Year 7 Public Speaking Competition...you were fantastic!

Well done to our Year 7 orators who took part in the Year 7 Public Speaking Competition on Monday. The standard was incredibly high, and in the words of Judge, Mrs Jones, ‘tough to call.’.

Subjects ranged from ‘Are pop stars good role models?’ to the rather apt ‘What advice would you give to the new Headteacher?’. The teams consisted of:

Pastor Ivan Lugolobi We welcomed Pastor Ivan again into to school this week; he joined a Year 8 assembly and enjoyed 7MPC’s Citizenship lesson with Mr Stonehouse. Ilkley Grammar School has a growing association with The Revival Centre, Matugga, Uganda, a school and orphanage north of Kampala ran by Pastor Ivan who has visited us most years in the last ten or so; a number of our students have also gone out to Matugga to support their work on the ground.

The secondary school and vocational skills centre at Revival aim to give all students a package of academic qualifications and skills that will enable them to get a good job to support themselves and their families or (given financial support) to move into higher education.

2014 Exams...over! Today, 13th June, sees the final exam for our Year 11 students, and I’m sure they are all breathing a huge sigh of relief. We wish them the best of luck and look forward to sharing their success in August. Next Friday, 20th June, is their Summer Ball at the Craigland’s, a chance to celebrate and kick back.

Exams can be a stressful time for all involved and can mean additional room changes, as well as heeding silence notices. You have all coped admirably with this...well done!

Super Tutor Group Update

It’s that time of year again and the race for Super Tutor Group is on! The winners will enjoy an afternoon at the Lido or Shipley Bowl (although last year’s Year 10 took the option of the Lido as well as the weather was so nice!) The cut off for collation and counting of points and certificates is Friday 11th June. So aim high, go for gold, silver, bronze or even platinum and help secure your tutor group as Super Tutor group for 2014.

Congratulations to our U13 rounders team who were in action against Oakbank on Monday. They played fantastically well. As they prepared themselves for their last match in the Bradford League, they knew what they needed to do in order to qualify for the League Finals and a lunchtime session alongside a change of tactics gave them a strong determination to carry out the plan. They all rose to the challenge superbly! They needed lots of rounders; they batted strongly and took their chances well - it paid off securing 10.5 rounders. They needed to stop the other team scoring as many rounders; 1st ball - caught out, 3rd ball - stumped out, 6th ball - caught out, and so it continued! The tactics worked, the team were focused, with catches galore, they provided an emphatic display of fielding skills and finished the game with their opponents all out with only a half rounder scored. Job done! We just need to hope our rounder difference overall is now good enough to get us through...whatever happens, the team cannot be faulted for enthusiasm, commitment and skill. Lighting a Beacon Thirty six young engineers from Rossett, Skipton and IGS had a glimpse of the future when taking part in the Institute of Engineering and Technology Challenge at Ermysted’s Grammar School on Wednesday June 11th . Ilkley Grammar School was ably represented by:

Students were challenged to build a warning beacon conveying information useful to cyclists about the road or weather conditions ahead. They were asked to design and build a circuit from electronic components which had to be paid for out of a fixed budget. Several completely new skills had to be mastered quickly, as well as the traditional ones of teamwork, time keeping and detailed planning. The circuit was to be housed inside a plastic casing of the team’s own design. For many of us, students and teachers alike, the most exciting moment was when these structures began to appear on the 3D printers – this was the first time any of us had ever seen them working in ‘real life’.

The final product was presented to the expert audience (and the rest of us!) in a sales pitch. Despite the genuine toughness of the challenge all the teams managed to complete the task, but our White Team above were chosen as the winners because

of their intricate and imaginative solution and they have received as prizes, vouchers for a 1 hour taster session, including bike and helmet hire, at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester.

Well done and thank you to all twelve of the students for their ingenuity, patience, enthusiasm and creativity and, it goes almost without saying, for their impeccable manners and exemplary behaviour. Few would disagree that our country is going to need lots of people with skills in Science, Design and Technology in the coming decades. The teams told me that their existing interest in Engineering as a career had been increased further by this experience and this, for me, rounded off a very successful day.

Summer of Sport The FIFA World Cup 12th June—13th July The 20th FIFA World Cup, hosted by Brazil for a second time, previous being in 1950, started yesterday. Brazil was elected unchallenged as host nation in 2007 after the international football federation, FIFA, decreed that the tournament would be staged in South America for the first time since 1978 in Argentina, and the fifth time overall.

The national teams of 31 countries advanced through qualification competitions that began in June 2011 to participate with the host nation Brazil in the final tournament. A total of 64 matches are to be played in twelve cities across Brazil in either new or redeveloped stadiums, with the tournament beginning with a group stage. For the first time at a World Cup Finals, the matches will use goal-line technology. Spain is the defending champion, having defeated the Netherlands 1–0 in the 2010 World Cup final, in South Africa, to win its first World title. Commonwealth Games 23rd July—3rd August The 2014 Commonwealth Games, officially the XX Commonwealth Games, will be held in Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire and Angus, Scotland, over 11 days of competition The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games promise to be the best Commonwealth Games ever. 6,500 athletes and officials from 71 nations and territories will compete in 17 sports over 11 days. From the precision of lawn bowls to the exciting combat of wrestling and judo, from the high adrenaline of track events to the grace and beauty of gymnastics, 2014 in Glasgow will be the stage for a fantastic summer of sport, as well as a range of cultural and arts events open to everyone.
