The Scene

This story takes place at a brainstorming meeting and is between a Project Manager and a Team Leader. The meeting takes place at an office based in Europe. The two characters are discussing the best way to organise time frames and tasks for a project that involves the installation of optic fibre cabling.

3

Scene| 1

Morning........... how was your weekend?

Fine thanks, I managed to spend time with my family, what about you?

I didn’t do anything special, I stayed at home and chilled out with a glass of wine and a movie.

What did you watch?

I managed to see a thriller with Bruce Willis and Robert DeNero.

4

Was it good?

Not bad, slow start, but plenty of twists in the story line.

So where would you like to start?

I was thinking about the project yesterday, the way I see it is that we have to organise our time more effectively. Senior Management have told me that the Human Resources department have rejected our application for more manpower.

5

Ok, so why don’t we use a spread sheet format to divide the time between us.

That sounds like an excellent idea, time blocking our tasks.

We could set daily objectives, it could help us to put project tasks into perspective.

I like the sound of that, it would help both of us to keep track of our progress!.

What should we do if there are any other further changes to the specifications?

That is something that will always be a challenging thing to do, but we could factor in some extra time frames.

6

Ok, yes, that’s a good idea. If we have any savings in terms of time, it can only be a bonus.

Right, that’s one possible option, are there any other options open to us?

We could run the same system but on a large wall chart.

The only disadvantage to that system is that without the use of a computerised system, there will be a higher percentage of human error.

Agreed, I think we also need access to the information when we are out of the office.

If you are in agreement, I think that we should adopt the first option. Well that was a very productive brainstorming session. Let’s put everything we have talked about into action as soon as possible.

7

Scene | 2

In this scene there is a technical fault with the projects website. The Project manager phones the IT depatement for some technical support.

8

Good morning, IT department.

Good morning, I’m phoning from the projects department.

Hi, how can I help you?.

We are experiencing some problems with our web site.

Ok, could you tell me the exact problem please.

Yes, we are having some issues with the loading time, it seems to be taking far too long to load.

Hang on for just a moment and let me check the website ok?

Thanks!

9

Yes, I can see what the problem is, you have too many images. This can often slow down the loading speed of a website.

Is there a solution?

Yes, I think in this case you will need a dedicated server, instead of a shared one. The only other thing that you can do is to remove some of the larger images.

I wish that we could, but we need those images. Could you let me know the cost of a dedicated server and the time that it will take.

No problem, I will give you a call after lunch, probably about 3pm.

Thanks for all your help, I feel a little bit better now that I know that there is a solution.

10

No problem, speak to you later.

Ok, thanks, bye.

Bye.
