Nell Bank is the opportunity for students to get to know each other beer and take part in problem solving exercises. The weather was favourable and once again Year 7 students thoroughly enjoyed their day of transion team building at the Nell Bank outdoor acvity centre. The scenario was a familiar one, but all students rose to the challenge of saving both themselves and the future of the Kingdom of Nellbania, an uncivilised island located in the south west corner of the Nellbanian sea miles from anywhere! To meet such a challenge successfully, small groups of students, mixed from a variety of feeder primary schools, had to ski down a glacier to feed the hungry frogs and bears, cross shark infested waters with minimal equipment to build their transport, navigate themselves through a dense forest with a limited supply of night vision goggles and retrieve food and water to other survivors sll on board HMS Nellie! Year 7 have made a fantasc start to the term and life in a new school. A 100% aendance rate over the three days at Nell Bank further indicates their enjoyment of the programme. It is hoped that the new friends that students have made over the past week will be friends for life and that the team building skills they have developed will now be transferred into the classroom. Many thanks to all the Nell Bank staff for looking aſter us so well once again! Year 7 2014 Facing global disaster, Year 7 save both themselves and the world!

A WEEK

I and G band visited the centre on Wednesday and Thursday, and

S Band are there today Friday 19th September.

The whole year group very much rose to the challenges , the weather stayed dry, and they all

had a great time. The aim of the day was for students to develop new friendships with others

from different feeder schools. Using their ICREST skills to the maximum students skied down

slopes in pairs, navigated their way around the centre blind fold, got extremely wet in the

water challenge and completed the famous obstacle course with the bread and chicken!

Basically a great time was had by all and congratulations to all students for their splendid

behaviour and participation.

This week Year 7 enjoyed their annual visit to Nell Bank Activity Centre as part of their Induction programme. Nell Bank is the opportunity for students to get to know each other better and take part in problem solving exercises. The weather was favourable and once again Year 7 students thoroughly enjoyed their day of transition team building at the Nell Bank outdoor activity centre.

The scenario was a familiar one, but all students rose to the challenge of saving both themselves and the future of the Kingdom of Nellbania, an uncivilised island located in the south west corner of the Nellbanian sea miles from anywhere! To meet such a challenge successfully, small groups of students, mixed from a variety of feeder primary schools, had to ski down a glacier to feed the hungry frogs and bears, cross shark infested waters with minimal equipment to build their transport, navigate themselves through a dense forest with a limited supply of night vision goggles and retrieve food and water to other survivors still on board HMS Nellie!

Year 7 have made a fantastic start to the term and life in a new school. A 100% attendance rate over the three days at Nell Bank further indicates their enjoyment of the programme. It is hoped that the new friends that students have made over the past week will be friends for life and that the team building skills they have developed will now be transferred into the classroom. Many thanks to all the Nell Bank staff for looking after us so well once again!

Bin It! Please use the bins provided for your litter, as the site was in a dreadful state on Thursday particularly on the bottom path coming up from Tesco. Please be responsible and ‘Bin it!’. Thank you.

Mr Calvert

Lost Property We know that with a new school year, new timetables and new subjects for some, remembering to not only bring everything with you to school on the right day can be a challenge at first, but also remembering to take it home or place it in your locker can be equally challenging! Please use your lockers to store your kit and ensure all their items are marked with your name. The lost property cannot be held forever. If named items are found an email will be sent to you letting you know you need to pick up your item from Lost Property (Key Stage 3 Hub). Un-named items will be kept for 2 weeks, after 2 weeks the lost property box will be cleared out. These items will not be disposed of until a further 2 weeks, but after that time items will be donated to charity. To clarify, you have a 4 week window to be reunited with your items, as soon as you lose something, head to Key Stage 3 Hub and begin the hunt to find it!

Open Day and Evening Our Open Day will be held on Thursday 2nd October. As in previous years the school closes for students at 1.15pm that day; buses will be available from that time for students to make their way home as usual. If you are helping as a guide or involved in activities during the event, thank you. Show our new students your Personal Best, make a good impression and be proud of your school.

Year 8 Girls Papilloma Vaccine The first injection for Year 8 girls is on Friday 10th October and will be held in C8. Consent forms have been handed out and must be returned by Wednesday 24th September.

Eat your Greens! It’s not only flowers that are part of our garden, we are also growing fruit and vegetables that are being used in the school kitchen...for your meals! You may have already enjoyed some of our onions, carrots, kale, turnips and even some swiss chard. Next time you are having lunch see Michael, our school chef, and ask him what he’s cooking up with our produce!

Chris Ryan Visit Former British Special Forces operative turned bestselling novelist, Chris Ryan, enthralled Year 10 students this week as he recounted events from his past. Amongst other things he talked about the rigorous procedure for being recruited into the SAS, a sky-dive that went badly wrong, how he became inspired to take up writing and even his school days (where he admitted he could have 'done better'!)

Chris also briefly touched upon his epic 200 mile escape and evasion quest during the Gulf War in 1991, where he eventually got to safety, but was badly dehydrated and lost 36lbs in body weight. This famous event is described fully in his novel, 'The One That Got Away.' At the end of the talk, students had the opportunity ask questions and look at his books. One big fan had even brought in a whole rucksack full of Chris's books to be signed.

Congratulations to Hannah Wellock (10BJS) and Nathan Foster (9MWC) who took part in the Yorkshire Youth League Fencing Competition in Hull on Sunday 14th September.

Hannah won a silver medal in the girls’ U14 epee event, and Nathan took bronze in the boy's’ U14 epee.

Good luck to Lucy Haines (11VEB) who is representing England in a Mountain Running event in Ireland on Friday 19th September.

Congratulations to Eliot Hutton (10AHF) and Helena Carslaw (10CT) whose World War One projects from our last academic year received commendations from the Young Historians Project. Mrs Goodyear submitted a number of students' work of high merit to the judges who, each year, award prizes for outstanding pieces of historical writing. Well done Eliot and Helena!

Well done to Dom Greenwood (11VEB) whose diving award achieved (mentioned in Headline before the holidays) has been recognised in SCUBA magazine SCUBA magazine is the publication for members of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) and is distributed to their membership worldwide .

You may have read about Emma Powell’s (9JP) climbing exploits last week. The photos below show you just what a category M9 climbing route, described as ‘vertical or steeper with sustained marginal or highly technical dry tooling; or horizontal and juggy for up to a few body lengths’, means to a climber!

Why should I follow the one way system on P floor in the new block? When English staff ask students to follow the one way system you sometimes look a little perplexed and ask why. Some of you try to keep ignoring it. 'But my classroom's just there,' you may say pointing a hand vaguely up the corridor. A few years ago we didn't have a one way system. It was awful. The new block can hold up to 1000 students. They used to converge on P Floor walking both ways and a lot of students used to get hurt in the crush. When one student had been slammed into some lockers for the fourth time that week we decided to change things. That's when the one way system arrived. It applies to all students from Year 7 to Year 13. So please follow it- it's for your safety.

A handy guide to revision Introduction Revision is a key part of success. You learn things, but then unless you use the information you have learned, you will start to forget again. If you have a test or exam which tests your understanding of

the learning, you

will need to revise the work.

During the next few weeks we

will introduce you to a range of

different techniques. Try each

technique and see if it works

for you. At the end of the series, we’ll send you the whole pack so you can save it as an iBook.

Techniques There are lots of techniques to use which will help you revise. A combination is best as different techniques are best for different types of revision. To store information you need to move it from short term to long term memory. Scientists have found that there are

4 main ways of doing this. Chunking—taking small bits and learning these a bit at a time before piecing it all together Repetition (speaks for itself really, speaks for itself really, speaks …… !) Finding patterns—linking together ideas so you can recall it more easily Linking to Strong stimuli—using pictures, colour, stories, etc.

Different revision techniques, are particularly good for each of these.

1. Concept maps (or Mind maps)

Storage method used Patterns Strong stimuli

When might you use it? When you need to summa-rise and review a topic.

What to do? Write important keywords and link them together with a sentence to explain their relationship along an arrow. Use images and as much colour as possible on your maps.

Handy hint:

Scan your map into your iPad, phone, computer etc. and set it

as the desktop background for a while.

Career of the Week: Air Cabin Crew The Work: This is split into 3 parts: before the flight, during the flight and at the end of the flight. Before: attend meeting about flight and schedule, check supplies on plane, greet passengers and

demonstrate emergency equipment and procedures. During: make sure passengers are comfortable, serve food and drinks and sell duty free items and

make announcements to reassure passengers in the event of an emergency After: make sure passengers leave the plane safely, write a flight report including unusual incidents

and add up and record food and drink orders, sales etc. Between flights you may have time to relax and explore the destination you have flown to.

Entry Requirements: Have an interest in world travel, be very good at customer care, be highly sociable and good at carrying out a variety of tasks under time pressure. Many of the leading airlines such as British Airways, Emirates, Virgin Atlantic etc. hold assessment days when many Air Cabin Crew staff are recruited. These employers are looking for professional people with a positive outlook and an empathetic nature. Colleges offer courses for school leavers e.g. Craven College International travel & Tourism level 3 Diploma which may help gain access to Air Cabin Crew posts. Airlines tend to have specific recruitment criteria e.g. you are likely to need to be over 21 and within specified height and weight parameters. Often airlines stipulate that they don’t want cabin crew to have visible tattoos.

Training: Most training is done in-house. Larger airlines will train their cabin crew over a 6 or 7 week period often in state of the art training facilities. There is a big focus on safety and emergency procedures, first aid, security and customer service.

Pay: The salary for a cabin crew member is upwards of £16K depending on the airline. Beyond the basic salary cabin crew might also get flight pay which is calculated according to time spent away from home. It is usual for cabin crew to have their overnight accommodation paid for by the airline and for meals and uniform to be provided. (These figures are intended as a guideline only).

Rebecca Cole ‘When I left IGS in 2010 I went to the Aviation Academy at Leeds/Bradford airport and studied for a 2 year BTEC National Diploma in Aviation Operations. I worked really hard and came out with an overall distinction grade. The course gave me an insight into all aspects of aviation and I was sure I wanted to focus on a career in cabin crew. When I finished my BTEC course I went on to study a 6 month City & Guilds Diploma in air cabin crew, again at the Aviation Academy through Craven College (because I was still only 17 and had to be 18 to be cabin crew).

I would definitely recommend enrolling for the Aviation Academy if you’re interested in a career in Aviation; all of the tutors have worked in the industry in various fields and they're all very experienced. The Academy also has excellent links with Jet2.com for ground staff and cabin crew job opportunities for students who are interested in pursuing a career with them.

Whilst studying my Diploma on the Air Cabin Crew course I applied for Monarch Airlines as cabin crew, and was offered a position! After 6 weeks of intense training I got my wings and I operated short haul routes out of Leeds/Bradford.

I loved working for Monarch but I had always wanted to fly for a long haul airline, and when British Airways started recruiting earlier this year I sent an application in, and was very lucky to be offered a job with them. I have just completed my 7 week training course and I have my British Airways wings; I get to travel the world and do the job that I love. I’ve been in Japan this week!’
