Lake Spenard began as a “bathing” resort as early as 1920, where families could swim, picnic, or relax during the long, warm days of summer. It has also served as a landing facility for floatplanes since the earliest days of Alaskan aviation. Today, nearly a hundred years later, Lake Spenard and Lake Hood have combined to become the Lake Hood Seaplane Base. With over a thousand general aviation aircraft based here, and an average of nearly 200 operations daily (500 during peak season), it is considered the largest and busiest seaplane base in the world. And although the swimming beach is no more, it does continue to be a popular area for residents who enjoy walking, running, bicycling, or rollerblading around the lakes, as well as one of Anchorage’s most popular tourist destinations.

With all the aircraft and pedestrian activity, safety is a huge responsibility – one that every user needs to work together to maintain. By following some basic advice and using common sense, we can make sure Lake Hood continues to be a safe location for everyone to enjoy.

Runways and taxiways are for the use of aircraft ONLY. There is a designated pedestrian route around the lake, as indicated by the bright yellow line on the map. Pedestrians are reminded to stay in this area.

Runways, taxiways, and aircraft parking areas are marked with blue shaded areas on the map and are strictly off limits to foot and vehicular traffic, with the exception of aircraft owners and pilots. Please keep away from these areas.

There are portable toilets along the route for your convenience.Keep dogs on leashes and away from aircraft; please clean up after them.
