■ The Lisbon strategy : Goal of becoming “the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world” by 2010

Instruments Available for this Call

■ Integrated Projects (IP): research projects of substantial size and ambition aimed to to build the “critical mass” in the priority areas.

■ Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP): Multi-partner research, demonstration or innovation projects to support activities of a more limited scope and ambition.

■ Networks of excellence (NoE) : aims at progressively integrating activities of network partners thereby creating “virtual” centres of excellence.

■ Coordination Action (CA): To promote and support the networking and coordination of research and innovation activities.

■ Specific Support Actions (SSA): Single or multi-partner activities to complement the implementation of FP6

EC Grants to the budget

■ Maximum rates of support for FC and FCF participants:

+ 50% for RTD and innovation-related components+ 35% for any demonstration component+ 100% for any support /coordination activities+ 100% for consortium management

■ AC participants: supported at up to 100% for all components of the project

■ No more than 7% of the Community contribution can be used to support consortium management costs reimbursed at up to 100%

Payments

■ No pre-defined cost categories

■ Pre-financing of up to 85% upon signature by Commission and co-ordinator or when minimum number of contractors have acceded or when all contractors have signed

■ Paid as a contribution to actual costs that are:+ actual, economic and necessary for the project+ follow national accounting rules + recorded in the accounts of the participants + incurred during the duration of the project+ and must exclude indirect taxes, duties, interests, costs reimbursed in respect of another Community project, and not give rise to profit

FP6 results for Malta so far■ In 2003, 140 proposals having at least one Maltese

partner were submitted in FP6 with 35 being funded by the commission.

■ This amounts to approximately €2.6 million going towards the Maltese research community.

■ Of the 14 different organizations getting involved in projects in FP6, were SMEs.

■ A good level of participation was reached at the University of Malta were its different faculties and departments were involved in 11 different projects.
