    CLUB KIT DESIGN

    Once the Club completes the

    move to EmiratesStadium for the

    beginning ofthe 2006/07

    season, the players will revertto

    wearing the famousArsenal red

and white strip, the origins of

    which tell a greatstory.

In 1895, two yearsbefore theClub became

    professional, a small

    group ofNottingham

    Forest players, Fred

    Beardsley, Bill Parr

    and Charlie Bates,

    joined Dial Square FC,

    (the Clubs firstname)

    and broughttheir old

    red kit along with them.

    Working to a tight

    budget, the Club decided

    the mostinexpensive way

of acquiring a strip wasto kit out the team in the same

    colouras the ex-Forestplayers. This

original kit was a darkred, with long

sleeves, a collar and three buttons

down the front. The shirtwas worn

    with white knee length shortsand

heavyw oollen socks with blue and

    white hoops. The goalkeeper wore

the same attire apartfrom the shirt -

which was a hand knitted cream

    woollen polo neckjumper. It was

    thisdarkred kit thatthe team wore

    during their firstseason atHighbury

    in 1913/14.

    Beardsley, Parrand Bates

    generosityin providing shirtsand

inspiring the Club to playin red

    encouraged several otherteams to

follow Arsenalslead. One of the most famousexamples is

Sparta Prague whose president, DrPetric, visited London

in 1906. He returned home to Czechoslovakia afterhaving

watched Woolwich Arsenal and wasso inspired by the kit

thathe demanded his team playin the same colours.

Today, Sparta Prague continue to play in the same dark

red kit, not disimilar to Arsenals 2005/06 redcurrant.

Itwas the arrival of managerHerbertChapman in 1925thatlaunched the Arsenal kit as we know ittoday.

Depending on which source you believe, Chapman either

noticed someone atthe ground wearing a red sleeveless

sweaterover a white shirt or played golfwith famous

cartoonistof the dayTom Webster who wore something

similar. Either way the look inspired the managerto

create a new strip combining a red shirt with white collar

and sleeves. It also incorporated the Club badge, which

was positioned on the left-hand side ofthe shirt.

In the 1950sa second kitwas developed to combata clash

of colourswith opposing home teamswith similarkits. And

in 1960, the Club moved awayfrom the woven rugbyshirt

style to a new knitted cotton jerseyin around 1960.

The Clubsfamous canon graphicappeared on the shirtfor

the firsttime in the early 1970s. It

    wasthis shirtthatArsenal won their

    firstfamous double, both the

    League Championship and the FA

    Cup in the 1970/71 season.

In the late 1970s, the shirtfeatured

    a kitmanufacturerslogo for the first

time, in thiscase Umbro. And in

    1982 JVC became the Clubsfirst

shirt sponsor, which in turn made

way for SEGA in 1999. From the

    beginning ofthe 2002/03 season

    telecommunications companyO2

    tookoveras shirtsponsorsand from

    the 2006/07 season thiswill change

to FlyEmirates in a deal which lasts

    eightyears.

In 1888,just two yearsafter the formation of theClub, Arsenal, who werethen called Royal Arsenal, adopted its first crest (1).This was based largely onthe coat of arms of the Borough of

Woolwich. The Club was based in theBorough from its formation until 1913,playing at Plumstead Common;Sportsman Ground; Manor Ground;Invicta Ground and the Manor Groundagain before heading across London toHighbury, Islington.

The original badge comprised three columns, which, although they look like chimneys, are inactual factcannons. The significance ofthe cannonsto the Borough ofWoolwich derivesfrom the long militaryhistorysurrounding the area. The Royal Arsenal, RoyalArtilleryRegiment and variousmilitaryhospitals-which still dotthe landscape today- were allprominentin the Borough.

The cannonson the original crest were obviouslya reference to the militaryinfluence in Woolwichand despite the Club's ties with the area being cut89 yearsago, the cannon theme has developedthroughoutthe yearsand has remained prominenton the Gunnersdifferent crests down the years, including the new design.

In the earlydays the crest wasnot assignificantapartofa football club'sidentity asit istoday.Shirtsremained plain, unless commemorating asignificantmatch, an FACup Final for example, andthe crest was generallyreserved forofficial headedstationary, matchday programmesand handbooks.

Following Arsenal's move north to Highburyin1913, it wasn'timmediately apparentthat the Clubwould embrace the Woolwich Arsenal legacyandkeep the cannon asa recognisable motif. The Clubsoon became just'Arsenal', the Great Waraffectedfootball forfour seasonsand recommencing in1919/20 normal football tooksome time tosettle. During all ofthis period there wasno sign of

a crestas such but, in the first matchdayprogramme ofthe 1922/23 season, when theGunnersplayed Burnley, a new club crest (2) wasrevealed - a fearsome looking cannon, thatwouldhave satproudly in the RoyalArsenal ofWoolwich.

As can be seen the vertical

cannonshave gone with the newdesign featuring a single eastwardpointing cannon. Whoeverdesigned this robustlookingweapon saw hishandiwork usedby the Club for justthree seasons

however, and forthe startof the 1925/26 season, the Gunnerschanged to a westward pointing, narrowercannon (3) with the legend 'The Gunners'remaining nextto it.

The derivation of the narrowercannon hasneverbeen officiallyconfirmed, butthe cannons on thecrest of the Royal Arsenal Gatehouse in Woolwich(4) are uncannilysimilar to thatused as theGunners symbol.

This cannon crest remained prominentin the

Arsenal matchdayprogramme and otherpublicationsfor 17 seasons. It changed slightlythrough the yearswith the wording eventuallydisappearing, but, despite being usurped by theVictoria Concordia Crescitcrest in 1949 ithasremained a basicsymbol of the Club ever since, featuring on official merchandise and stationarythroughoutthe yearsright up until the presentday.

The VCCcrest (5), which the new crestreplaces, has been Arsenal'ssymbol since appearing in thefirst new style magazine matchday programme of

season 1949/50. Itwould appear to have been inthe mindsof the Gunners hierarchyforat leastayear prior to this. In the final matchday programmeofthe 1947/48LeagueChampionshipwinningseason,'Marksman'(aka HarryHomer), theprogrammeeditor oftheday, wrote:

    "mymind

seeks an aptquotation withwhich to close thisseasonwhich hasbeen such agloriousone forTom

Whittaker, Joe Mercerand all connectedwith The Gunners.Shall we turn foronce to

Latin? 'Victoria Concordia Crescit'.Translation: 'Victorygrows outofharmony.'"

Two seasonslater and Arsenal unveiledits new crestwhich incorporatedMarksman'slatin maxim. Tom Whittaker

explained in the 1949/50 handbook(which alsoincluded the new crest) that the Club had beenimpressed by Marksman'smottoand ithad now been officiallyadopted bythe Club. The new crestalso featured 'Arsenal' in a gothicstyle typeface, the westward facingcannon, the Borough of Islington'scoatofarms and ermine.

Forthe past53 yearsthiscresthas remained largelyunchanged(6), though atthe start ofthe

2001/02 season it was 'cleanedup' somewhat (7) for commercialreasons, with a solid yellowreplacing the differenttones of goldand Victoria Concordia Crescitwritten in a lessornate typeface.

The Club's identityhasthus evolved over theyears and the decision to formulate a new crest (8)in 2002 wastwo-fold. Firstly, asthe VCCcrestincorporated many separate elementsintroducedover a number of years, there was uncertaintysurrounding its exactorigination. Consequently, the Club wasunable to copyrightthe VCCcrest.Secondly, ithad alwaysbeen one of the Club'sprimary objectivesto embrace the future and moveforward. With a new stadium onthe horizon and the Gunnersconsistentlychallenging for

domesticand European honours, the Club believed thatthis was theideal time to introduce a new crest.

Where it all began...the cannons can be seen ona stained glass window in Woolwich Town Hall

The move to North London wasdown to HenryNorris, who tookoverat Woolwich Arsenalwhile still chairman atFulham in 1910.His initial plan wasto merge Fulham andWoolwich Arsenal, butthe proposal wasrejected bythe Football League. He wasthentold bythe League thatit wasa conflict of

intereststo control both clubs, and so hechose to concentrate hisefforts on WoolwichArsenal the first London club to turnprofessional and the firstto be admitted tothe League. In 1912/13 though, Woolwich Arsenal, alreadyin desperate financial straits, wererelegated from Division One (forthe onlytime in the Clubs history) with a record lowofjust 18 points and 26 goals. In a bid to revive the Gunnersfortunes, andto increase the supporterbase, Norrisdecided to move the Club. Afteroriginallysounding out sites at Battersea andHarringay, he decided on a plotof land inHighbury, the site ofthe playing fields ofSt JohnsCollege of Divinity.Despite local opposition to the move, fromresidentsand other north London footballclubs, the deeds weresigned earlyin 1913.

Arsenal paid 20,000 fora 21-yearlease on sixacres ofland and, aspartof the deal, agreed not toplayat home onChristmasDayor GoodFriday. The collegeremained atthe southernend ofthe stadium until itburntdown at the end of

the Second World War.The Club droppedWoolwich from theirname during theseason following themove north oftheriver, butmuch work

had to be done atHighburybeforeArsenal could playtheirfirst game there. The new stadium wasdesigned byArchibaldLeitch, who alsodesigned stands forManchesterUnited,Chelsea, Everton,Liverpool, Tottenhamand Glasgow Rangers. The pitch waslevelled, a new grandstand waspartlybuilt, and turnstiles and terracing wereinstalled - all atgreat expense to Norris(laterSir HenryNorris). The main stand was onthe East side, and housed 9,000 spectators. The firstmatch wasa 2-1 victoryoverLeicesterFosse, on September6, 1913, with
