Good Luck and Goodbye

On Friday we say good bye to our current Year 11s as they

leave to start their GCSEs. From joining IGS as Year 7s

back in 2009 you have proved to be a hard working and

conscientious group. The exams are the final leg (for

some of you) on your journey with IGS. We know both

how hard you have worked in lessons and your revision,

and how challenging these next 5 weeks will be for you

—but we will be with you every step of the way.

Have confidence in yourself but remember, in the words

of a great man…

“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with

problems longer.”

Albert Einstein

Good luck—and here’s to celebrating with you in August!

We won’t skirt around the issue!

We may be entering the home run towards summer, but your uniform and your smartness still speaks

volumes about your pride in yourselves and your readiness to work.

One girl has already lost her licence to wear a skirt for the rest of this year and to be fair to her, and to avoid

more of you in trousers when you don’t want to be, we will be challenging too short skirts and issuing

uniform comments and detentions to those with skirts rolled up, held too high with a belt or just too short.

You know how to avoid the challenge!

Congratulations to both Benji Claydon (11PO) and Alex Henney (11ISR) who played for West Riding County FA in the Midland Counties League Cup against Birmingham FA on Sunday. Playing against a strong Birmingham side, West Riding overcame the disadvantage of playing at the opposition's home ground to come out 4-0 victors with Alex scoring to help the side through to lifting the cup. A successful season has seen the team win this cup and finish as runners-up in a league where they have played as far away as Hereford!

Good luck to our linguists who are taking part in The University of York’s virtual quiz based around the different stages of the Tour de France.

Bon chance to ‘Les Roulers Fous’ who are: Nathan Spiller (10VEB), Catherine Boyle (10ACD), Milly Horn (10AJH), Ethan Thompson (10VEB), Sarah Yorke (10ALS) and Laura King (10FV).

So far they have completed 3 of the 8 rounds.

Congratulations and good luck to Rachel Scott (7PDH) who will represent Ben Rhydding Under 12 Girls’ Hockey Team who have qualified for the National Finals in Cannock on Saturday 10th May.

This is a great achievement for Ben Rhydding, who qualified for the National Finals for the first time ever in 2013, and have once again qualified as North Champions in 2014. Rachel is delighted to be Ilkley Grammar’s representative in the squad this year.

Well done to our Year 10 boys’ cricket team who won their first match in the Yorkshire Cup on Tuesday. IGS beat Upper Wharfedale In the Leeds/Bradford regional 1st round of the Under 15 National Cup. The boys bowled out Upper Wharfedale for 49 runs in 12 overs. Will Rowe (10VEB) was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 8 runs. In reply IGS knocked off the total inside 5 overs with Dan Revis (10AJH) 30 not out and Sam Fox (10PPB) 18 not out. IGS are at home to Beckfoot in the next round. Congratulations also to our Year 7 cricketers who were victorious against Laisterdyke in their first match of the season.

For a growing number of people across the world, the horror of war is part of daily life.

The good news is that individuals, communities

and churches can make a real difference this

Christian Aid Week. Last year, a magnificent

20,000 churches across the country helped raise

£12m (€14.3m) for Christian Aid Week. Thanks to

these efforts, many more people can look forward

to a future free from poverty.

The Tour of Infinite Possibility Needs You!

‘The Big Wide’ by Hope and Social is the anthem for the Yorkshire Festival 2014, the cultural festival that will be running side by side with the Grand Depart (aka The Tour de France) in Yorkshire.

The song will be played throughout the festival by brass bands, bicycle orchestras, children’s groups and Hope and Social as part of this festival with their Tour of Infinite Possibility (TIP).

Hope and Social is a band everyone should know about. This year, they’re heading out on a Yorkshire-wide tour with a big difference - everyone’s invited. Yes, everyone. Firmly believing that anyone can play music, these big-hearted musicians are issuing an open invitation to join them as they march around Yorkshire rehearsing for the finale.

The Tour of Infinite Possibility will culminate with 12 gigs in 12 towns over just 4 days in June on their custom cycle powered stage.

They are trying to get 100's of people and groups along the route to join them and join their band. They’ll bring brass, bells and ukuleles. They’ll sing their hearts out, and they’ll stop for a chat wherever you are, as they march through Yorkshire to find hundreds of new recruits.

No-one is too young or too old to join in - they’ll sing with the WI, rock out with shoppers and beat the drums with the Cubs and the Brownies.

If you want to get involved and join the band visit their webpage www.hopeandsocial.com/tip for more information.
