MBR plant: The MBR is fed with primary effluent from Baix Llobregat WWTP :

• Biological treatment (23 m3) for organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removal (FeCl3) unit that comprises anaerobic (2,5 m3),

anoxic (5 m3) , facultative (2,5 m3) and aerobic tanks (13 m3).

• 17 organic micropollutants (9 pharmaceuticals, 6 pesticides and 2

alkylphenols) were selected as target analytes in order to represent a wide range

of micropollutants occurring in waste waters.

• Analytical method developed:

• solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled online with

• liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with

electrospray ionization

Analysis of conventional and reuse parameters (RD 1620/2007)

• SS (standard methods 2540) and BOD5 (Standard methods 5210 B)

• Turbidity (Hach Lange 2100 Turbidimeter)

• COD (Hach-Lange LCI Test kits) and TN, NH4+-N , NO3—N, (Merck spectroquant test

kits).

• DOC (Shimadzu VSH-TOC analyzer)

• E.Coli were analyzed with IDEX Colilert quanti-Tray test kits

• Legionella pneumophila (ISO 11731, Detection and enumeration of Legionella)

Evaluation of the effect of powdered activated carbon (PAC) applied in the

MBR and the capillary NF in terms of:

Water Quality:

Conventional and reuse parameters defined in RD 1620/2007

Improvements on the removal efficiencies of selected organic

micropollutants by adding PAC.

Membrane performance:

Quantification of improvements in membrane fouling by adding PAC.

Quantification of the energy demand and chemical cleanings

requirements in the selected operational conditions
