the unique identity of thisIndianapolis institution. It featuresraw, spartan materials, recycledpre-cast concrete with pops ofsaturated colors.

CITATION AWARDNew Construction under $5 millionHAUS | Architecture for Modern Lifestyles designed a modern, 4,300- square-foot home to blend into nature on a 25-acre lot in Zionsville.

MERIT AWARDRenovation/Addition The Paul H. O’Neill Graduate Center at Indiana University in Bloomington has a new façade to the original 1980’s building, state-of-the-art classrooms and three large student commons areas that foster the school’s tradition of multidisciplinary collaboration thanks to the designof BSA LifeStructures.

MERIT AWARDNew Construction over $5 millionHardwood trees from the heavily wooded lot were harvested and then used as part of krM Architecture’s design of the Indianapolis Public Library Michigan Road Branch.

MERIT AWARDHistoric PreservationThe 53-step self-supporting, free-standing staircase is the focal point of RATIO’S design of the renovationof the Greek-Revival Shrewsbury- Windle House in Madison.

MERIT AWARDInterior Architecture Built in 1922, the former Meyer Kiser Bank was a little bit Art Deco and alittle bit Mid-Century, so RATIO unified the best of the past to create a modernoffice space inside this 12-story downtown Indianapolis office building at 130 E. Washington St.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDWhile a panel of architects from Kansas judged the Excellence Awards, those who attended the AIA Indianapolis Gala got to cast their votes for their favorite design. The winner was RATIO for its design of the Indianapolis Zoo Bicentennial Pavilion and Promenade.

Great design deserves a big celebration, which is why one of Rob Proctor’s goals for AIA Indy was to host a party to talk about design and recognize award winners. In June, a sell-out crowd of more than 250 people attended the first-ever AIA Indianapolis Design Excellence Awards Gala at the Indiana State Museum. Joe Barnes, AIA, of RATIO and Geoff DeSmit, AIA, ofAxis Architecture + Interiors chaired the committee, which put on the gala that people are still talking about.

GLASS CABIN

“The simple elegance of this project and site epitomizes what modern architecture should be about. There is a natural feeling to the way that the cabin nestles into the woods and the way it delicately floats above the flood plain, like the two were made for each other.” — Excellence Awards jury

Making a Difference

NEIGHBORHOOD ADVOCATE RECEIVES AWARDMarjorie Kienle isn’t afraid to speak her mind, especially when her neighborhood is concerned. She’s made phone calls, testified at public meetings and collaborated with other organizations, including AIA Indianapolis to protect historic neighborhoods. At 73 and retired, her calendar is filled with meetings and events. There’s a lot of work to do. She is on the executive committee and former president of Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis (HUNI), where she has spearheaded efforts to stop digital billboards from being al-lowed in downtown Indianapolis and advocated against the Indiana Department of Transportation’s (INDOT) expansion plans for I65/I70. In both instances, AIA Indy joined forces with community organizations to help ban digital billboards and convince INDOT to rethink its plans. “I learned early on, you can’t stand alone,” she said. “You get more done working together.” In December, AIA Indy presented Marjorie with a Service Award for her advocacy. She understands architecture more than most. Marjorie grew up in a gothic Victorian in Ohio. She’s been married more than 50 years to Jim Kienle, FAIA, a long-time AIA member, whom she met while they were stu-dents at Ohio State University. His idea of a great date was to look at architecture and then have coffee or wine. They later renovated a home together in Lockerbie. After retiring (twice) as a speech therapist, Marjorie gave more of her time to causes she cares about deeply. While Marjorie says she’s honored to receive the recog-nition from AIA, she makes it clear that HUNI’s success has been because of the team she works so closely with — they often complete each other’s sentences. She also credits the support of her husband Jim, who has been by her side, sup-porting her, and telling her, “You can do it, you can do it.” JASON SHELLEY NAMED HONORARY AIA Since Jason Shelley, Hon. AIA, became executive director of AIA Indiana in 2007, he has helped prevent Indiana’s energy codes from expiring in 2016, brought together architects to create the state’s first tornado refuge guide for Indiana schools, advocated for the Indiana Department of Transpor-tation (INDOT) to rethink its plans to expand I65/I70, worked with government leaders to streamline the plan review pro-cess, raised money for scholarships, brought new educational opportunities to members, and more. The achievements earned him the prestigious Honorary AIA membership, which is given to non-architects who make notable contributions to the profession. Jason was one of only three people nationally to be recognized in 2019. “Jason is an empowering leader helping members grow professionally, encouraging increased involvement in the community through advocacy and providing the resources members need to practice effectively,” Lisa Gomperts, FAIA, a principal at Schmidt Associates and former president of AIA Indiana, said in nominating Shelley.

AMOS MEMORIAL PUBLIC LIBRARY

krM Architecture made learning a whole lot more fun in its three award- winning projects. The light-infused design of the Indianapolis Public Library Michigan Road branch receiv- ed an Honor Award for Construction greater than $1 million. The firm also gave the Amos Memorial Public Library in Sydney, Ohio a playful new interior that received a Citation Award in Preservation / Adaptive Reuse / Renovation. Judges loved how the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, P3 Innovation & Education Center in Anderson conveys innovation and said, “The building is a machine for learning.” kRM Architecture received a Citation

Award in New Construction greater than $1 million for the project.

HAUS | Architecture For Modern Lifestyles received an Honor Award in New Construction under $1 million for the design of the contemporary home named Copperwood in Zionsville. The firm took influences from a 1956 Mid-Century Modern home in India-napolis to give it a more modern look, which earned HAUS a Merit Award in Preservation / Adaptive Reuse / Renovation.
