On a cold December evening in 1941, 16-year-old Joseph J. Anthony was at home in
Pittsburgh, Pa. with his family listening to the radio.
W h e n t h e p r o g r a m was interrupted for the announcement that Pearl Harbor had been attacked and
the United States was entering World War II, Anthony was filled with a desire to defend his country.
As a second-generation American, Anthony had been
taught that he was a citizen of the best country in the world and that loyalty to his country was a priority. Anthony wanted to immediately enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps,
but his parents asked him to wait until he graduated from high school the following May.

Endowed funds will be utilized for memorial’s future
The Walk of Freedom: Derby Area Veterans Memorial is a part of a larger park which is maintained by the city, but organizers of the memorial are working to create funding for its long-term improvements and upgrades.
Those involved are asking people interested in the memorial to donate cash gifts to establish endowed funds for the memorial, the Derby Veterans Memorial Fund, according to Theresa Hearn, executive director of the Derby Community Foundation. The fund has been created to make sure there is a way to take the memorial into the future, she said.
The city will continue t o p rov ide t he no rma l maintenance at the park and the memorial.
“It’s not for normal, day-to-day things,” Hearn said.
Hearn also emphasized that many times people do not contribute to endowed funds because they think it requires large donations. All cash donations add up to create a way to provide for the memorial’s future.
“It doesn’t have to be huge,” she said.
For additional information, contact the Derby Community Foundation by mail at P.O. Box 372, Derby, Kan. 67037; by phone at 788-9815; or email Hearn at [email protected].

Living close by, Robert Mendoza often witnesses the firsthand impact of the Derby Area Veterans M e m o r i a l : Wa l k o f Freedom.
“Every day I see someone standing in front of the bricks,” Mendoza said. “Being the caretaker, it’s almost emotional because you know they are having a moment. That’s pretty amazing.”
Walk of Freedom continues to growM e n d o z a , D e r b y ’s
director of public works and U.S. Air Force veteran, has watched the Walk of Freedom at Garrett Park grow since its dedication two years ago.
What started as an effort to create a memorial for local veterans has blossomed into five large obelisks, each representing one of the branches of the Armed Forces, along a quarter-mile walking path.
Brick donations, each engraved with a veterans name at the foot of the obel i sks , remain the driving force behind the memorial.
This year, 41 more bricks were added. Each brick is more than a donation, said Mendoza. It’s an opportunity to cement a local veteran’s place into history.
“It really is a history book,” Mendoza said. “It’s a place of calm and quite and a place to reflect. We wanted a place where people can stop and reflect and think about the service of these individuals.”
The Walk of Freedom will begin work on its largest addition next year, a museum-quality memorial to Air Force Col. Merlyn Hans Dethlefsen, who was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service during the Vietnam War.
“He is one of those stories that we don’t want lost in time,” Mendoza said. “He was the first veteran we honored when this started.”
Other additions, which are also paid for by brick donations, are done on a regular basis.
This year, a new sidewalk was added to turn the path into a complete loop. Additional landscaping and irrigation upgrades
have also been added to the path along Garrett Park, which was chosen for its serene environment.
Each monument grows as more bricks are added. Area for more sculptures, benches and landscaping
are also in the works. “When you purchase a
brick, that money goes for the development of this
site,” Mendoza said. “It’s an exciting thing to have in our community. I think people appreciate it.”
GINGER.G..GOLDEN/Informer.photoLeft to right: Carson Baxter, Allie Clasen and Kayson Lockerbie look at one of the military stations in the Derby Area Veterans Memorial: Walk of Freedom in Garrett Park.
I n M a y 1 9 4 2 , Anthony began what would become a 27-year career, first as a navigator/bombardier in the Army Air Corps and ending in 1970 with retirement from the U.S. Air Force as a major. He died in 2003 and was buried with full military honors.
The missions and a s s i g n m e n t s t h a t ensued during those 27 years have been the
topic of many bedtime stories in the Anthony family – I should know because Joseph was my father.
I am so grateful that my father shared his experiences with my siblings and me. His stories have been shared with grandchildren and great-grandchildren over the years so that we preserve his legacy as a veteran and as a man who loved his country.

Gray Bishop will grace this year’s Veterans Day C e l e b r a t i o n with the sound of his trumpet.
B i s h o p , who teaches band at all six e l e m e n t a r y schools in the Derby school d i s t r i c t and ass i s t s wi th the high school band and orchestra, will perform The
Star Spangled Banner and Taps.
“I like being able to play Taps for people as opposed to the fake trumpet that has the recording that’s inside it that the military will use sometimes,” said Bishop. “If they don’t have a bugler, then they send somebody with the plastic flugelhorn looking thing, but then they have a digital recording that plays Taps out of it.”
Bishop’s father, Julian Bishop, was a World War II veteran, he said. Bishop played Taps at his funeral
service five years ago. He has also played for other veterans’ funerals but said this will be his first Veterans Day ceremony.
Bishop graduated in 1979 from Wichita State University with a degree in music education. He then taught band in Wichita for 31 years.
Bishop also plays trumpet for the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Wichita Music Theater and a jazz group called the Bodo Ensemble.

Tammy Zimmerman knows it is important to tell veterans’ stories.
Through such an effort, she got to know the grandfather who died years before her birth. She also learned some of the tricks to telling those stories and she will share them at Derby’s Veterans Day
Author sees importance of telling veterans’ stories
LINDA.STINNETT/Informer.file.photo.Tammy Zimmerman published a book, “Blinded by His Shadow,” about World War II and her grandfather’s life, just over a year ago.
i n f o r m a t i o n f r o m m y grandmother) and it makes me more grateful that she was able to share,” Tammy said. “It makes me see more the importance of taking the time to visit with older relatives and friends.”
Joseph Z immerman’s s t o r y, B l i n d e d b y H i s Shadow, has been enjoyed by the Zimmerman family. Its appeal, though, stretches beyond that immediate family as it recounts critical World War II history and the men who fought.
Tammy encourages others to search out the stories of their families.
“History is made of people who do what comes to them … ordinary American history,” she said.

book, “Blinded by His

a book on the life of her g r a n d f a t h e r , J o s e p h Zimmerman of Quinter, just over a year ago. Her grandfather served in World War II, seeing some of the fiercest fighting of the war and helping free a concentration camp.
Upon his return from the war, Joseph and millions of other U.S. soldiers returned to their peaceful American lives and for many years did not talk about what they had seen as they fought for their country.
Joseph died at age 37. He was the father of seven children and left a legacy each could treasure. However, for many years the family’s pain of his untimely death due to a brain tumor virtually stopped them from talking about Joseph.
It wasn’t until Tammy

realized she was reading a book about World War II and that it was connected to the real life saga her grandfather had lived that talk about him began in earnest. For nearly 6-1/2 years, Tammy researched the war and used archived records of her grandfather’s regiment to document his action in the war.
She learned there are oftentimes records that are unique. For example, news did not travel in the fast pace of today’s electronic world, but letters and stories from the front could take months to get home. That made people so hungry for information that letters from soldiers were oftentimes published in local newspapers.
Those papers have been painstakingly archived by the Kansas Historical Society and Tammy found records of her own grandfather’s letters through those microfilmed records.
“That’s another avenue of gleaning information,” she said.
As part of her search, Tammy also talked at length to her grandmother. Sharing old memories took some prodding at first, but her grandmother did share information and while searching for old letters found poetry her late husband had written.
Those handwritten words a r e s o m e t h a t Ta m m y treasures.
“It wasn’t letters, but it was him speaking,” she said. “I kind of felt I grew to know him from hearing him talk.”
Just over a month ago, Tammy’s grandmother died. Knowing her book is only a year out of publication, it emphasizes the importance of recording veterans’ stories in a timely manner.

Saluting & Honoring Our Veterans!
Joining our community in rememberingthose in the armed services, past and present.

Sgt. 1st Class Laurie Monarez of Derby joined the military on a dare. She says it was the best dare she ever completed, despite (or perhaps because of) four Middle Eastern assignments.

Monarez dares others to thank a veteran
By Davi [email protected]
Donato Ornelas of Derby has an appreciation for veterans borne of his own harrowing experiences as a World War II Army paratrooper in the Philippines
“I was a machine gunner,” he said. “We were scouts. I jumped out of perfectly good airplanes to search for the enemy in the jungle.”
I n a d d i t i o n t o reconnaissance, Ornelas and his fellow soldiers in the 503rd Regiment Combat Team rescued other squads who were trapped by the enemy.
“I remember once I almost had to do hand-to-hand with a Japanese officer coming at me with a saber sword,” he said. “If my machine gun would have failed I would not be here today. I still to this day see the officer’s
face and the saber landing at my feet.”
Stalks in the jungle were taller than the men, he said. The soldiers survived the nights living in foxholes they dug. One time he and a buddy were surprised by an enemy machine gunner.
“We jumped into a hole which was not very deep, but deep enough it saved our lives,” he said. “I can remember the bullets hitting the dirt around us and the hot brass landing on my chest. Then one of our gunners started shooting back at him so we could escape.”
On another mission, a lieutenant told him to pick two men and scout ahead of the company.
“I told the other two to go one way and I would go the other,” he said. “I heard two shots, so I hollered to see if they were OK. One had been shot and killed and the other

“I just appreciate those who serve,” he said.
people.“Whether it is Saudis, Iraqis,
Turkish, French, Kuwaitis, British, Afghanis, Iranian, Bangladeshi, Kenyan, it has been my awesome pleasure to meet and work with such a mix of all of God’s children,” she said. “I wouldn’t change that experience no matter how challenging at times it has been.”
Downsides of military service are the greed she has sometimes witnessed and the stress deployments cause families, she said.
“It is very demanding and the distance can be very hard on already failing relationships,” she said. “Not to mention the time away from your kids. You can’t get that time back. Once it is gone it is gone.”
Deployments deepened Monarez’s appreciation of life.
“It is sad that it takes a tragedy like 911 for Americans to appreciate the little things in life,” she said. “I remember returning home after the Gulf War and thinking how awesome it was to just see green grass. Deployment made me appreciate more things in life – fresh air, indoor plumbing, family and friends.”
Monarez works nights as a housing corporal at a federal jail now. Despite experiencing some people who are “out for themselves” both at home and abroad, Monarez challenges people to “love all God’s children.”
“Don’t judge,” she said. “Embrace anyone who is different, I dare you.”
She offers one final piece of advice: “Thank a veteran. They so deserve it, no matter how big or small their sacrifice.”
Proud to Have These Veterans As OUR Residents!
Thank You to them and all Veterans who have served. D E R B Y A S S I S T E D L I V I N G

was trapped by the enemy. I told him to stay put and I would go and get help. We were able to rescue him.”
Ornelas joined the military to go with his brother. He had not ever been in a plane, let alone jumped out of one prior to becoming a paratrooper, but a buddy convinced him it was a good deal.
“Regu la r Army pay was $50 a month, but paratroopers earned $100 a month,” he said. “There was really nothing I liked about my job. Despite what we had to do during the war we did manage to have some good times with our comrades.”
The war left Ornelas “a nervous wreck,” he said.
“When I returned, I was shell-shocked. If a car backfired I would hit the ground,” he said. “Back then you just either drank the issues away or tried to deal with it as best you could.”
Ornelas said people made the men feel like heroes when they returned home.
“My brother and I walked into a dance hall, and as soon as we walked in (in uniform), the music stopped and everyone started to cheer,” he said. “We didn’t have to pay for anything that night. It felt good to be
to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq, and then went to Afghanistan in 2010-2011 as a military contractor.
“I joined the Army National Guard in 1982,” Monarez said. “I like being able to make my troops laugh and keep their spirits up – the camaraderie.”
She was in communications for the first 15 years of service.
“After I volunteered for Desert Storm, I was assigned to 702nd Transportation Battalion, A Company,” she said. “I became an ammo truck driver. When I returned from the Gulf War, I ended up staying in the transportation field.”
In 2004, Monarez was activated with the 778 HET Company, and transported tanks from ports in Kuwait to forward operating bases in Iraq. Next she was assigned to handle frustrated cargo (shipments which are stopped en route and require further disposition instructions) at Kuwait’s Camp Arfijan.
“In 2008 I was activated to Iraq with the 287th Sustainment Brigade in Baghdad as a liaison for the brigade colonel,” she said. “My job was to keep my colonel informed with any problems or intelligence to help keep our missions safe and successful.”
M o n a r e z l i k e s t h e challenges of her military and civilian jobs, and meeting and working with a variety of
