Improved HGU-56/P

Rotary Wing Helmet

Upgrades to the Industry-Leading

Impact Protection Platform

Improvements: Sought for industry-leading HGU-56/P Rotary

Wing Helmet in support of U.S. Army Air

Soldier Program objectives

Key Objectives: To reduce the weight and bulk of all aircrew

flight equipment due to extended mission

requirements. Also to improve the field of view.

Provisions: To retrofit enhanced capabilities to existing

HGU-56/P helmets

Maintain or Improve: The best-in-class blunt impact protection

required for rotary wing aircrew in combat and

non-combat conditions

Gentex has applied their unique capabilities in human

factors engineering, computer-aided design, and materials

science to deliver key improvements to the HGU-56/P:

Increased Field-Of-View:

3° improvement raises situational awareness during

rotary-wing operations

New, Light-Weight Retention System:

Contributes to a 50-gram reduction in total head

borne weight

Enhanced Stability:

Platform reliably maintains position of helmet-

mounted optical equipment such as HMDs and NVGs

Improved Comfort:

Updated retention and new comfort liner extend

mission endurance

Improved HGU-56/P Rotary Wing Helmet Key Product Benefits

Helmet shell, visor housing, visors, MFS mounting

hardware, ear-cups, communications components and

all relevant equipment compatibility remain unchanged.

Energy Attenuating Liner (EAL)

Articulating Nape Pad

Chinstrap System

Comfort Liner

Maxillofacial Shield (MFS)

Earcup Fastener

Blown-Air Adapter Removed

Improved HGU-56/P Rotary Wing Helmet Upgraded System Components

8

Increases field-of-view by shifting head location forward inside

of helmet shell while meeting required impact protection levels.

Improved HGU-56/P Rotary Wing Helmet

Rear Liner Thickness: Increased to accommodate forward head shift

Plenum / Blown-Air Adapter: Features removed

Frontal Thickness: Reduced to increase field-of-view while

maintaining front-impact protection

9

New Energy Attenuating Liner (EAL)

Existing Retention Issues:

High weight, poor stability, lack of comfort

Improved HGU-56/P Rotary Wing Helmet

Horizontal Force:

Captures cleft area of chin

and confers lateral stability

Articulating Nape Pad:

Confers stability and comfort

Pull Strap:

To optimize fit

Ear-cups:

Fasten directly to helmet shell

Vertical Force Line:

Independently constrains helmet

roll

New Retention System

10

New Comfort Liner:

Combines lightweight materials,

thermoplastic layers and 3D mesh

materials for breathability, comfort, and

impact protection

Blown-Air Adapter:

Removed from manufacturing process to

reduce weight and bulk

Ear-cup Fastener:

Velcro pad holds ear-cup directly against

helmet shell

Updated Maxillofacial Shield

Accommodates the forward head shift to

maintain proper facial relief; uses existing

mounting hardware

Improved HGU-56/P Rotary Wing Helmet Other New & Modified Components

11

The HGU-56/P improvements can be retrofit to existing helmet systems for

less than half the price of a new helmet. The Retrofit Kit includes:

Energy Attenuating Liner (EAL)

Retention Assembly

Comfort Liner

Ear-cup Fastener Assembly

Maxillofacial Shield (if desired)

Improved HGU-56/P Rotary Wing Helmet

Retrofitted shells will have 3 legacy holes drilled

(2 retention screws and blown-air adapter hole)

Newly manufactured shells will still have the blown-air

adapter location feature, but the hole will never be drilled

Retrofitted helmets will be functionally equivalent to

newly manufactured helmets, except that:

12

Removal of communications components and dual

visor kit is prudent to avoid damage during the

retrofit procedure:

Remove comfort liner

Remove energy attenuating liner

Remove retention assembly and ear-cups

Remove blown-air adapter (if present)

Note:

Detailed tear-down and build-up procedures will

be provided with all retrofit kits and to all qualified

personnel.

Retrofit Kit Requirements (Tear-Down)

13

Drill 4 holes into lower portion of ear-

dome area (2 per side)

Insert new energy attenuating liner

Install ear-cup fasteners to ear-dome area

Install new retention assembly

Fasten ear-cups

Insert new comfort liner

Key improvements are now available for the Gentex HGU-56/P Rotary Wing

Helmet System, including:

Increased field-of-view

Reduced weight

Improved stability and comfort

Improved HGU-56/P Rotary Wing Helmet

Primary benefits are enhanced situational awareness

and mission endurance all rotary wing aircrew.

Existing HGU-56/P helmets can be retrofit cost

effectively to add these key benefits to the industry

leading rotary wing helmet system.
