I would first like to thank you for investing a little of your time to read our new prospectus and I hope it will prove informative and worth-while. In particular I would like to extend a warm welcome to parents from our nursery school at the Cottage and our sister nursery at Monton Village.

LAST YEAR - In looking forward to a new year it’s right to dwell briefly on some of the achievements of last year. Rightly or wrongly, results are seldom far from the surface when we talk about achievements, and last year’s SATs results were once again excellent. We were ranked 1st in the Salford area, including all state primaries and prep schools. And although our smaller size does not permit our official ranking in other league tables, our last 3 years’ results would have ranked us 56th in the Sunday Times league table of the top 250 Prep Schools in the country, another abso-lutely outstanding result. The school’s results are posted on the school website.

The children again did wonderfully well, almost all the Prep 8 children sat exams for either independent schools or state grammar schools, and they were all successful in receiving place offers. These included offers from: Bolton School, Bury Grammar, Man-chester Grammar School (MGS), Altrincham Grammar, St Ambrose, Sale Grammar and Urmston Grammar. In recent years we have also had offers from Withington and Man-chester High School for Girls. The school’s Key Stage 1 SATs results showed a excellent pass rate at level 3—well ahead of other schools. The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, completed by children at the end of the Reception year (Prep 2), showed all children to be working well ahead of national averages and well into Key Stage 1.

Many of you will know that there is much more about the school than just excellent results. Our huge commitment to Drama in the curriculum has long been a traditional strength in the school and again we saw some wonderful class productions at both Christmas and Easter. With so many moving and unforgettable performances, I shared again the sense of pride that the parents felt watching their children perform so well and

with such confidence. The drama club’s production of Oliver following on from their success with Mary Poppins last year was thoroughly enjoyable and together with the leavers’ festivities in July left many happy memories, which I am sure will be fondly remembered for a long time.

The children have competed well in all our sport teams, representing the school at a variety of events including the Bolton School Sports’ festival, Bridgewater Cross Country and the Beech House swimming gala. We were also North West champions in the David Lloyd schools’ tennis tournament. The children performed extremely well in the Salford Schools’ cross country league, with top 20 finishes in every event. Both football and netball teams had a mixed year with some good results.

NEXT YEAR – For many there will be impor-tant decisions to be made during the coming year. Parents with children in the nursery school who are 4 years old before the end of August 2010 will need to decide whether they wish their child to stay on into Prep 2 in September 2010. The coming years are hugely formative for children of this age and I do feel it is essential to ensure that their excellent start and positive attitude to school and learning is continued, developed and supported by plenty of confidence-building achievements.

Finally, I must thank my teaching staff, whose hard work and effort helps to make the school what it is. The benefit of having a motivated and experienced team, fully committed to the ethos of the school cannot be overstated. We really do believe and EXPECT that ALL children are capable of achieving a good to high standard of educa-tion, a belief fully justified by our results. Many schools simply don’t believe that all their children can achieve and expect very little from many of them. At this school we will not label individuals as low achievers but work to try to maximise the potential in all children. I feel that the results speak for themselves.

Mrs E L Howard - Head of Prep School

FAMILY DISCOUNT:- Parents with more than one child in the school (nursery or prepara-

tory school) are entitled to family discount on the use of care facilities - nursery fees, after school club, early birds and holiday club. The discount is based on the total of all fees paid,

excluding trips and extra-curricular items and is between 10% and 20%.

GRANTS AND OTHER HELP:- In Prep 2 your child will still be entitled to between 1 and 3

terms nursery grant. Grant is worth about £670 per term (2009 figure) and is used to offset fees in this first year. Help through the working families tax credit may also be available to

pay towards childcare costs, which include, Early Birds, After School Club and Holiday Club.

CHILDREN ALREADY IN NURSERY SCHOOL: Children already attending and who will be

4 years of age before 31st August will be given priority in the allocation of Prep 2 places sub-ject to the rules set out below. We will advise you of the application procedure in the Autumn

term preceding your child’s entry into Prep 2. An open evening will be held during this term and this is a good opportunity to find out more about the school. If you want your child to be

considered for Prep 2 entry then you must fill in and return a Prep School Application Form,

which is available from the school office. (Note: you may return a completed Prep School ap-plication form at any time earlier in the year or even in an earlier year if you wish). Once in

receipt of your application, an offer letter will be sent and you will have a fixed period of time

in which to accept the place. Acceptance of a place is achieved by paying a place deposit of £100 to the school. A place will only be reserved upon receipt of a full place deposit which is

redeemable against the first term's fees but not refundable in the event of the place not being

taken. At the beginning of March any remaining Prep 2 places will made equally available out-side the school and will be filled on a first come, first served basis until the class is full.

CHILDREN NOT ALREADY AT THE SCHOOL:- You may apply at any time for entry into

any school year up to the age of 11 years old. Normally you will wish to come and have a look around the school and this is done by making an appointment with the Head of the Prep,

who will be pleased to show you around school and answer all your questions. If you like the school and you want a place, you must apply by returning a completed application form. Once

we have this we will then contact you to arrange a time when you could bring your child into

school so that we may meet them. We will want to assess your child’s progress in an informal way and the outcome of these meetings is usually very positive. If we are able to offer your

child a place then we will inform you of this in writing. You must then accept this offer, within

a specific time, by returning a place deposit of £250.00, which is redeemable against the first term's fees but not refundable in the event of the place not being taken.
