What is Industrial Symbiosis?

What is Industrial Symbiosis? (Cont.)
Extended to industry:
Industrial symbiosis is a resource efficiency approach where unused or residual resources of one company are used by another.
Materials – wood, plastics, food waste, WEEE, metals.
Expertise – ISO 9000, ISO 14000, OSHAS 18001, best practice.
Capacity – under-utilised equipment, lab facilities.
Logistics – transport, warehouse facilities, land.
Water and Energy – waste heat, steam, borehole, process.

Core principle: Industrial symbiosis aims to find
reuse and recycling solutions for waste materials to divert waste from landfill, while at the same time creating real businesses
benefits for members.

Industrial Symbiosis Advances Sustainability
q Promotes development of circular systems within the industrial sector.
q Uses the principles of the waste hierarchy.
q Creates mutual economic, environmental and social benefits for companies involved.
Economic benefits Increase profits. Increase sales. Reduce waste disposal costs. Create enterprise development opportunities. Reduce raw material costs.
Environmental benefits Reduce CO2 emissions. Divert material from landfill. Reduce use of virgin resources. Reduce hazardous waste disposal.
Social benefits Create jobs. Create opportunities for knowledge transfer and learning.

Industrial Symbiosis Models
Co-location Model

q Build and Recruit model
q Self organizing Industrial park model
q Retrofit Industrial Park Model In South Africa most of the park fit within the this model because they were established without IS in mind but looking at other reasons such as logistically convenient.
Future planning such as SEZs also provide an opportunity to intergrade the ISP in the industrial parks and to implement Eco- Industrial Park initiatives

GISP
KISP
www.ncpc.co.za
GISP and KISP are free services that connect companies so that they can identify and realise the business opportunities enabled by using unused or residual resources (materials, energy, water, assets, logistics, expertise). Connecting industry – Creating opportunity

South Africa’s Facilitated Industrial Symbiosis Programmes
q Build an industrial symbiosis network.
q Facilitate the exchange of information through Business Opportunity Workshops and one – one site visits.
q Record and upload resources onto SYNERGieTM, an online resource management system.
q Support the implementation of resource matches, facilitating negotiations and providing technical expertise.
q Develop summary reports and case studies for implemented synergies.
q Measuring the impact of Industrial Symbiosis.

q An assessment of the economic benefits of diverting waste from landfill through GISP was done, looking at the associated contribution to the South African GDP and Gauteng provincial GDPR based on tonnes of waste diverted since 2015;
q Below are the summary results GISP has generated a total economic value of R94.8 m between April 2015 and March 2018; based on: – landfill airspace savings; – value of recovered resources; and – avoided externalities.
q Based on the tonnages diverted in 2017/18 alone
– the economic impact has been estimated at R89.5 m/pa

q According to Statistics South Africa (2018b), South Africa’s nominal GDP was R4.7 trillion for 2017fy.
– As such, during 2017/18fy, GISP annual economic impact value of R89.5 million represents 0.0019% of South Africa’s GDP.
q Gauteng province contributes approximately 34% to South African GDP (Statistics South Africa, 2017).
– The annual economic impact of R89.5 million realised by GISP represents 0.0056% of Gauteng’s GDPR.
q From the above assessment, it was noted that Gauteng’s GDPR for 2017 was approximately 34% of R4.7 trillion, i.e. R1.6 trillion.
q The presented results suggest that the Gauteng Industrial Symbiosis Programme has generated economic benefits in the order of R94.8 million since 2015.

• Going forward,
q The programme can be expected to generate an economic impact in the order of R89.5 million on annual basis.
q This represents 0.0019% of South Africa’s national GDP, and 0.0056% of Gauteng’s GDPR.
q This figures presents an investment opportunity in the green enterprise.
