While your intentions might be good, giving up things you enjoy also has negative consequences. The stress of intense caregiving can put your physical and mental health at risk now and leave you vulnerable when your role as caregiver is over. When deciding what activities to give up to be a caregiver, don’t just think about your life situation now but also ask yourself the question, “What will I do when I am no longer needed as a caregiver?” I have been spending a lot of time thinking about what a caregiver’s life is like when caregiving ends. The death of my father left my mom with an entirely new life ahead of her. She went from having her days filled with caring for my dad to a world in which she lives alone. For several years she put her activities on hold and put Dad’s needs first. During that time, I encouraged Mom to keep doing some of those things she really loved, even if it was infrequently. At the time, my hope was to keep her healthier and happier by designating time out of the week for herself. But now I see that keeping active in those activities was important in another way, too. Finding a new routine for her life now is a little easier because she remained involved with those activities. Had she given up everything, her whole identity would be lost now.No matter what, life after caregiving will be a transition and will be a difficult adjustment. Here are some points to consider to help you when your job as caregiver has ended.

• Begin thinking about your future when you are still a caregiver. Having some long-term dreams and goals will make this transitional time easier.

• Time helps – while you will never forget your loved one, as time passes it will become easier to find your way in life without that person.

• Accept and express your feelings of loss, loneliness and whatever else you may be feeling – keep attending your caregiver support group, join a grief support group or find a trusted friend to share with. Seek help from a counselor if your grief leaves you overwhelmed by feelings of depression or hopelessness.

• Reconnect with things and people you used to be involved with.

• Look for new challenges – a new job, volunteer work or planning a trip somewhere you’ve always wanted to go will help you focus on positive things.

• Keep busy, but allow for quiet times to grieve. Reflect on what you’ve been through, be proud of the good work you did for your loved one and let go of any guilt you may feel.

• Change is the name of the game – reshaping your life and creating a “new normal” is what you need to do, but it is not done overnight. Give yourself time to find your way.

Taking care of a loved one takes a lot of time and energy. Your own needs move lower on the priority list as you spend more time caring for your loved one. You start saying no to the weekly coffee clutch, decrease the number of days you participate in volunteer or paid work, leave your favorite hobbies on the shelf and slow down your travel plans. As your loved one needs more and more assistance it is tempting to just drop out of everything so you can be there for the person as much as possible.

Even if you don’t want to think about the death of your loved one, start creating a plan for what your life will be like after caregiving has ended. It isn’t selfish to look at the future in which your caregiving role is over; it is simply practical and healthy. If you are able, involve your loved one in this discussion as they most likely want you to be happy. What is the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP)?The Senior FMNP offers eligible low-income seniors (age 60 & older) the opportunity to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs from certified farmers. The goals of the Senior FMNP are:

• To provide fresh, nutritious, unprepared fruits, vegetables and herbs from farmers’ markets and roadside stands to low income seniors.

• To increase the consumption of agricultural commodities by expanding or aiding the expansion of farmers’ markets and roadside stands.

Who is Eligible? Any resident of the county in which the voucher is being distributed (either Langlade, Lincoln, or Wood), is a senior age 60 or above, or Native American age 55 years or above, and has a monthly household income that meets program eligibility guidelines (specific information will be available soon).

How Does the Program Work? Enrolled seniors will receive vouchers for the household. These vouchers may be used to purchase locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs at approved farmers’ markets or roadside stands. These vouchers are good until October 31, 2019.

How Do I Get These Vouchers? Distribution sites are listed on page 9. The number of vouchers is limited, and will be distributed on a first come – first served basis. Applicants may be required to provide proof of age and household income.

How Do I Get Vouchers If I Can’t Come to a Distribution Site? If you are homebound, or unable to get to a distribution site due to a disability, you may send a signed statement with your authorized

representative stating this person has been designated to apply for certification on your behalf or request a standard proxy form from the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin. Your representative will be required to provide information regarding your date of birth, address, phone number, and your income.

NUTRITIONNutrition Program Information

COMMUNITY CONGREGATE SENIOR DININGWho is eligible?Anyone age 60 or older and their spouse . A disabled individual who resides at home with an eligible older individual who participates in the program .A person with a disability, under age 60, who resides in senior housing where Senior Dining is provided . (Includes: Huntington, Riverview Towers, Jenny Towers, Cedar Rail, Parkview Marshfield)

Suggested Contribution: $3.75 per meal (Full cost of a meal is $9 .30 .)Your contribution is very important to continued success of this Nutrition Program . We rely on participant contributions to cover about 30 percent of our program costs . Some program costs are covered by local, state & federal grant dollars . Al Habel, a long-time volunteer for the ADRC-CW, passed away this past January at the age of 101 . We would like to honor Al for the many years of volunteer service he gave to the nutrition program in Wisconsin Rapids .

When Al retired, he wanted to remain active and so began his second career of volunteering in the community . Our Meals on Wheels program was one of the fortunate recipients . Al and his wife, Kate, delivered meals for 16 years, logged 3,775 volunteer hours, and delivered 9,696 meals to homebound participants in the Wisconsin Rapids area . Al and Kate were very proud of their dedication to our program .

When Kate passed away, and Al was no longer able to drive, he found another way to volunteer for the nutrition program . Al would come in with his accordion and entertain the congregate diners at the Centralia Center Dining Site . He loved to play and was so proud to share his musical talent with others .

Because of Al’s many volunteer contributions to the community, he was honored in 2011 with the Milwaukee Brewers Community Achievers Award . He threw out the first pitch at the game and had his picture and volunteer contributions shown on the giant scoreboard . What a highlight for Al, his family, and friends .

Al made a truly remarkable impact on the lives of senior citizens in the Wisconsin Rapids area throughout his many years of service to our nutrition program . The ADRC-CW is very grateful for his dedication and service .

In a culture with a strong family orientated mindset and a strong urge to stick with tradition is expected, it is no surprise that Hmong children are expected to provide the long-term care needs for their aging parents. By tradition, the Hmong maintain tight family bonds based on interdependence rather than independence. As a result, multiple generations frequently choose to live in the same household for reasons of social and financial support. In this way, families do not have to depend on outsiders for the care of family members. The sons and daughters-in-law are expected to take care of elderly parents when they become ill. Traditionally, Hmong daughters do not directly take care of their parents once they are married. Once she is married, she is no longer part of the family. She is responsible for taking care of her in-laws and the new family.

Caregiving and Hmong TraditionsBy Pa Thao, Quality Manager

Although, as a Hmong daughter, it was always hard for me to accept this tradition. It was especially hard when my mother became ill. My mother was diagnosed with late-stage hepatitis C liver cancer in January 2013 and passed away in July that same year.

The patriarchal structure of Hmong households plays a significant role in how gender roles are specified for both men and women. In the culture, as mentioned, the sons will take care of the parents as daughters marry and live with their husband’s family. Religion also plays a role. The sons carry on the family name, and because of that, only they can take care of the parent’s spiritual needs after death. The daughter, since she is no longer part of the family, cannot worship or meet the needs of her parents’ spirits after death.

Today, Hmong in the United States are given a life that is very different from the one for which their parents were prepared while growing up in the mountains of Laos. The different perspective of gender roles in the United States has paved a road for the younger Hmong generation to seek out opportunities beyond traditional expectations. When my husband and I got married, we had to move to wherever our jobs took us. We ended up in Wausau, thereby living close to my family. Our decision to move to Wausau caused two things: friction in my husband’s family, eventually they came to an understanding, and the breaking of traditional roles. My close relationship with my mother led me to become one of her caregivers when she became ill.

The decision for me to have a say in my mother’s care may have been seen as, or may have even created, controversy among traditional Hmong families as they saw us as stepping outside of our gender boundaries. Having an understanding that life here in the United States is different than what it was in Laos, I also had an understanding of how difficult it is to be a caregiver. I couldn’t even begin to imagine how overwhelming it would have been for my brother to be given that sole responsibility of taking care of our mother. Having seen how much other families struggled, I understood the affect caregiving can have on the person - physically, financially, and emotionally. Even though my brother was obligated to care for our mother, he knew he couldn’t do it alone and, although he knew it was wrong within our culture, he agreed to let me be a caregiver.

Traditional Hmong families maintain strict male and female roles to preserve the continuation and practice of Hmong cultural values. From childhood to old age, Hmong men assume many superior roles and are perceived by family and society to be the breadwinners, protectors, leaders, and pillars of the family. In addition to being perceived as important and intelligent, male children receive special attention, love, care, training in hunting and leadership, and are viewed as the eventual pillars of the family. Many fear that the Hmong culture will be forgotten and lost as younger generations become

acculturated into mainstream U.S. culture, changing the composition of family households and gender expectations. Yes, it may seem like that is exactly what our family was doing. However, as Hmong, we value collectivism, which is a strong value in our culture. Collectivism is structured in the clan structure and for most Hmong, growing up within a clan allowed them to develop a strong sense of belonging. The Hmong culture places importance on people acting responsibly towards the family; everyone working for the benefit of the family, clan, and society. Including me in the decision-making and the care for my mother, was our family protecting the value of collectivism within our culture.

Working together with my brother and sister-in-law to care for my mother definitely benefited not only us but her as well. Although caregiving is hard and difficult, the rewards outweigh the negatives.

My role as a caregiver offered me the opportunity to spend more time with my mother. It created moments for more talks, increased intimacy, and repaired our relationship. I got to understand what she really wanted as we discussed future goals and expectations. The opportunity also gave me a sense of accomplishment. I felt good about being there in meaningful ways for my mother.

The direct involvement also helped me feel I did all I possibly could for my mother and, after she had passed away, I didn’t have any regrets about things I did not do. Above all, being a member of the caregiving team with others brings you closer. Personal highlights with family members can result in time together, exchanging stories and feelings, and being there to emotionally and physically support each other and a loved one. Thanks to the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin and the Family Care program, I was given resources for outside supports, such as support groups and online chat rooms on caregiver websites. Bonding with someone who understands what you are going through because they have been there creates a powerful connection. The empathy and support are born from a shared personal experience that can help strengthen you at times of self-doubt, isolation, or loneliness.

Since his mid-to-late 30s, Tim religiously filled the coffee pot every night before bed, to wake every morning to the smooth, rich scent of black coffee brewing in the kitchen. Even on the most sleepless of nights, the slightest smell of coffee seemed to somehow push the brain to an “alert” mode, in hopes that the day would start off a productive one. It wasn’t until has mid 70’s that Tim started recognizing a change. Suddenly, the coffee that was prepared each morning for the last 35 years, didn’t smell like the coffee that he used to remember, and it certainly was not as satisfying. Was he doing something different? Making a pot of coffee surely wasn’t that involved! No one else seemed to notice. Tim began to wonder if his sense of smell and taste had suddenly changed.

Did you know that your sense of smell is closely associated with your sense of taste? Like Tim, if you can’t smell your favorite cup of coffee brewing in the morning, likely the taste will not be the same either. This is also true for the foods that we eat. Unfortunately, when we’ve noticed a change in our sense of smell and taste, suddenly our most favorite foods taste bland, making them much more difficult to eat (let alone enjoy!). As we age, this can become much more harmful to our health. When foods aren’t quite as satisfying as they once were, it can be hard to make sure that we are getting the nutrients we need to stay healthy. In fact, because foods taste bland, we often compensate by using excess salt or sugar to improve the taste, ultimately increasing our risk for developing other health conditions such as high blood pressure. According to Mayo Clinic, although we may start to notice some changes in our taste and smell as we age, aging isn’t the only culprit. Taste and smell are affected by other factors too, some temporary, while others maybe more long term. Some of the temporary factors include:• Certain medications that you may be taking. Always

be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if you are on a medication that might be causing some changes related to your senses.

• The common cold or flu. We all can remember a time when our taste buds were not the same, simply because of a stuffy nose or congestion.

• Nasal and sinus problems, such as allergies.

• Polyps in the nose or sinuses• Dental problems• Cigarette smokingA loss of taste and smell can also indicate much more significant health issues as well, so consulting with your doctor would be a great first step. The good news: If you’ve noticed changes in the taste and smell of food, there are a variety of things to consider. • Make your plate a rainbow of colors. Adding a

variety of colors to your plate can make it much more appealing. Make a large salad, with lots of toppings: tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers. Add a bright red slice of tomato with some crisp lettuce to your hamburger or try preparing some kabobs for the grill, incorporating pineapple, red pepper, green pepper, and chicken.

• Use a variety of seasonings/spices to flavor dishes: sage, thyme, or rosemary.

• Need a little zing? Add spicy mustard, hot pepper, onions, garlic or ginger.

• Incorporate a variety of textures. Losing your sense of smell and taste can be really devastating. Food no longer tastes the same, and for many of us, food has many emotional connections as well. If you’ve noticed a change in the way you smell/taste food, be sure to talk with your physician. There are many reasons why this happens, and for some of us, it could be a straightforward fix.

The AARP Smart Driver Course will be offered to local residents age 55 and older. The course will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The class will be held at the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin, 2600 Stewart Ave, Suite 25, Wausau, WI.

The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members (check payable to AARP) or cash. Payment is due on the day of the class. Please arrive by 8:45 a.m. to complete paperwork, and also bring your driver’s license, AARP card, and a sack lunch to class.

The AARP Smart Driver Course can help you learn how to avoid driving hazards and may qualify you for an auto insurance discount in most states—consult with your insurance agent. The Tomahawk Community Bank learned of the need for volunteer Meals on Wheels drivers and decided to adopt a route and deliver meals once a week. One staff member was already volunteering for a route during her lunch break. We are pleased to announce ten more employees are now signed up and trained!

Everyone was trained on Friday, February 1st and started driving the route on Tuesday, February 5th.

The excitement the employees showed for getting involved and their understanding of the impact Meals on Wheels has in the community is truly inspiring!

The CEO agreed to talk to the Merrill branch about getting involved in Merrill (our fingers are crossed!).

If you know of a group that would like to get involved with the Meals on Wheels program in your community by adopting a route, please encourage them to contact the ADRC-CW, 888-486-9545. Taking on a route with a group of friends, co-workers, or parishioners is a great help to the organization and an easier way to distribute the work. A group can easily share a route once a month or once a week. It is a great way to get a group involved and makes an enormous impact on our communities.

Learning to Live WellBy Ciara Schultz, Community Health Educator

So, your doctor says it’s time to take better care of yourself. Eat healthier. Get more sleep. Exercise more often. And the response you hear in your head is, “I know, I know!” The truth is, we all know what we need to do to be healthy. We all know what it takes. The challenging part is realistically fitting it into our lives. Everyone has these challenges, but those of us living with a chronic health condition like arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, or depression, makes these challenges greater.

A chronic condition brings troubling symptoms, painful emotions, and complex changes to our lives. The thought of implementing a new, healthy change can feel like a steep mountain to climb. I hope to ease your initial fears by letting you know it is possible. Being healthy while living with a chronic condition is POSSIBLE! The first, and most challenging, step is to believe it. There is no magic pill or miraculous cure that will take away this condition. There may be treatments a doctor can provide that help ease symptoms, or keep them in check, but there isn’t anything that will take you back to your previous life. Living with a chronic condition forces you to make changes. It transitions you into a new phase, a new normal of your life. You are in control of how that transition plays out. Will you resist it? Will you let negative emotions lead the way? Or will you face it? Will you acknowledge your part in making this life transition as positive as possible?

Meet Vicki:Vicki works part-time at a job she loves, is an occasional volunteer at a local school, and has the greenest thumb in town. Vicki lives with a lung disease that affects her breathing and her ability to do tasks for long periods. She most recently was diagnosed with chronic heart failure, which has not

only changed her stamina, but her ability to stay positive emotionally and enjoy her normal activities. For some time, she was hesitant to tell anyone, even her husband, about her fears and ongoing sadness. Her emotions were starting to make her symptoms worse and for her, what used to be an easy walk to the mailbox, was becoming more challenging. “I just have to live with it,” she thought, so she tried to pull herself up by her bootstraps and find ways to just get through the day. When the time came to give up her job, she knew she needed more help. After talking with her husband and a close friend, she decided to make an appointment with her doctor. Since taking that difficult first step, so many doors have opened for Vicki. Her doctor made adjustments to her medications, which gave some ease to her shortness of breath. She also provided Vicki with resources for emotional support; like a support group. She is still enjoying her job, volunteer duties, and most recently was placed on a new gardening club committee. She’s excited about new possibilities. Her symptoms and health conditions have not gone away, but she made an important choice - to live her life on her terms.

As we age, our bodies become more sensitive to the effects of alcohol. This means that the same amount of alcohol we were used to drinking will have a different impact on us in general. It is believed that as many as 17 percent of those over 65 have an alcohol-abuse problem. Alcohol misuse problems among older adults have been called the "invisible epidemic." How does alcohol affect us as we age, and especially with medications, as so many of us over 60 have more than one prescription medications?

Among current alcohol drinkers aged 65 or older in the USA, 78 percent reported that they use commonly prescribed medications that interact negatively with alcoholic beverages. Aging slows the body’s ability to break down alcohol, so taking medicines while drinking alcohol can intensify the effects of the medications and increase the risk of falls and other serious injuries. Older adults are more likely to take one or more medications that interact with alcohol, which can also intensify the effects of alcohol.The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) suggests that adults over age 65 who are healthy and do not take medications should drink no more than three drinks on any given day or seven drinks in a week. Those with health problems, or who are taking contraindicative medications, may need to drink less or not at all.

Research on the effects of alcohol on older adults shows that as our bodies change, we have a decrease in the amount of water in our bodies, so there is less water to dilute the alcohol we’ve consumed. Because of the medications we take, older adults

will show a higher blood alcohol level than the same amount consumed by someone younger. Lack of coordination and slurred speech will happen faster, and with less alcohol, than when we were younger. Many prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and herbal remedies can be dangerous, or even deadly, when mixed with alcohol.

• Taking aspirin or arthritis medications and drinking alcohol can increase the risk of bleeding in the stomach.

• Taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) can increase the chances of liver damage.

• Cold and allergy medications containing antihistamines cause drowsiness. Alcohol use can add to this and impair coordination and perception.

• Drinking alcohol and taking some medications that aid sleep, reduce pain, relieve anxiety or depression can increase sleepiness, poor coordination, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, memory problems.

• Drinking and taking medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, ulcers, gout, and heart failure can make those conditions worse.

If you are taking a medication and do not know its effect, avoid drinking alcohol. Talk with your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider about the medication you are taking and how it may interact with alcohol.
