Virtual Huddersf ield are upgrading there 3 local webcams to give shoppers and visitors alike live moving HD images.

For nearly 15 years the webcams have provided new pictures every minute of the Huddersf ield Skyline, St.George?s Square and Holmfirth. The views constantly change with the weather, events and skyline and can be relied upon to show what is actually happening 24/7. They have always been extremely popular to gauge snow levels.

Whilst predominantly a service for local residents and visitors the webcams are watched from all over the world, with international e-complaints if not working.

The webcams predate smart phones and self ies so now have to be taken to the next level, which means moving HD images.

Holmfirth will be the f irst to trial the latest technology early next month.

There are also plans for a 4th webcam. The webcams and over 2000 local businesses can be found on www.virtualhuddersf ield.com.

As part of the Disabil i ty Sports Yorkshire Social Inclusion Project in Kirklees (DSY), DSY enrol led f ive Sports Ambassadors to support their work in Kirklees, and be role models to younger disabled people. Each of the f ive Ambassadors was referred to DSY by Real Employment.

Fiona Hall, project off icer, said:

?From previous experience of working with disabled people on an employment project, we were aware that traditional recruitment processes often eliminated people with learning disabilit ies, before they were given a chance. We wanted to give people a chance to show what they can do. Sport offers an opportunity for people to contribute, and to excel, without the need for traditional, academic aptitude. We?ve witnessed this almost as soon as our Ambassadors started on the programme.?

Funding from Kirklees Council Community Partnerships has enabled project staff to dedicate time to work alongside other partners in the area (Real Employment, The Job Centre, The Zone, Kirklees Active Leisure, the Sports Development Team, and West Yorkshire Sport) to tailor appropriate work based opportunities and volunteering opportunities for the

Ambassadors.

Jayne Lodge quote?

Working in partnership with DSY has proven to be a big success. By being given this opportunity our customers are able to

overcome the many barriers of the traditional recruitment process, in turn this means that they are able to further

develop in their confidence, self-esteem and employability skil ls.

I?m sure that the relationship that REAL have built with DSY will continue as both services endeavour to strive towards getting the best possible outcomes for our customers

KEEPING IT 'REAL'!!!

IT'S FAREWELL TO OUR FAVOURITE COMMUNITY RANGERWith the ongoing f inancial cutbacks within Kirklees Council . The Kirklees Community Rangers roles have unfortunately been phased out .

Will we therefore be losing our beloved Town Centre Ranger Monica Simpson, who has been a ranger for seven whole years. She is a well known community f igure and has been key player in the f ight against business crime and keeping key stakeholders abreast of happenings in the town.

However fear not, Monica may not necessary be a Ranger but we will certainly see Monica working in the Town Centre as an enforcement off icer for the Kirklees Parking Team. So if you were frightened of her before. Beware she'll be even more frightening as a traff ic warden! Wishing her all the best in her new role!

The organisers are keen to hear from anyone around the region who wishes to take part. The cost is £25 per person or £100 per team with any prof its going to the charity. The weekend of 10th &11th October, saw Kirklees Council host a Welcome to Huddersf ield weekend as part of a Nat ional compet it ion, TestTown 2015 organised by the Carnegie UK Trust . Huddersf ield was selected as one of 10 towns to take part . The weekend was created to encourage new university students to engage more in the town centre and explore some of the great things about our town. This included pop-up shops delivered by the Alternative Market and independent retailers and businesses partaking in a Welcome to Huddersf ield Student Trail which promoted a range of special offers over the duration of the weekend.

The Alternative Market put on a great marketplace event which involved some fantastic young entrepreneurs showcasing their products to impress a group of judges. One lucky young entrepreneur will now go forward to the National competit ion

representing Huddersf ield to hopefully win The UK Towns Entrepreneur of the Year? and an investment of £10K for their business. The judges consisted of Joe Harrison from the National Market Traders Association, Joe Barratt from Teenager Market, Gina Wilson from Test Town - The CarnegieUK Trust, Martin Green, Kirklees Council and Karen Hobson f rom Huddersf ield Partnership.

The weekend was a great success, Maria Cotton, Business & Development Manager for Kirklees Council who applied for the TestTown2015 competit ion said ?the weekend was designed to showcase our

Independent town centre businesses, showcase young entrepreneurs in vacant shops, encourage young musicians and performers into the town and the show the

town off to new students at the university, It was all about collaboration and showing what Huddersf ield has to offer. The judging team were overwhelmed by the talent

we have here in Huddersf ield as well as our wonderful independent shops. We are now looking forward to announcing the winner on 12 November and then seeing them go forward to Glasgow in the New Year for the grand f inal.?

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN CENTRE.... WE'RE STILL STRIVING ON!In a season where town centre's are considered to be in decl ine. Huddersf ield seems to be on the up! Though there have been a number of retai lers shut up shop in Huddersf ield, i t appears that when one unit closes another one opens or business relocates to a more prominent locat ion.

A key strength of Huddersf ield is it 's independent sector and this def initely shows with recently opening of a new Ladies Fashion store named 'HNGR' (Hanger abbreviated) on King Street adjacent to Wetherspoon's Lord Wilson. Opened by Stephen O'Callaghan HNGR is concept women's premium fashion store bringing Runway style fashions more akin to London or New York to Huddersf ield, something that hadn't existed in Huddersf ield town center until now and they very much want to would like to make a big noise about it. It will def initely give Moonson and House of Fraser a run for their money!!!

There has been some activity of Cross Church Street with opening of a new barbers and the relocation of Rosiyk Enterprise from Standard House on Sergeantson Street. There will also be the grand opening of Amplifon hearing aid specialists on Victoria Lane.on the 26th October.

MORE TOWN CENTRE ROAD CLOSURE INFORMATION FROM KIRKLEES COUNCIL!

15

Gas mains replacement works - It is worth pointing out that under current legislation Northern Gas Networks have a statutory right to maintain their apparatus under the highway but have a duty to try and do this with the minimum disruption to the travelling public and to businesses and residents.

Westgate ? Works are stil l ongoing, to be complete by the 30th of October in time for the carriageway patching works, but the traff ic management will be limited to a lane closure only. Two way traff ic will be maintained from now on and no temporary signals will be required.

King Street ? This remains on the programme for the 7th of February 2016 for 7 weeks between Queen Street and New Street on the pedestrianised section. It will involve numerous excavations within this area but pedestrian access will be maintained around the works and all access to shops will be maintained also. A Customer Service team will be visit ing all affected properties nearer the time to discuss and to try to resolve any issues they may have with the works.

Kirklees Council works ? These are all works related to the future implementation of the bus gate scheme now planned to come into force sometime in early February, a sheme designed to reduce the amount of traff ic within the town centre making it easier for public transport to operate and safer for pedestrians to move about within the town.

Kirkgate j/ o Venn Street ? Works to the pedestrian crossings are complete.

Westgate j/ o Upperhead Row ? Now programmed to commence on the 26th of October ? This will involve works within the islands only and only within one island a t a time with pedestrian diversions around the other islands in place. There will be no lane closures or impact on traff ic movements.

High Street /Ramsden Street /Peel Street ? Works started Sunday 11th October with a downhill closure of High Street during the week and on Sundays. The road will re-open every Saturday. Pedestrians will be able to continue to use the rear of the footways for access to shops etc. This will continue up until the 22nd of November. Works will then be suspended for the Christmas restriction and will re-start on Monday the 4th of January 2016 until approximately the end of March with similar restrictions until they get beyond the junction of Ramsden Street and Corporation Street. The works should then be managed with reduced footway widths but vehicular movement should stil l be able to happen.

The only City Fibre works (works to install superfast broadband to all council buildings and any other businesses wishing to take up the opportunity) within the town centre are now on High Street only working within our own road closure. Again, there are only reduced footway widths required and these works should be complete by the end of next week.

An update on events in the Town Centre

The Remembrance Day parade is the same as it?s been for the last few years and involves a procession along Victoria Lane, Ramsden Street, New Street, Market Place, Kirkgate and Byram Street to St Paul?s Church starting at 10 am for half an hour.
