The Indonesian Red Cross Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI), with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), are continuing to monitor and respond to the situation with local and national resources. A request to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is being prepared to scale up PMI’s relief efforts. The situation A 6.4 magnitude earthquake has struck off Lombok, province of West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, at 05:47h local time, on Sunday 29 July 2018, followed by multiple aftershocks at time of reporting. The earthquake affected the three districts of North Lombok, East Lombok and West Lombok, with 14 casualties reported to date and more than 105 people injured, damaging many buildings and homes and resulting in more than 4,000 people being evacuated (assessment is underway and fixed figures will be shared soon). The quake also impacted Mount Rinjani national park, where a total of 820 mountain climbers 617 foreigners and 203 locals were within the area of Rinjani with 554 people evacuated and the rest currently still under evacuation process. Information from the national disaster management agency (BNPB) on damage and number of people/houses affected in Lombok are tabulated below. Indonesia: Earthquake in Nusa Tenggara Barat

BNPB and the regional disaster management agency (BPBD) are coordinating the response and collating information on the earthquake’s impact. Search, rescue and retrieval efforts continue, with hundreds of villagers and multi-agency teams, including personnel from Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI), national and local government agencies involved. Assessments as well as delivery of immediate assistance which includes first aid and basic medical services are also being undertaken.

Red Cross and Red Crescent action PMI has been on the ground from the onset, with the following mobilized as of 30 July to support search, rescue and retrieval efforts, delivery of immediate assistance, undertake rapid assessments, field kitchens to provide those affected with hot meals, and delivery of clean water. Details of the mobilization are tabulated below.

The items above were dispatched from PMI’s regional warehouses in Gresik and Serang. In addition, PMI Bali, the neighbouring chapter is supporting the response by delivering 1,000 mattresses, 1,500 blankets and 100 family tents. The National Society is also mobilizing seven ambulances (with medical crew), as well as two operational vehicles (for evacuation) from its base units in Lombok. The IFRC Country Cluster Support Team (CCST) in Jakarta is providing technical and coordination support to PMI with two personnel alongside the PMI headquarters team; one to work closely with PMI on needs assessment and the other to support communications and media relations needs. The CCST is also set to provide financial support to enable the mobilization of personnel and supplies by PMI , including the preparation of an emergency plan of action to access funds from the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF). A coordination meeting hosted by PMI was held on 30 July, including representatives from IFRC, ICRC and partner national societies such as the American, Australian and Japanese Red Cross. PMI Lombok chapter coordinated closely with local government and other stakeholders regularly on the ground and consolidate assessment report and response strategy and identify the gaps. Furthermore, the CCST continues to share information on PMI’s response with the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT). The CCST is also engaging with the Ministry of Social Affairs (MOSA), the national shelter cluster lead, to determine whether support is required for cluster coordination.
