Why talking about research on GIs?

• The GI systems demonstrate high levels of fragility that can have effects on their sustainability

• Sustainability is threatened by human decision in their political actions (private or public)

• Innovation can not be hidden but it need to be managed in all its implications

• Research has pointed out the critical points of the GI systems but … still many aspects have to be investigate in order to face problems and challenges due the complexity of GI products

What are Gis?

• TRIPS definition “Indication which identifies a good as originating in the territory of a Member, or a region or locality in that territory, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin”

• EU designations • PDO (a) originating in a specific place, region or, in exceptional cases, a country; (b)

whose quality or characteristics are essentially or exclusively due to a particular geographical environment with its inherent natural and human factors; and (c) the production steps of which all take place in the defined geographical area.

• PGI (a) originating in a specific place, region or country; (b) whose given quality, reputation or other characteristic is essentially attributable to its geographical origin; and (c) at least one of the production steps of which take place in the defined geographical area

• TSG* a) results from a mode of production, processing or composition corresponding to traditional practice for that product or foodstuff; or (b) is produced from raw materials or ingredients that are those traditionally used. (* Without IPR right )
