Definición de términos gramaticales
Parte A
No seapure.

How to start a translation?¿Cómo iniciar una traducción?
application - backup - cursor - default - directory -disk - cache - expansion slot – file - floppy disk -folder - hard drive - hardware - icon - modem -
operating system -parallel port - path – pointer – port - program - ram- rom - serial port - server - software - video card

distinguir palabras.
1Escuche sus canciones
favoritas. No tenga miedode cantarlas aunque nocomprenda las palabras. No olvide que también el
idioma tiene sonidos ymovimientos que no son
habituales en lapronunciación del
castellano.

Gates, William Henry, III (1955- ), American business executive who serves as chairmanand chief executive officer (CEO) of Microsoft Corporation, the leading computer softwarecompany in the United States. Gates cofounded Microsoft in 1975 with high school friendPaul Allen. The company's success made Gates one of the most influential figures in thecomputer industry and, eventually, the richest person in the world.
Born in Seattle, Washington, Gates attended public school through the sixth grade. In theseventh grade he entered Seattle's exclusive Lakeside School, where he met Paul Allen.Gates was first introduced to computers and programming languages in 1968, when he wasin the eighth grade. That year Lakeside bought a teletype machine that connected to amainframe computer over phone lines. At the time, the school was one of the few thatprovided students with access to a computer.

Mainframe computers have more memory, speed, and capabilities than workstations and
are usually shared by multiple users through a series of interconnected computers. They
control businesses and industrial facilities and are used for scientific research. The most
powerful mainframe computers, called supercomputers, process complex and time-
consuming calculations, such as those used to create weather predictions. They are used
by the largest businesses, scientific institutions, and the military. Some supercomputers
have many sets of CPUs. These computers break a task into small pieces, and each CPU
processes a portion of the task to increase overall speed and efficiency. Such computers
are called parallel processors.

Mainframe computers have more memory, speed, and capabilities than workstations andare usually shared by multiple users through a series of interconnected computers. Theycontrol businesses and industrial facilities and are used for scientific research. The mostpowerful mainframe computers, called supercomputers, process complex and time-consuming calculations, such as those used to create weather predictions. They are usedby the largest businesses, scientific institutions, and the military. Some supercomputershave many sets of CPUs. These computers break a task into small pieces, and each CPUprocesses a portion of the task to increase overall speed and efficiency. Such computersare called parallel processors.

Computer software
Computer software consists of the programs, or lists of instructions, that control theoperation of a computer. The term can refer to the sum of all programs that may be usedwith a certain computer, or it can refer to a single program (see computer programming).
Software is intangible information stored as electrical impulses in the memory of acomputer, in contrast to the hardware components of a computer system, such as the centralprocessing unit and input-output devices. These electrical impulses are decoded by thehardware and interpreted as instructions, with each instruction guiding or controlling thehardware for a brief time. As an example, and ADD instruction of a program controls thehardware for the period of time needed to add two numbers.
A wide variety of software is used in a computer system, and it is classified by the layers ofoperation within the system. The lowest layer is nearest to the human operator. A compileris a software program whose purpose is to convert programs written in a high-levellanguage into the low-level form that can be interpreted by the electrical circuits of thehardware (see computer languages).
Compiler programs eliminate the tedious job of conversing with a computer in its ownbinary language. Interpreter programs perform a similar task. An operating system is asoftware program that controls the computer system itself. It organizes hardware functionssuch as reading and writing input and output data (from a keyboard, screen, or disk-driveunit to a screen, printer, or disk-drive unit), intercepting commands from the user, andperforming housekeeping chores such as allocating time and resources in a time-sharingprogram.

PrefixesPrefijos
III How computers work
The physical computer and its components are known as hardware.
Computer hardware includes the memory that stores data and instructions;
the central processing unit (CPU) that carries out instructions; the bus that
connects the various computer components; the input devices, such as a
keyboard or mouse, that allow the user to communicate with the computer;
and the output devices, such as printers and video display monitors, that
enable the computer to present information to the user. The programs that
run the computer are called software. Software generally is designed to
perform a particular type of task—for example, to control the arm of a
robot to weld a car’s body, to write a letter, to draw a graph, or to direct the
general operation of the computer.

Commercially speaking, abbreviations are very common. They are used every day. Theconvention for punctuation of abbreviations (which is not rigidly observed) is:
- Some consonants and the last letter: no full stop (eg: Ltd)- First letter and some other letter: full stop (eg: Co.)
We can distinguish three different ways to shorten a word:
1- By means of the abreviation: anon, etc. abbreviation.2- Using the initial or first syllables of the words that constitute a name:
YMCA (Young Men´s Christian Association), LA (Los Angeles) initials.3- Using the initial or first syllables of the words that constitute a name and that can be
read as a regular word, a noun, an everyday word: AIDS, UN. Se llama acronym.4- Another way is putting two or more words together, either the first syllable of the first
and the first syllable or letter of the second or the following : prolog fromprogramming logic, lisp from list processor, cobol from common business orientatedlanguage.
CPU,ASCII, Cdrom, etc., etc., etc.

Spreadsheet programs can be used to develop business ledgers and financial models and toperform calculations in areas such as statistics and engineering. Vertical applicationsprograms are tailored to very narrow and specific tasks, such as medical billing, payroll fora certain business, or the design of an airplane. Other common software programs includeWORD PROCESSORS, VIDEO GAMES, desktop publishing programs (seePUBLISHING, DESKTOP), and numerical tools for such activities as accounting andstock-market analysis.

Introduction Microcomputer, desktop - or notebook-size computing device that uses a
microprocessor as its central processing unit, or CPU. Microcomputers are also called
personal computers (PCs), home computers, small-business computers, and micros. The
smallest, most compact are called laptops. When they first appeared, they were
considered single-user devices, and they were capable of handling only four, eight, or 16
bits of information at one time. More recently the distinction between microcomputers
and large, mainframe computers (as well as the smaller mainframe-type systems called
minicomputers) has become blurred, as newer microcomputer models have increased the
speed and data-handling capabilities of their CPUs into the 32-bit, multiuser range.
