Are you struggling to run your business and handle the never-ending stream of paperwork that comes in?

In the past several years the system has gotten worse and the requirements have grown substantially. It is riddled with ever changing requirements and substantial penalties for small errors. Between payroll, sales tax, city taxes, 1099’s and W-2’s the average small business owner can certainly get themselves into a lot of trouble quickly.

For the past 30 years we have been saying the same thing. It was true then and is still true today.

Are you ready? Here it is…Spend your time concentrating

on your business, maximize your income and use your time wisely.

When you spend your valuable time suffering over the book-keeping, it is time wasted. What you can do in five hours we can accomplish in two. For example,

I prepare tax returns, more than 1,500 per year. Should I leave the office and go home to mow my

lawn? Take a week off and paint my own home? Absolutely not! I pay a professional to do the job while I stay focused on my craft.

And, we do it better! Never underestimate the value of hiring a great bookkeeper with the proper training and supervision of an accountant. For example, by understanding the 1099 versus W-2 laws, we proactively separate employees and subcontractors right away, thus avoiding IRS

notices, CA labor law issues and upset employees. By collecting I-9 forms for employees, we avoid US Department of Labor issues by verifying that an employee is legally eligible to be employed. Businesses are a catalyst for civic growth and the engine that builds strong

communities. This is particularly true of small businesses, whose owners - driven by the pursuit of the American dream - create jobs for the community and contrib-ute to a sense of civic pride.

Here in Carlsbad, we are very fortunate to be surrounded by many local businesses that have been instrumental, some of them for many years, in shaping this city into the vibrant place we call home. Take Flight With UsCP Air is raising $20 million to help launch a better way to travel to North County San Diego, delivering on our vision to offer convenient jet service, increase local commerce and create new jobs for our community. Now you can help make it happen.

A VISION FOR THE COMMUNITYWhen California Pacific Airlines begins service, the impact on North County and service city communities will be immeasurable. CP Air not only brings the much needed convenience of jet service to North County (supporting business and leisure travel), but it will also drive significant regional economic growth and create new jobs. CP Air will be Southern California’s only truly hometown airline, an airline that our community will be proud of.

Launching an airline is a very complicated operation. For the last 4 years, we have worked to assemble the best team to meet all of the critical FAA regulation requirements

and we are proud to say that we continue to finalize the necessary steps towards formal certification.

We are fortunate to have passionate, early investors who share our vision and continue to work with us to meet our ongoing capital requirements. In order for us to finalize the launch process, we need to continue to raise the necessary funds to complete the certification process and initiate operational service.

With the JOBS Act now easing regulations on the funding of U.S. small businesses to spur growth and create more jobs, we are now able to invite our community to directly participate

in our vision and become a critical resource to help raise the remaining funds needed to launch California Pacific Airlines.

FUELING A VISIONThe Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act is a law intended to jumpstart the economy by creating opportunities for small businesses, startups and entrepreneurs. For California Pacific Airlines, the JOBS Act means we can now invite more people to invest in our vision to bring a better way to travel to our North County communities.

CARLSBAD BUSINESS JOURNAL JANUARY 2018 | 3

After two years serving as Chairman of the Board it is time to pass the gavel to Ahmed Haque, of NRG Energy, Inc. As I look back on my two years serv-ing as your Chairman I reflect on lessons learned, friendships earned, and meetings adjourned.

Coming into this position two years ago I didn’t realize how much I really didn’t know about our Chamber, our community, and our members. I understood that our members needed net-working events, ongoing educa-tion, and opportunities for vis-ibility. But what I didn’t realize is how valuable the Chamber is when it comes to advocating on behalf of business.

Just by the fact that we have as many members as we do helps us have a strong voice in state and local legislative issues. The more members we have, the stronger our voice, and the better we are as a business community. So even if your business doesn’t use any of the other opportunities that the Chamber has to offer, just the fact that you are a member is extremely important to both the Chamber and the community.

Thank you to all of the Cham-ber members that took time out of your schedules to have a cup of coffee with me at some point during the last two years. Your candid discussions about how the Chamber brings value to your business have been a significant part of my learning curve. But more importantly I feel like I have made many new friends along the way.

It has also been a pleasure to work with Toni Padron and the entire Chamber staff. I have a new appreciation for your dedi-cation and your hard work. But most especially I want to thank Ted Owen for his ongoing sup-port and filling me in on the pros and cons of all of the issues that our Board faced over the last

two years. Ted’s mentorship has developed my horizons and I will always cherish the friendship we developed as a result.

And speaking of the Board, our Board of Directors and our Executive Board were amazing. I’m so proud of all of you that spoke up during meetings and asked the tough questions, or provided valuable wisdom, or took a chance on admitting that you just didn’t understand the issue. It’s the diversity in the dif-ferent points of view that bring us to the best conclusions and our Board did a great job at that. Thank you all for the time you sacrificed in attending the Board meetings, the Executive Board meetings, and many of the other Chamber functions. Your com-mitment is inspiring.

This is my last CBJ article as Chairman of the Board, but it’s not the last you will hear from me. I’ll see you at the Board meetings, committee meetings, First Friday Breakfast, Happy Hour 2.0, and many other events throughout the year. I wish you all a very prosperous 2018 and beyond.

Positive thoughts to carry you into 2018

Every once in a while, I need to get a dose of positive thoughts to help me along the road to my own success. A new year is always a good oppor-tunity to revisit those positive thoughts and start fresh and energized. As I was reading some of the new publications in my mail, I selected a few quotes and thoughts to share with you. Some are funny and some are insightful, but if they make you laugh or think, then they have served their purpose of helping us cope.

• Don’t ever think you don’t have time to do something, after all there are 525,600 minutes in each and every year.

• People with flexibility never get bent out of shape.

• The young and the old have all the answers. Those in between are stuck with the questions.

• Don’t worry about what is ahead. Just go as far as you can go, from there you can see much farther.

• Minds are like parachutes, they only function when open.

• A healthy attitude is con-tagious, but don’t wait to catch it from others. Be a carrier.

• People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.

• An optimist is a person who sees a green light everywhere. The pessimist sees only the red light. The truly wise person is colorblind.

THE MAN WHO THINKS HE CAN“If you think you are beaten, you are;If you think that you dare not, you don’t.If you’d like to win, but you think you can’t,It’s almost certain you won’t.If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost,For out in the world you’ll find, Success begins with a fellow’s will,It’s all in the state of mind.If you think you are outclassed, you are, You’ve got to think high to rise, You’ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize.Life’s battles don’t always goTo the stronger or faster man,But sooner or later, the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can.”

- Walter D. Wintle

Last thought for the month: “A positive attitude will not

solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.”

Happy New Year 2018!

just scratching the surface.Naturally, I’m partial to my

staff of bookkeepers who have an extreme talent for digging, recording, classifying and planning. The better the book-keeping the lower the tax bite, plain and simple. We retain our clients for decades because they have heard horror stories from friends or fellow small business owners or they have experienced multiple issues themselves prior to hiring our firm. We are so proud of the fact that because of our vast data-base of knowledge, education

and experience, we can help our clients have peace of mind knowing that they won’t be get-ting any surprise notices in the mail from regulatory agencies.

We believe that if your cor-porations, bookkeeping, pay-roll, sales tax, 1099s, secretary of state, property tax, city tax licenses and income taxes are all set up correctly and prop-erly maintained, then audits, notices, penalties and lawsuits are a thing of the past. As accountants, we are naturally budget conscious, and it pains us to see anyone pay unneces-sary penalties or interest that could have been avoided by being proactive and diligent.

In an opera it is said, “it’s not over until the fat lady sings.”

Well, that’s also true in a world of taxation. I don’t believe in waiting until April 15th to try to help clients with tax planning. Let us help you with your 2017 tax returns and start turning the boat around to help you avoid paying any unnecessary taxes for years to come.

SEEING IS BELIEVING

On the first Tuesday of each month, Carlsbad Village business owners, managers and employ-ees, as well as downtown residents, meet from 8:30 am to 9:30 am to discuss opportunities in the Vil-lage, events taking place, to hear from industry leaders, and more. We always build in time for networking so that, much like the Chamber, we can confidently refer business to one another as we build solid professional and per-sonal relationships.

At the January Village Voices meeting, CVA has an excellent meeting agenda planned complete with a new business spot-light and guest speaker. Joe Barille, the owner of Café Topes and The Goods, will be speaking to us on his history in the Village and why he and his family

chose our downtown for both of their restaurant locations. We are also very excited to announce that Mr. Barille will be bringing with him gourmet donuts to enjoy from his newest business, The Goods.

We are also pleased to have as our guest speaker, Richard Schultz, the Cul-tural Arts Manager with the Library & Cultural Arts Department for the City of Carlsbad. Mr. Schultz will be discussing the Arts & Culture Plan currently in process as well as public art

projects considered for the Village. With the draft plan being presented to deci-sion makers and released for public comment in early 2018, with planned adoption in the Summer of 2018, this topic is very timely and of great interest to the Village.

If you currently own, oper-ate or work at a downtown business, or are consider-ing a move to the Village, we welcome you to attend Village Voices on Tuesday, January 2nd, from 8:30 am to 9:30 am. Come a bit early to enjoy hot coffee and gour-met donuts, and stay a while afterwards to get to know your fellow business owners, operators and residents. Vil-lage Voices meets inside the New Village Arts Foundry Artist Studios at 2787 State Street. No RSVP necessary; plenty of parking available.

CARLSBAD BUSINESS JOURNAL JANUARY 2018 | 5

The City of Carlsbad library system hosts a wide array of services that appeal to local businesses, and it has lined up some exciting programs for early 2018, including a presentation by Daniel Pink, a bestselling author whose innovative insights challenge many standard business practices.

Pink’s work is Carlsbad Reads Together’s choice for this year. Carlsbad Reads Together, hosted by the Carlsbad City Library, brings community mem-bers together and engages them in a discussion about the same selection of books at the same time. Pink’s works focus on big ideas to reshape our work, transform our businesses and change our lives. Everyone is invited to join the conversation by reading any of Pink’s titles, with an emphasis on “A Whole New Mind,” “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us,” “To Sell is Human,” or the soon to be released “When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing.”

Pink will appear at the Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane, on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018, at 2 p.m. Admis-sion is free.

Pink is highly regarded as a business innovator who was named in 2015 as one of the top 10 business think-ers in the world by London-based Thinkers 50. He has been a contributing editor at Fast Company and Wired, as well as a business colum-nist for The Sunday Telegraph. He has also contributed to The New York Times, Harvard Business Review and other publications.

Pink’s work is especially relevant to business, because

his observations on the sci-ence of motivation can apply to everyday business prac-tices, talent attraction and professional development. His TED Talk on the science of motivation is one of the 10 most-watched TED Talks of all time.

Carlsbad is lucky to attract such a well-known name in the world of modern business prac-tices. We encourage our business community to use this year’s Carlsbad Reads Together as a way to start a book club, organize a group to attend Pink’s talk on Feb. 11, or engage with employ-ees in ways that haven’t been done before.

“These books apply to business, and, as part of Carlsbad Reads Together, city staff will provide local businesses with resources to conduct group discus-sions about Pink’s works,” said Diane Bednarski, deputy director for the City of Carlsbad library system.

In other programming efforts, the library will launch its 2018 workshop series, “Your Library Means Business,” which it has hosted for several years. The workshops will begin in January and will take place on the fourth Tues-day of every month for five months. The workshops will be held in the evening,

from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., to make it easy for business owners to attend. They will be held at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane.

Topics and speakers are still being finalized, and here are the topics for the first two months:

Jan. 23: The North San Diego Small Business Devel-opment Center will present a workshop by marketing specialist Lynn Pittman, who will focus on effective and innovative marketing for small businesses. Pitt-man will also discuss ser-vices offered at the North San Diego Small Business Development Center and So Cal Veterans Business Outreach Center, which are hosted by MiraCosta Col-lege’s Technology Career Institute located at 2075 Las Palmas Drive in Carlsbad.

Feb. 27: Cyndi Dar-lington, expert in brand-ing, communications and media, will present on how to select the best social media venue for your small business, and how to engage your customers.

The remaining three dates for the workshops are March 27, April 24 and May 22. The city’s eco-nomic development staff will present during the series to provide informa-tion on city and regional services that support our business community.

Consult the library’s web-site at www.carlsbadca.gov/library for announcements about future workshop topics. The library is an excellent resource for our local busi-nesses, and the library staff invites you to take advantage of its many services.

Like the mythical Phoe-nix bird, Carlsbad-based California Pacific Air-lines has risen from a tangle of bureaucracy and will be flying to six cities by April 1. The multi-city air service will be flying four E-145 and two E-170, all pure jets.

CPA’s Embaer 145s will hold 44 passengers each; the E-170 will carry 60. The cities served will be Phoenix, Las Vegas, Sacra-mento, Oakland, San Jose, and the Mexican resort city Cabo San Lucas. Service frequency will range from once daily to three round trips on various routes, all out of McClellan-Palomar Airport. All planes will be

in Carlsbad overnight, ready for the next day.

Chief Operating Officer Paul W. J. Hook, who also serves as director of opera-tions, said CPAir, through a to-be-announced purchase of a 58-year-old airline, will have the FAA 121 certificate required for scheduled airlines. Hook is a veteran airline pilot with service in four countries, including Saudi Arabia where he was the chief pilot for the royal family for 14 years.

“Once we have the six planes delivered to us in March, we immediately can start service,” said Hook. “Each plane will have both first and business-class seat-ing. Economy passengers

won’t see much difference from business class. Our ticket pricing will be com-petitive with other airlines serving the area.”

In 2011, CPAir was founded by Carlsbad entre-preneur Ted Vallas. Previ-ously, Vallas owned and operated Air Resorts, also a scheduled airline flying out of San Diego’s Lindbergh Field. Vallas will serve as chairman of the new CPAir board of directors.

CARLSBAD BUSINESS JOURNAL JANUARY 2018 | 7

With the number of sea-sonal flu cases rising across San Diego County, Scripps Health is offering valuable tips to avoid getting sick and to deal with the illness if it strikes.

“The best protection against the flu, especially now that the flu season is surging, is getting vacci-nated,” said Scripps Health Chief Medical Officer James LaBelle, M.D. “In addition, people should wash their hands thoroughly and often, and avoid contact with sick people.”

The number of lab-confirmed influenza cases has risen significantly with 574 reported so far this season, compared to 174 at the same time last year, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency’s Influenza Watch report. Four flu-related deaths have been reported, com-pared to one at this time last year.

Those most at risk of developing flu-related com-plications include people 65 years and older, children under the age of 2, preg-nant women, people with chronic conditions such as asthma, heart disease, neurological conditions, blood disorders, weak-ened immune system and morbid obesity.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent getting the flu. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for enough

antibodies to build up in the body and develop immunity.

Other flu season tips

Wash your hands often with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Watch out for flu symp-toms, which can include a fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue.

Stay away from sick people. If you become sick,

stay home from work and school and avoid contact with others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends staying home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone without using fever-reducing medicine.

Cover your coughs and avoid the emergency room unless you are suffer-ing from more serious flu symptoms, such

as difficulty breathing or shortness of breath; chest or abdomen pain or pressure; sudden dizzi-ness; confusion; severe or persistent vomiting; flu symptoms that improve but then return with fever and a worse cough.

For children, seek emer-gency medical help if they are breathing fast or are having trouble breathing; have bluish skin color; aren’t drinking enough fluids, aren’t waking up or interacting; are so irritable they don’t want to be held; have a fever with a rash; aren’t able to eat; don’t shed tears when crying; have significantly fewer wet diapers than normal; flu symptoms improve but then return with fever and a worse cough.

Check with your doctor to see if you should be treated with an antiviral drug. Scripps patients can call 1-800-SCRIPPS (1-800-727-4777) to schedule a visit.

Tips to fight influenza as cases rise

Getting vaccinated is still the best protection against the flu.

CARLSBAD BUSINESS JOURNAL JANUARY 2018 | 1110 | WWW.CARLSBAD.ORG

We’ve reached the start of another year – which means it’s just about time for some New Year’s resolu-tions. Would you like to study a new language, take up a musical instru-ment or visit the gym more often? All these are worthy goals, of course, but why not also add some financial resolutions?

Here are some ideas to think

about:

Increase contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. For 2018, you can contrib-ute up to $18,500 (or $24,500 if you’re 50 or older) to your 401(k) or similar plan, such as a 403(b), for employees of public schools and some nonprofit groups, or a 457(b) plan, for employees of local governments. It’s usually a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your employer’s plan, as your contributions may lower your taxable income, while your earnings can grow tax-deferred. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contri-bution, if one is offered.

Try to “max out” on your IRA. Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan, you can probably still invest in an IRA. For 2018, you can con-tribute up to $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older. (Income restrictions apply to Roth IRAs.) Contributions to a

traditional IRA may be tax-deduct-ible, depending on your income, and your earnings can grow tax-deferred. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but earnings can grow tax-free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you are 59-1/2 and you’ve have had your account at least five years. You can put virtually any investment in an IRA, so it can expand your options beyond those offered in your 401(k) or similar plan.

Build an emergency fund. Try to build an emergency fund conaining three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a low-risk, liquid account. This fund can help you avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a new furnace or a major car repair.

Control your debts. It’s never easy, but do what you can to keep your debts under control. The less

you have to spend on debt payments, the more you can invest for your future.

Don’t overreact to changes in the financial markets. We’ve had a long run of rising stock prices – but it won’t last forever. If we experience a sharp market downturn in 2018, don’t overreact by taking a “time out” from investing. Market drops are a normal feature of the invest-ment landscape, and you may ulti-mately gain an advantage by buying new shares when their prices are down.

Review your goals and risk tol-erance. At least once in 2018, take some time to review your short- and long-term financial goals and try to determine, possibly with the help of a financial professional, if your investment portfolio is still appropri-ate for these goals. At the same time, you’ll want to re-evaluate your risk tolerance to ensure you’re not taking too much risk – or possibly too little risk – with your investments.

Do your best to stick with these resolutions throughout the coming year. At a minimum, they can help you improve your investment habits – and they may improve your finan-cial picture far beyond 2018.

Achieving success with strategic planning

In any business, the foundation for success is a realistic set of achievable goals and objectives for the company, as well as a means by which to real-ize them. The formulation and implementation is called Strategic Planning (SP). Is the company built to provide its founders with professional fulfill-ment until retirement? Is the goal to grow and sell for a substantial payday? Somewhere in between? In order to determine and realize these goals, strate-gic planning is likely the most valuable investment a business can make.

Defining SuccessThe first thing SP will

do is to reconcile the pro-fessional and personal visions for a company. It will help firmly and clearly establish a company’s defi-nition of success and prior-itize that definition as the company’s primary objec-tive. Such strategies will include long and short term plans, returns on investment, the differ-e n t i a t i o n b e t w e e n the plan and actuality, and

forecasting the future of the company, its competitors, and role in the marketplace.

Successful businesses operate in a culture where there are clearly-defined, uniform goals that have potential to benefit every-one. By consolidating the goals from the top of the organization to the bottom, it’s easier to communicate the message to everyone within the organization, so that all employees become catalysts for the company’s success.

Allocation of ResourcesSP ensures the allocation

of resources so that every decision -- from personnel to spending to marketing -- is made with a singular goal. Resources are spent with intent rather than speculation. Additionally, every decision (both finan-cial and non) will be adjusted to accommodate the goals of the business rather than individual departments.

Ryan Thomas Consulting offers

full expertise and support to help plan for the future of your company

and will help real-ize your company’s

full potential.

Need more money? Four moves to considerA common question Finan-

cial Advisors hear from clients is, “How can I save more than I’m saving now?”

Fortunately, there are several ways you can accomplish that goal with a bit of professional help.

Consider the following:

Monitor expenses. Lower-ing your expenses by a modest amount such as 1% could allow you to boost your savings ini-tiatives as much as a compa-rable increase in pay.

To gain insights into your current spending habits, con-sider downloading a budget-ing app for your smart phone. They’re much easier to use than they used to be and make expense tracking very simple. For example, many apps allow you to record your income and spending on the go, incorpo-rating information from vari-ous accounts, in order to have an up-to-the-minute overview of your financial standing each day. You can then look for inefficiencies--and ways to economize.

Reduce credit card expenses. On average, each US household with credit card debt owes a balance of more than $15,000.1 You can elimi-nate such debt faster--and start saving more--by paying more than the minimum monthly amount on your credit cards

each month. For example, assume

you have a $1,000 credit card debt with a 12% interest rate. By paying $20 each month, it would take 67 months to eliminate the debt and would cost you $353.43 in interest. But by doubling your monthly payment to $40, you would be out of debt in just 27 months. Your inter-est costs would be less than half--$103.28. Then, when you finish paying off your balance, redirect the money you’d been spending on debt each month to a savings or investment account.

Another way to tackle debt expenses aggres-sively is by consolidating credit card balances to a single, lower-rate card. Comparison shop for the best rates, but beware of “teaser” rates that start low then jump higher after an initial introductory period ends.

Boost contributions. If you participate in a workplace retirement plan, consider increasing your contribution by an additional 1% or 2% of income. Even if you think that may be too much, try it out for a few months. The extra effort

could make a big difference down the road: Contributing even $20 extra each week could provide you with an additional $87,493 after 30 years (before taxes), assuming 6% annual investment returns.2

Use windfalls wisely. While it may be tempting to spend a windfall--such as an inheritance or workplace bonus--on something fun, it’s probably a better idea to use the money to enhance your long-term financial standing. For example, assuming you

invest a $2,000 wind-fall in an account earn-ing a 6% annual rate of return, it could grow to $2,698 after 5 years, $6,620 after 20 years or $12,045 after 30 years (before taxes).2

At Morgan Stanley, we can help you imple-ment effective strategies for reducing expenses and set up customized savings and investment plans to help pursue

your goals. Call me so we can talk about the best way to get started.

Getting divorced is not only emotional, but equally challenging when it comes to understanding the various financial assets you own and how to equitably divide them. While most individuals facing a divorce hire their own attorneys, few take the time to hire their own Financial Planner to assist them.

If contemplating divorce, or already in the negotiation stages, you should consider the following.

Retirement Assets: Whether you have Roth IRAs, 401k plans or IRAs, the current tax status and future tax liability is far different than that of your liquid invest-ments or cash accounts. Under-standing the difference in these assets and considering the valu-ation during settlement is crucial.

Real Estate: When it comes to the marital home, there is often an emotional attachment felt by one or both spouses. It is extremely important to evaluate the cost to maintain the property including the mortgage, taxes, insurance, utilities, etc. and ensure that your post-divorce income will allow you to maintain the expense without creating a

financial burden. From the other perspective understanding the taxes and cost to sell should also be evaluated in this decision.

Company Stock: If you or your spouse receives stock compensa-tion, vested and even unvested shares may be considered marital property. An analysis can be com-pleted by a Certified Divorce Finan-cial Analyst™ to determine what portion of this asset should be con-sidered in the divorce settlement.

There are many more finan-cial considerations that should be evaluated including taxes, support, beneficiary designa-tions, and estate planning. If you are contemplating divorce, you should hire your own finan-cial planner, ideally a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst™. If your current Financial Planner is a Fiduciary, they cannot advise you individually and as a result are not the best option for advice on how to structure the settle-ment to your best interest.

With the skyrocketing growth of home delivery for everything from bicycles to groceries, yesterday’s distri-bution center has become the “wishlist fulfillment center” of tomorrow.

Today, impulse items are big sellers online, and buyers want those pur-chases just as quickly as they want the essentials for home and business use. Fulfillment center opera-tors are innovating and adapting their business model to service consumer demand and, similarly, Sunwest Bank is doing the same to service and pro-vide financing in this ever changing landscape.

The Shift Towards Instant Gratification

“On-demand-every-thing” is blurring the lines between what once clearly defined generations. Con-sumers of every age are now enjoying the benefits of instant gratification - Baby Boomers and Millen-nials alike.

But what does this mean for businesses who service the rising expectations of

consumer demand for same or next day delivery? Is this an opportunity, or a threat? Some businesses would say “both”, but the logistics operators and fulfillment providers of today would say it’s a huge opportunity.

From Days to HoursThe supply chain and

transportation industries have coined the term “last mile,” a term often used to describe the movement of goods from its original location – the warehouse or transportation facility - to its final destination – a home or business.

The emergence of the “last mile” over the past decade has developed two distinct new distribution models for fulfillment centers and the operators servicing them:

Remote ordering, with same day pickup

available at a convenient location, either a local store or logistics center; and same day, or even hours after order, express delivery directly to a home or business.

Second-day and next-day delivery have shifted from a “premium service” to an expected norm.

A Change of FocusFor those visionaries and

entrepreneurs who con-tinue to shape the future for the American consum-ers, we at Sunwest Bank stand ready to address your financing and fund-ing needs. Whether it’s an acquisition or construc-tion funding, let’s work together to be competitive forces in this new land-scape where professional-ism, efficiency, and innova-tion are key characteristics for advancement.

EVERY BANK HAS BUSINESS ACCOUNTS.OURS COME WITH ACCOUNTABILITY.

Paying employees quickly, securely and in a timely manner keeps employees happy and allows for more financial planning and sta-bility. It’s with this goal that many businesses are turn-ing to payroll cards over paper checks.

Workers who don’t have a checking account, or who don’t want direct deposit, often find payroll cards easy and convenient. Instead of waiting in line at their neighborhood check-cash-ing place on pay day, they get paid electronically and often without surcharges to a Visa® payroll debit card. Payroll cards also enable the unbanked or under-banked to participate fully

in the digital economy: e-commerce, phone pur-chases, and phone and online bill pay. Plus, with electronic protections against unauthorized trans-actions, payroll cards can be safer than carrying cash.

For companies too, the cost-savings and efficien-cies are notable. There are limited fees involved and payroll cards are far more cost-efficient than tradi-tional paper-check meth-ods. Manually distributing a paper check costs a busi-ness about $3.00 in process-ing fees, postage and float. Payroll cards reduce costs and streamline the process.

Many Finance Managers see payroll card programs

as a key part of the Treasury Management relationship they have with their bank. Payroll card services inte-grate easily with existing software systems and can be executed anytime from anywhere using an online system. This is particularly helpful if employees are geographically dispersed, or to ensure employees get paid in the event of an office closure or natural disaster.

Properly executed, payroll card programs provide a convenient and affordable solu-tion for businesses while delivering a flexible, easy-to-use cash access tool for employees.

Don’t let your finan-cial plan get derailed. It’s very easy to spend every dollar we earn per paycheck, but even saving a few dollars here or there can make all the dif-ference in how much you have when you retire. Here is one key concept that will help you in the future (and it’s a real simple one!)…Save, Save, Save!

One of the most impor-tant decisions you make each year is how much to save. It is hard to give

a specific answer since each person’s situation will vary, but it is important to save as much as you can, as early as you can, and within multiple invest-ment vehicles.

If you, like most people, aren’t certain what your tax bracket will be when you retire, it likely makes sense to “diversify” the tax treatment of your retire-ment savings by splitting your savings between Roth IRA’s, Traditional IRA’s, 401(k)’s, 403(b)’s, Annuities, CD’s, Bank Sav-ings, Stocks, Bonds, Real Assets (like Real Estate), etc. Having a diverse set of savings will help when you are trying to manage your income in retirement and minimize your tax bill

at the same time.Whether you are 20

years away from retire-ment or are retiring this year, having a well-written financial plan is extremely important to your finan-cial future. Saving appro-priately with a tax plan in mind is just one part of the bigger picture. You should have a plan that focuses on: Income, Investment, Tax, Healthcare, & Legacy Planning.

Brett Gottlieb is a fee based Financial Advisor at Com-prehensive Advisor. He and his team specialize in com-prehensive financial plan-ning with a primary focus on helping their clients receive the income they need in retire-ment, while protecting their assets. Using their proprie-tary process, The Retirement Defense, they can help you prepare for and manage your retirement needs. For a com-plimentary initial consulta-tion please call 760-813-2125.

STICKING TO A PLAN:

Save early, save oftenThe convenient benefits of Payroll Cards

Two of the most common Estate Planning tools used in California are Wills and Revocable Trusts. What’s the difference and do you need both?

WillsA valid Will in Califor-

nia identifies who should inherit assets passing through the Will (referred to as “probate assets”), and who should oversee the pro-cess of settling the estate.

In California, if you own real property valued at over $50,000 or own other property (including real

property) over $150,000, it will be necessary to go through a probate proceeding to settle the estate, unless you have a Trust. In California, the probate process will take at least two years and will be costly.

Typically, guardianship information is added to Wills for those with minor children. A better prac-tice is to create a separate Guardianship Nomination document to protect your minor children if some-thing catastrophic were to happen to you.

TrustsWhen they are validly

executed and properly funded, Trusts can eliminate the need for time-consum-ing and potentially costly probate court proceedings. The trust agreement iden-tifies one or more trustees who are empowered and charged with honoring your wishes for distribu-tion of assets either shortly after your death, or over a longer period of time.

One benefit of a Trust is to protect inheritances for your children from future creditors, including future

divorcing spouses, and more. Your attorney will ask

you questions about your assets, liabilities, family, and about your goals and wishes before recommending the right legal documents and devices to help you create your unique plan.

Estate Planning is not a “one-size-fits-all” The Estate Planning & Legacy Law Center services allevi-ate wealth concerns and help you to enjoy life and focus on what really matters, your family. Contact us today to get started.

Celebrating more than

Years!35

DR. PATRICIA L. PRADO-OLMOS

HIGHERLEARNING

Vice President of Community Engagement CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS

The Cal State San Marcos athletics program has come a long way since its incep-tion in 1998.

Back then, the athletics department was housed in three small rooms in the University’s administra-tion building. The depart-ment had two coaches for its six teams – men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track and field, and men’s and women’s golf.

Times have certainly changed.

Today, CSUSM has 13 teams and more than 300 student-athletes. The Uni-versity’s facilities have grown to include a track, baseball and softball fields and, most recently, the state-of-the-art Sports Center, home to men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball.

The athletics depart-ment celebrated another important milestone this fall, competing for the first time as a full-fledged NCAA Division II member after successfully complet-ing a three-year transition period.

“This move benefits our athletics program on multi-ple levels,” CSUSM President

Karen Haynes said when the news became official in July. “During the transition to Division II, we have been establishing exciting rival-ries with regional universi-ties, our student-athletes have been able to spend more time in the classroom thanks to reduced travel

time, and our University is better aligned athletically with schools of similar size and stature.”

Division II emphasizes excellence in the classroom as well as in competition, which aligns with CSUSM’s mission to put the student first in “student-athlete.” In fact, nearly 70 percent of CSUSM’s student-athletes had a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher last year, the best mark in depart-ment history.

“Our student-athletes are students, first and foremost,” said Athletics Director Jen-nifer Milo. “The NCAA Divi-sion II philosophy reinforces this. The move to Division

II is directly in line with our department’s mission and values. We want our student-athletes to graduate and develop into well-rounded individuals who will be suc-cessful beyond their life on the playing field.”

Completing the transition means CSUSM teams are eli-gible for Division II postsea-son play for the first time in the 2017-18 academic year. Schools aren’t eligible for the postseason during the transition process.

The CSUSM women’s cross country team wasted no time in taking advantage of the opportunity to com-pete in the postseason, fin-ishing eighth at the NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country Championships in November. Senior Natalie Rodriguez finished third overall to become CSUSM’s first NCAA Division II All-American.

Coinciding with the move to Division II, CSUSM debuted a revamped Crash the Cougar mascot in October at the University’s annual Cougar Madness event that kicks off the start of the college basket-ball season.

Crash was first brought to life by Associated Students, Inc., in 2004 with a student vote and has served CSUSM as the campus-life mascot for 13 years. With the inau-gural season as a full NCAA member, CSUSM officially moved Crash within Cougar Athletics. As part of that transition, students were consulted to create a design that embodies the athletics brand, unifies fan support and elevates the athleticism of the mascot.

“We are excited to embrace our new Crash and continue campus tra-dition, while also bringing in a new look and feel that aligns with our Cougar spirit logo and the NCAA brand,” Milo said.

Visit csusmcougars.com to learn more about Cougars athletics.

It’s a New Era in CSUSM Athletics

A few weeks ago I had the great pleasure of watching as the new National Blue Ribbon School flag was unfurled at Pacific Rim Elementary School.

The flag symbolizes that Pacific Rim Elementary School has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2017. Only 17 Cal-ifornia schools—public and private, K-12—received the Exemplary High Perform-ing Schools honor this year, and Pacific Rim was the only elementary school in San Diego County to receive this accolade.

Up to 420 schools are nominated each year by the top education officials in the states, and those nomi-nated schools must then submit an application to the U.S. Dept. of Education (USDOE) to be selected for recognition. In November, Principal Robert Devich traveled to Washington, D.C., where the USDOE hon-ored a total of 342 schools with its highest award. Blue Ribbon status is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

Pacific Rim Elementary School has consistently posted sky-high test scores. Nearly 94% of its students meet or exceed grade level standards in English Lan-guage Arts and 91% meet or exceed the standards

in Math. And it places in the top 5% of elementary schools in the state on the Niche school-ranking web-site. But those numbers don’t tell the whole story.

“The teachers and staff here work hard every day. They go above and beyond, not for the awards, but for the students,” said Pac Rim’s school nurse Nicole Dunphy. “It starts with Mr. Devich. He has high stan-dards for the school, and the whole staff is always working together for the students with consistency and accountability.“

“I feel blessed to be a part of this school,“ said Pac Rim parent Jessica Berg. “Every-one is totally invested. It is a community. It is about the way students treat one another.Kindness is a top priority. Kids are motivated to be better students, better friends.”

Why was Pac Rim selected for this honor? Here’s what students think: “Hard working and determined students.” “Teachers push us hard, but we still have fun.” “No bullying.” “We follow the golden rule.” “A great principal.” “They let us have fun. But not too much fun.” “Teachers let us do good things.” “Our school is smart.”

“Here at Pac Rim we have high expectations for learning and character development,” said Prin-cipal Devich. “We believe in accountability for aca-demics. We always bring our A-game. We believe in building character—responsibility, kindness—in our students. It’s who we are as a community. We have a dynamic and cohe-sive faculty, with a strong work ethic, who work together for our students.”

National Blue Ribbon status was cause for celebra-tion at Pacific Rim, but life at school quickly reverted to normal. Students are now working hard to meet their Reading Challenge Goals, because Mr. Devich prom-ised that, if they succeed, he would be spending the day on Pac Rim’s roof. The stu-dents are planning to toss him some brownies.

Creating a Winning Mindset

Happy 2018! The start of the New Year is full of a sense of new possibility, fresh energy and hopeful anticipation. Though anytime is a good time to set goals, the New Year is probably the most notable and propitious time to sit down, for-mulate, outline and share goals you want to accomplish both professionally and personally in the coming year.

Whether you’re a small business owner, CEO or an individual employee, success-ful people and businesses take this annual opportunity to start fresh by setting smart, challeng-ing and achievable goals. Smart goal setting provides both a long-term vision, with short-term motivation. Every single business and individual needs goals in order to keep moving and growing. Achievers do this consistently and it doesn’t necessitate spending hours and hours outlining detailed plans.

In fact, getting overwhelmed by too many goals can conversely harm our chances of achiev-ing goals by demotivating us. Instead we can try starting with taking just 30 minutes to reflect on the previous year, and decide what we would like to see happen this year.

Establishing the goals is the first step. Once we have deter-mined what we want to achieve, we need to also look at and plan the path to achieving them and identifying any obstacles. Our speaker for the January First Friday Breakfast will be

addressing just this, and from an angle that most of us may not see on our own. The Cham-ber is excited to welcome Leisa Reid as our first 2018 First Friday Breakfast speaker. Leisa recently published her first book, and has over 20 years of experience in management, sales and execu-tive leadership.

Leisa explains that “our per-ceptions have the power to define how we experience the world around us. But we have the power to understand and develop our perceptions.” At the January First Friday Breakfast, Leisa will be giving an interac-tive experience where we will learn something about our-selves and take a glimpse into what could hold us back from achieving goals.

We hope that you will be able to join us on the 5th and start your 2018 off with a solid plan of action for success and fresh outlook on the possibilities.

Scripps Clinic Receives Medicare Advantage Quality Care Award

SAN DIEGO – Scripps Clinic Medical Group has been recognized for providing high-quality care to Medicare Advantage patients by the Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA) for the second con-secutive year. The state-wide nonprofit highlights high-value, integrated care that improves quality and affordability for patients.

IHA used 12 clinical qual-ity measures to collect perfor-mance data and assigned star ratings to 181 physician orga-nizations based on how well they provided recommended care in 2016 to more than 2 million California seniors and people with disabilities enrolled in Medicare Advan-tage health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Each year, IHA recognizes phy-sician organizations that achieve a 4.5- or 5-star rating.

Elizabeth “Betty” Bulen, founder of The Elizabeth Hospice, has died at 98.

The Founder of San Diego County’s longest-running nonprofit hospice program, Elizabeth “Betty” Bulen, has died. She was 98. It is especially fitting that the compassionate, expert care Betty helped to provide to thousands of terminally ill San Diegans for nearly 40 years, was provided to Betty at the end of her life, through The Elizabeth Hospice.

“Betty was the catalyst for a long tradition of caring for those facing a serious illness. Her aspiration to bring comfort to those nearing their end-of-life journey will live on as her philosophy and desire to help others continues to inspire the team of staff and volunteers here at The Elizabeth Hospice,” said Jan Jones, president and CEO of The Elizabeth Hospice.
