The FMA Informative is very grateful to Joy Lim in providing the information for this issue. The Arnis Pasindo Eskrima Tournaments are probably one the leanest Arnis tournaments in the Philip-pines. But what it lacks in resources, it more than makes up for with its heart and spirit. Master Cris Pasindo the organizer, dreams of a time when Arnis would be recognized and respected by many. “We Filipinos should love Arnis because it’s our own. We should be the first one to appreciate it,” he always says. Master Pasindo stated that every day, he thinks about ways to help make that dream happen. One of the methods he thought of was putting up tournaments. Tournaments that are above reproach, where organizers and officials act with respect and integrity. Master Pasindo is truly a man of integrity. A man who loves Arnis. This you will learn once reading this issue.

Some Words From the Organizer, Master Cris Pasindo I organized this tournament so that more Filipinos will learn and appreciate Arnis. It is our national sport, our very own. Aside from that, competitions are effective motivators for Arnis practitioners to train seri-ously. It’s one way to keep the standards high. It’s also a venue to meet and bond with others in the community. I thank my friends for helping and volunteering their time and expertise. This is not a financially-reward-ing endeavor for us but it’s worth it. From the secretariat to the officials, most of us are doing this out of our love for Arnis and the Philippines.

Joy Lim is a pediatrician, volunteer preschool teacher, and late-bloomer marathoner. As part of her fitness training and her desire to try something new, she started Arnis training under Master Cris Pasindo in January 2013. She put up a blog, www.thedeadlydance.wordpress.com, to record her thoughts and sto-ries about Arnis, the sport she has grown to love. Visit Arnis Pasindo Eskrima

The Arnis Pasindo Eskrima tournaments are probably one of the leanest Arnis tournaments in the country. But what it lacks in resources, it more than makes up for with its heart. Let me tell you why.

The Tournament Organizer Master Cris Pasindo a 6th degree Arnis Black Belt, trained under Grandmaster Mon Kiatson is the organizer. Although lacking in formal education, he has big dreams for Arnis in this country. He dreams of a time when Arnis would be recognized and respected by many. “We Filipinos should love Arnis because it’s our own. We should be the first one to appreciate it,” he always says. He says that every day, he thinks about ways to help make that dream happen. One of the methods he thought of was putting up tournaments -- Tournaments that are above reproach, where organizers and officials act with respect and integrity. Many months before a tournament, Master would start approaching people and request for financial support. Private individuals are difficult to approach so he resorts to city officials. He gives them formal request letters and the secretaries would ask him to come back for the response. After several days of going back and forth, he would most often be given anywhere from Php200-500 (USD 5-12). He accepts them gratefully, saying that small amounts put together would amount to something big in the end. A close friend of his related this story. One evening, after spending all day commuting and waiting for some city councilors to respond to his financial request, Mas-ter Cris went home with Php 500 (12 USD). He prepared his dinner of left over rice and sardines. He knew he had enough money in his pocket for a more substantial dinner, but he said, “This money was given for the tournament, so that is where this money will go.” He then proceeded to enjoy his dinner, not feeling sorry for himself at all. Truly a man of integrity. A man who loves Arnis.

The Tournament Officials When Master Cris told his friends about his vision, they were willing to help. People like Master Rogelio Santos and Punong Guro Francisco “Boy” Pajo, who are na-tional trainers for Arnis Officiating, agreed to round up their network. Knowing that the financial com-pensation will not really match the skill and expertise they will bring in did not discourage them. During the tournament, they would work from 8AM to 8PM, hardly taking breaks to eat meals and personal things. At the end of the day, they would all count the money at hand plus what they got from the participants’ fees (usually Php 200-250 each), and divide it among themselves. The

highest official would usually go home with Php 400-600 (10-14 USD). So little for such high ex-pertise. It’s heartbreaking some-times.Coaches and Athletes The participants join despite the fact that the organizer cannot even afford a floor matting and that the armors are just bor-rowed. Nary did I hear a disre-spectful tone of voice against an official or a fellow athlete. They came to play and play hard they did. The tournament was exciting and spectacular to watch. Young people playing fast and passionate-ly is one of Arnis’ best moments. The atmosphere during the closing and awarding ceremony

was one of satisfaction and accom-plishment. A great day, playing a great game. When asked if he would continue to put up tournaments despite all the difficulties, Master Cris says, “It’s understandable that people hesitate to support us. They don’t know us yet. They don’t know Arnis yet. If we wait for them to support us before we move, then tournaments may never happen. We have to move by faith first. Then when people see many us playing, excelling, and enjoying this awesome sport they will join us. Let’s just have faith and carry on.”Wise words from a wise man.

Master Crisanto Pasindo Master Pasindo, born in Davao del Norte, Philippines in 1975, was a champion Judo, Karate, and Kickboxing practitioner during his earlier days. He took up Arnis under Grandmaster Mon Kiathson in 2002. After two years he became a chief instructor. In 2008, with the blessing of Grandmaster Kiathson, Master Cris, having achieved 6th degree blackbelt level, put up his own club, the Arnis Pasindo Eskrima Martial Arts Association. Master Pasindo and his students emphasize respect and diligence in their trainings and to date have already successfully organized seven tourna-ments.Mission Statement: To excel in and promote Arnis in the Philippines and the world.Vision Statement: A group of highly-skilled, peace-loving, and respectful Arnisadors working together in promoting and propagating the art, especially to young people both in the Philippines and abroad.Contact Master Cris Pasindo: [email protected] words about Master Pasindo:Grandmaster Vicente Sanchez: “Mabuting tao si Master Cris Pasindo at pinupuri ko siya dahil ang mga tour-nament niya ay laging well-prepared at magagaling ang referees at judges niya.“ (Master Cris is a good man and I praise him for his tournaments. They are always well-prepared and the referees and judges are good.)From a contemporary, Grandmaster Jay Saceda Jumawan: I think Master Cris Pasindo is one of the best among us. He is the new “Smoking Stick.”From a student, Lakan Von Altas: “Everything I know about Arnis I got from Master Cris Pasindo. He is a generous and excellent instructor.”
