New Faces Many of you will have new teachers and new tutors this year. Have a look at our new faces for new names on your timetable. We also welcome Mrs Marklew who will be working as a Maths teacher. We have two new Learning Support Assistants that you may see in your lessons: Mrs Hepworth and Mrs Archer. Try and remember what it is like to be new to school — a friendly face and a smile in the corridor can go a long way! I’m sure you all join us in welcoming them to team IGS.

Congratulations to 6 of our dancers who following the Lord of the Flies Workshop last year have been selected for further auditions. The Phoenix Dance Theatre Company came into school last year looking for talent to take part in the Matthew Vaughan production that will be performed at the Alhambra. Good luck and well done to Andrew Rabbage (13RN), Matthew Hodson (8DSF), Harry Barker (9JRW), Sam Boulton (9JRW) Jude Brogden (8DSF) and Patrick Campbell (9JP).

Well done and thank you to last year’s Year 10 students who walked the Wharfe as part of their Challenge and Celebration Week before the summer holidays. They walked from school to the quaker meeting house, Addingham and onwards to Bolton Abbey road and back. A total of 16.5km. The Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream company met the weary walkers at the half way point, supplying them which much anticipated refreshments, and kindly donated 20% of their takings to the fundraising event. The event raised a tremendous £535 for St John Ambulance.

Well done to Emma Powell (9JP) who has been busy in the holiday with her climbing endeavours. Emma has completed her first M9 (a climbing route described as ‘vertical or steeper with sustained marginal or highly technical dry tooling; or horizontal and juggy for up to a few body lengths’ for those of us not in the know!), which is a massive achievement and she is the youngest person in the UK to achieve this.

Congratulations to Dominic Coy (8SP) who competed Tri Star 2 boys’ category in the British Triathlon Inter Regional Championships at Holme Pierrepoint in Nottingham during the summer holidays. Dominic was representing the Yorkshire team and performed strongly throughout the race finished 12th individually and the team came home in 4th position.

Year 10 students—Chris Ryan Visit As part of our links with the Ilkley Literature Festival, IGS is proud to host ex- SAS soldier and author Chris Ryan. He will be coming to talk to Year 10 next Wednesday afternoon about some of his experiences and about how he got into writing. Chris Ryan was born in 1961 in a village near Newcastle. In 1984 he joined the SAS. Less than a week after the outbreak of the last Gulf War, Ryan and 7 fellow SAS soldiers were sent on a mission to locate and destroy Saddam Hussein's mobile Scud missile launches but it ended in catastrophic failure with three men dead and four captured and tortured by the Iraqis. Chris Ryan was the one who got away and wrote about his experiences in the bestseller, The One That Got Away. Ryan left the SAS in 1994 and is now the author of many bestselling thrillers for adults and young people and has presented a number of TV programmes and lectures in business motivation and security.

At the end of his presentation you will have the opportunity to ask questions and buy some of his books. Some of the titles suitable for teenagers are:

Art Students in KS3, KS4 and KS5 Could all students studying Art please ensure that they have protective clothing for messy activities in lessons. This could be an apron or old shirt/t shirt which will go over uniform. We do not have aprons for loan and the nature of some activities such as painting, print or clay work can cause stains or marks on school uniform. As we have limited storage space students need to keep their apron/old shirt in their locker and bring it with them to lessons.

Belgium and Munich Trip Meetings Letters will be going home to parents and carers which will include details of the parents meetings for the Belgium Trip. They meetings will be held on: Tuesday 16th September Tuesday 23rd September Belgium parents’ evening Munich parents’ evening Both of these informative meetings will be held in B Hall starting at 6.30pm and will last an hour. The meetings will allow your parents/carers to be informed of the trips and ask any questions they may have.

KS3 Homework Club The homework Club will run every day in K2 (and K4 as an over-spill room) from 12.25pm prompt to 12.55pm. The clubs will be run by Mrs Lowe and Mrs Archer.

Would you like to perform some Shakespeare at The Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds? The Drama department are taking part in the UK’s largest youth theatre festival – the Shakespeare Schools Festival.
