Welcome to West Shore Parks & Recreation’s

10 Month Licensed Preschool ProgramThank you for choosing West Shore Parks & Recreation’s 10 Month Preschool Program. Our staff is pleased to welcome you and your family to our program. We look forward to a fun and exciting year with you.

This package is designed to answer any questions you may have about our program, and to help ensure your child’s experience with us is a positive and enriching one.

We recognize that starting preschool is a very important milestone in your child’s (and your) life. For your child, this could be the first time they have been in a group, or been apart from you on a regular basis. We realize that you are entrusting us with the care of your child, and we place your child’s safety, welfare, and development as our highest priority.

PROGRAM INFORMATIONOur PhilosophyThe preschool program provides an exciting, safe, and nurturing environment where children are introduced to a wide variety of activities that promote individual growth and social skill development. Each child is valued and respected as a unique individual. Our approach will focus on understanding and satisfying individual needs at a pace favorable to the age group.

We provide a warm and non-threatening environment which enables all children to develop to their full potential. The preschool environment stimulates growth in the child’s intellectual, emotional, social and physical development through enjoyable and educational activities.

“Learning Through Play”

Our philosophy is based on the premise that young children learn most effectively through play with active participation in a variety of physical, social, emotional and intellectual experiences.

Play is a natural device for learning. Through play children learn to solve problems, increase knowledge and skills, and explore their environment. Play helps children learn who they are and how they relate to the world in which they live.

Our Goals• Foster physical, intellectual and social growth

• Help children develop a positive self-image

• Provide opportunities for social interaction and teamwork

• Promote self-starting, independence and self-discipline

• Encourage creativity, flexibility and curiosity

• Help to prepare your child for kindergarten

• Maintain close and open communications with parents

We strive to provide children with :• A wide variety of activities

• Opportunities to make their own choices

• Positive role models

• The opportunity to problem solve at the individual and group level

• Consistent routine and expectations, and behaviour management techniques

• A safe, caring environment

• Free time to explore their individual interests and skills

• Encouragement and support

Parents as PartnersParents are children’s first and most important educators. We strive to develop a successful and effective partnership with parents. We will:

• Ensure all new parents/caregivers are aware of our program’s policies and procedures

• Encourage parents/caregivers to be active participants in the preschool program

• Ensure that parents/caregivers are informed on a regular basis of their child’s progress

• Welcome the contribution of parents/caregivers to our program

• Make known to parents/caregivers the system for asking questions, making complaints or providing suggestions

Our instructors appreciate you sharing with us your child’s moods, fears, likes and dislikes, sleeping and eating habits, traumatic and joyful events, allergies, favorite activities and games etc. This provides us better insight into your child, allowing us to ensure they have a positive experience in preschool.

Parent involvement is not expected on a daily basis, although we do require parents to participate in field trips and skating days.

Communication with ParentsOpen, clear, and respectful communication is a vital part of the successful operation of the preschool. Please be sure to read the monthly calendar and other distributed information for updates on program activities and events, as well as important dates to remember.

While we don’t provide written reports on your child’s progress in the program, we will provide you with regular verbal updates on your child. If you would like to speak to your child’s teacher in more detail about their progress, we encourage you to request a meeting with your child’s teacher at a time which is mutually convenient.

Should you have questions, comments, concerns or feedback for us about our preschool program at any time, please contact the following:

InstructorsEach program is led by a certified Early Childhood Educator (ECE). Some programs are led by two instructors, one of which is always an ECE, with the second instructor being a certified Early Childhood Educator Assistant. Each instructor brings a diverse and invaluable personal and professional background to the children and families in our program. All staff have undergone routine criminal record checks and hold a valid First Aid Certificate.

From time to time we may need to call in a substitute teacher. The substitute may be an experienced Early Childhood Educator or one or our other experienced staff, who meets the criteria outlined in the Childcare Licensing Regulations.

Guiding Children’s Behaviors Our program supports and promotes the equality of all children. We value the rich diversity of the communities we serve. To help us provide a safe, compassionate, and respectful environment for all of our Preschool patrons, we encourage you to review the following behaviors with your child.

RIGHT: I have the right to be respected in school.

RESPONSIBILITY: It is my responsibility not to tease or be rude to other people, nor to hurt others’ feelings in any way.

RIGHT: I have a right to be safe at school.

RESPONSIBILITY: It is my responsibility not to pull hair, bite, and pinch or physically hurt children or teachers in any way.

RIGHT: I have the right to proper treatment of my own personal property.

RESPONSIBILITY: I have a responsibility to respect other people’s property and to respect the property of the school.

Please discuss these rights and responsibilities with your child. Children who continuously break this agreement may lose their place in the Preschool program.

Guidance StrategiesThe purpose of these guidelines is to empower children. By providing them with the tools necessary to promote a healthy self-image and confidence in their abilities, they will become thriving, valued members of the community in which they live.

Clear and Consistent Simple Limits

By stating clear, consistent, and simple limits, we are helping children to learn and understand what is expected of them. Limits will be stated in a positive manner. By stating limits positively, we are encouraging the child to focus attention on what to do, rather than what not to do.

Cues and Warnings

Cues and warnings offer the child notice that there will be a variance in their activity or routine. This provides the child with the opportunity to anticipate, prepare and adjust to the change.

Acknowledging Feelings

By acknowledging a child’s feelings, we help them to feel understood and supported in their environment, Acknowledging a child’s feelings prior to stating a limit will help to elicit a more positive response from the child.

Choices

Offering and providing alternate choices in a non-threatening manner provides opportunities for the child to exhibit desirable behavior. Alternate choices will be age and developmentally appropriate, individualized for each child and each set of circumstances.

PREPARING FOR PRESCHOOLTips to ensure a smooth transition into school :

• Talk to your child about this new experience, but keep in mind your child’s sense of time, and don’t talk about preschool too often until closer to when they are going to start.

• Speak positively about the upcoming event, and be excited yourself about making new connections and the new chapter in your child’s life.

• Encourage healthy eating and promote proper hand-washing to create healthy habits for September when many people experience illnesses such as the cold and flu.

Transition PhaseIt is not unusual for a child to experience some behavior regression while he/she adjusts to preschool. The new experiences and expectations can be a lot for your child to manage. Please feel free to discuss any concerns you have regarding your child’s behavior with the teacher. They are always willing to give suggestions, address concerns, and help each new child adjust to the group. For more information on separation anxiety, please see appendix.

Tips for a successful preschool experience:

• Be interested, but don’t press your child too hard to tell you what he or she did during class. They will often say “nothing.”

• Don’t expect your child to bring something home every day. Take time to appreciate the crafts they do bring home.

• Don’t be surprised if, in the first few weeks your child acts out at home after being at school, needs more rest, asks to stay home, or goes back to some infant or toddler habits. It is very common for a child to take on new independence and new behavior at home after they feel comfortable in school, but the adjustment can take time.

Holiday ActivitiesWest Shore Parks & Recreation preschools engage in activities that celebrate various holidays. You will be notified via our monthly newsletter of the upcoming holidays the class will be recognizing. Field Trips, Skate and Gym TimeOur instructors enjoy offering a wide variety of learning experiences to all of the children involved in our programs. These experiences may include classroom visits by community workers or field trips to various locations around our community.

Playroom and Kids Cottage programs utilize other areas of the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre when available, such as the skating rink, library, walking trail, Rotary Play Park and use of the Kindergym. Centennial Centre and Royal Bay programs will utilize the facilities at Juan de Fuca on skating and other special days.

In order to provide these opportunities for your child, it may be necessary on rare occasions, to change the time or date of any particular class. It may also be necessary to combine classes together so that a particular field trip can be booked. Parents will be notified in advance of these changes. Instructors will do their best to accommodate all clients but refunds cannot be given if rescheduled time is unsuitable.

In order for us to provide these opportunities for the children, parent duty participation will be required to assist the instructor and provide appropriate adult child ratios. If you are unable to fulfill this obligation you will be responsible for finding a suitable replacement.

If transportation is required it is the responsibility of the parent to arrange. Instructors will not transport children.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND COMFORTManaging IllnessesIf your child is ill, please notify the following: Playroom and Kids Cottage programs, call Reception 250-478-8384 Centennial Centre & Royal Bay programs call the Preschool Programmer at 250-474-5825.

As children are growing and developing, so are their bodies’ immune systems. The child’s ability to combat common illnesses can be impeded due to the immaturity of their immune systems.

For that reason, we ask that you keep your child at home to avoid the potential spread of illness among other children and staff if the following moderate to severe signs/symptoms are present:

• Fever (100 derees F or 38.3 degrees C)

• Cold-like symptoms: colored nasal discharge, coughing, runny nose and eyes

• Unexplained diarrhea

• Infected skin or eyes or an unexplained rash

• Pain-any unexplained or undiagnosed pain

• Difficulty in breathing

• Sore throat or trouble swallowing

• Headaches and stiff neck

• Nausea and vomiting

• Children with known or suspected communicable diseases.

If your child exhibits these symptoms after being dropped off at preschool, you will be contacted to pick them up from school.

Please report any communicable diseases so that we may inform the families of the class participants. We request that you keep your child’s Medical History Information up to date including any alternate phone numbers in the event your child becomes ill or is injured during the course of the day.

All staff are trained in basic first aid and are able to attend to minor accidents. If the nature of the injury is more serious, medical authorities will attend to your child. Parents will be contacted immediately.

Allergen Aware PolicyFor the health and safety of all children, we may require a program to be allergen aware, therefor restricting some types of allergens (e.g. nuts, dairy, etc.)

At the time of registration and on the medical emergency form, parents are asked to indicate any severe or life threatening allergies. We ask that Parents complete an Anaphylaxis care plan detailing their child’s specific triggers.

When a program is designated allergen aware, notices will be sent home with the children and posted within the program entrance notifying parents of any snack restrictions.

Fire drills are carried out by all classes each month, and an earthquake drill is performed once per year, according to Childcare Licensing Regulation.

In the event of a real emergency, staff and children will not return to their classroom until it is deemed safe by an authorized person. Parents will be informed of any emergencies which occur. As with normal dismissal, in an emergency situation children will only be released to a parent or other authorized person as listed on their emergency medical form.

We encourage parents to avoid sending candy, chocolate, or high-sugar foods to preschool with their child on a regular basis. Special days including birthdays, holidays, and other special events may be celebrated by bringing a treat from home.

Clothing and FootwearOutdoor activity is incorporated into our program in all but extreme weather conditions. Please ensure your child is appropriately dressed for the weather each day (rain or shine).

Simple clothing that your child can fasten and unfasten themselves helps foster independence while at preschool. It allows them to go to the toilet when they need to and to put on their coat for outdoor play. Easily washable clothing which you don’t mind getting messy is most suitable, as some of the activities your child will be involved in include paint, glue, and other potentially messy materials.

Shoes must be worn at all times when in the preschool program, please ensure appropriate footwear is brought for both indoor and outdoor activities. During rainy times please pack an extra pair of inside shoes. A separate newsletter will be sent out when this is required.

For example if you would like to withdraw your child in November, we must receive written notice prior to October 1. This gives staff sufficient time to accommodate our wait listed patrons to arrange for a replacement. If one month’s notice is not given, the Centre will retain one month’s fee.

In the event that your account is in arrears over 30 days you will be notified by our accounts department. Arrangements for payment must be made or the result may be the withdrawal of your child from the program.

Learning at Child CareDoes it Really Happen? By Delta McDonell

Do you know what your children are doing at child

care each day? Do you know what kind of activities

the child care provider organizes for the children?

Hopefully you have a good relationship with the

care provider and ask about the types of activities

children engage in at child care. How do you

know that your children are learning at child care

when you do not observe active teaching? Young

children learn by experiencing, exploring, creating,

discussion, pretending, and copying. Children learn

by using their senses – by seeing, feeling, tasting,

touching, and hearing the results of their actions.

When Children play with puzzles, beads, or play

dough, they are developing eye-hand coordination

and small muscle control. They are learning about

colours, size comparison, and spatial relationships.

Play dough, in particular, is a sensory experience

that gives children the opportunity the experiment

with textures and smells.

Art activities such as cutting, pasting, collage,

crayoning, and painting provide children with

opportunities for small muscle development, left to

right orientation, colour discrimination and shape

exploration. With art activities, it is all about the

process, not the product. Children are not expected

to make something or paint a scene, but to just have

fun spreading paint around or cutting paper into

tiny bits.

Storytelling, finger plays, music and singing

little day care ditties all work towards language

development, left to right orientation, learning to

listen, appreciation of books and sound, and rhythm

discrimination. Families may want to ask their child

care provider for the words to the songs and poems

that the children are learning so that they can sing

along with their children at home.

Playing outside each day, even if it’s a bit wet out,

is great for children’s gross motor development,

coordination, and awareness of their body in

space. While exploring their environment children

learn about changing seasons and about nature’s

cycles. Playgrounds don’t need to have lots of big

equipment to be a fun place to play. A few props,

a little directions and space to run freely are all that

children need for a fun outdoor learning experience.

Daily routines such as picking up toys and washing

hands are also good for teaching children certain

skills. These experiences help develop self-

confidence and a sense of orderliness while also

promoting self-direction. Meal times are great

for encouraging conversation and extending

vocabulary.

All these activities have a very important social

component where children have the opportunity

to learn how to share things and ideas and get

along with others. They learn appropriate behaviour

when in the care of a good role model who takes

the time to clarify simple rules and reinforce desired

behaviour. Children learn that they are esteemed

individuals when their child care provider listens to

them, plays with them, talks with them, and honestly

enjoys being in the company.

The attitudes, skills, and knowledge children develop

through play during their first five years are the

foundation for all future learning. So if your children

are having fun at child care, you can rest assured that

they are learning how to learn.

Delta McDonnel, BEd, ECE is the Vancouver Island

Regional Coordinator for Child Care Resources and

Referral programs.

Play Today?By Leila P. Fagg

You say you love your children,

and are concerned they learn each day.

So am I – that’s why I provide

a variety of kinds of play.

You’re asking me the value

of blocks and other such play?

Your children are solving problems,

they will use that skill every day!

You’re asking what’s the value

of having your children play?

Your daughter’s creating a tower;

she may be a builder some day.

You’re saying you don’t want your son

to play in that sissy way.

He’s learning to cuddle a doll;

he may be a father some day.

You’re questioning the interest centres;

they just look like useless play?

Your children are making choices;

they’ll be on their own someday.

You’re worried your children aren’t learning;

and later they will have to pay?

They’re learning a pattern for learning;

for they’ll be learners always.

To Ease the Separation Help for Separation Anxiety

Does your child cry when you drop them off at preschool? Do they cling to your legs and whine?

DO they clutch your shoulders when you try to put them down? Are you going crazy with guilt?

Here’s help for you! Read through these common questions about separation anxiety.

My child cries at preschool before we even get out of the care. What can I do?

Have your child walk out the door and walk into the room on their own. If a child cries and

whines to be held, tell him/her, “you are a big boy/girl now and you can walk.” Take your child

gently but firmly by the hand and lead him/her to the door. Do not give in and pick him up. You

must be consistent

Should I stay for a while at drop off time to make sure my child is comfortable?

Make your drop off time quick and pleasant. Don’t prolong your stay. This shows the child you

are reluctant to leave him/her there. If you are uncomfortable about leaving your child there, he/

she will be able to read into your actions.

Should I sneak out when my child isn’t looking?

No! This will only increase your child’s fear of separation. Give them a quick hug and kiss and say

goodbye. Do not pick up your child! The transition will be harder if you have to pull your child

away from your body.

What should I say to my child at Drop Off Time?

Say to him/her, in a happy voice, “Mommy is going now. I will be back later to pick you up when

class is over. You have lots of fun things to do today too.” Telling your child you’ll be back assures

him/her you’re not abandoning them.

What else can I do to help the transition?

You can bring a reminder of home such as a family photo or special stuffed animal that the child

can keep near their things. They could go get it out when they are feeling lonely. Another thing

to do is give your child a special job; for example, allow them to hold you sunglasses for the

day, or give them an inexpensive piece of jewelry, of your, that they may hold and think of you.

Remember to say that you will be back to get them for the drive home.

Will my child cry all day?

Don’t worry! Most children are done crying by the time you are even out of the parking lot. Your

instructor will certainly let you know if your child cried all day. Trust the instructors. They’ve

been through dozens of times and know what to do with your child.

How long does this separation anxiety last?

Some children never cry at drop off. Others will cry each day at drop off for months. The length

of time depends on how the parents handle it. Parents who are confident and positive at drop

off will present this image to their child, who will learn to trust his/her parents in return. If your

child is happy and content when you pick him up, then he/she is probably happy throughout

most of the class.
