Cutting Calories: consuming just 100

less calories a day may result in a

loss of 10 pounds in a year.

1. Make oil substitutions – use broth or cooking spray to keep foods moist and from sticking to the pan; 1 Tbs. of oil = 120 calories. 2. Cook your own food- this will give you better control over how many calories you are consuming compared to foods prepared by someone else or pre-packaged convenience foods. 3. Portion Size Counts –to avoid overeating, measure or weigh your portions and or use a smaller plate. 4. Beware of Condiments– ask for salad dressing, sauces and other condiments on the side. 1 serving of mayo = 100 calories. 5. Make Healthy Swaps – Use skim milk instead of whole, wheat crackers instead of butter crackers, order grilled chicken instead of breaded and enjoy frozen yogurt in lieu of ice cream. 6. Drinks can add up – water or zero calorie beverages are a sure thing. Avoid sodas, sweet tea, sugary sports drinks and fancy coffees. Choosing a clear alcohol with a low calorie mixer may have fewer calories than heavy beers and wines. 7. Eat Whole Fruits – they contain more nutrients, have less sugar and will fill you up more than fruit juices. 8. Eat with your non-dominant hand- This one might sound awkward, but if you are prone to eating too fast this will slow you down so you eat less.

Spring into Fitness at Morningside Activity vs. Exercise Many people wonder if there is a difference between activity and exercise – yes, there is. Physical activities get your body moving and include things such as walking the dog, gardening and taking the stairs instead of an elevator. Exercise is activity that is specifically planned, structured and repetitive such as weight training, water exercise, spinning and jogging. It’s important to include both exercise and activity in your daily life to provide you with health benefits that can help you feel better and enjoy life more as you age.

Pickle Ball Don’t be fooled by the silly name – once you play you’ll keep coming back for more. Although it’s now one of the most popular sports in the U.S., pickle ball was invented back in 1965. Pickle ball combines elements of badminton, tennis and ping pong. The court is smaller than a tennis court and the net is 2 inches lower than a tennis net. The game can be played in either singles or doubles matches and is easy for beginners to learn. Pickle ball is not only fun, it has many health benefits too. Playing pickle ball: can improve balance and agility, is considered aerobic exercise, thus provides cardiovascular benefits, tones muscles, increases energy, requires brain focus and concentration and is a social sport where you will make friends. Playing at moderate intensity in a singles game an average person can burn 500-600 calories per hour.

Join us out at the tennis Courts on Monday, May 22nd at 6:30 pm to learn more About Morningside Pickle Ball!

Water Aerobics Water aerobics classes are held in the indoor pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:00 am. Classes are coed class and open to all residents and best of all they are free. Each class lasts 35-40 minutes and includes muscle toning (using water weights), aerobics and range of motion exercise. Appropriate swimwear required, water shoes recommended. Average person (150 -160 lbs) will burn approximately 150 calories doing 30 min. of water exercise Water Volleyball takes place on Sunday evenings at 6:30 pm – also a great way to burn calories!

Golf The Morningside golfers will hit the links on Wednesday mornings beginning May 17th. Golfers experience the challenges of a different course each week. Contact Greg and Beth Ewing if you are interested in playing……and burning up a few calories (300 cal per hour using a cart –again for this is based on a 150-160 lb. person) Another golf option takes place on the 3rd Sunday of each month when Morningside residents play a par 3 course in North Olmsted and then enjoy dinner as a group following play. Walking, biking, bocce and horseshoe playing opportunities are also available on campus and in

the neighborhood.

“You can’t help getting older, but you don’t

have to get old.” George Burns

President’s Corner by Mike Huesman Welcome to an interesting Spring 2017! We had a relatively mild winter followed by a wet spring. Morningside enjoyed early warm temperatures, only to be stressed by record high, damaging winds and we then struggled through some late bouts of snow and cold. Recent winds were so strong that one of the East entrance signs had to be repaired; another was damaged beyond repair and was removed. Other wind damage included the loss of several large pine trees, common area tree damage and a tilted stop sign. But spring now allows us to kick off some much-needed maintenance projects. The first of these is major repairs and a recoating of all our campus asphalt walkways (nearly one mile in overall length). We also have repairs planned for leaks in our front fountain and in our outdoor pool skimmer. As the facilities and equipment age, it is important that we keep up with many preventative maintenance initiatives; to this point the Board has authorized a new Reserve Study to ensure that we understand, plan for and fund our long-term maintenance and repairs. Other projects currently under consideration include stonework repairs to the retention pond culverts, front fountain and other stonework areas, as well as improvements to several amenity areas, our irrigation system and common area development. And what would spring be without a few surprises? Pool certification and inspection, previously done by the City of Lorain, now falls under the jurisdiction of Lorain County. This change over brings with it new guidelines for certification and several costly new requirements: new signage & safety warnings, an emergency phone at the outdoor pool and reconfiguration of several aspects of our pump room. Another surprise came from KHovnanian who initiated an ownership name change for all Morningside utilities. Sounds easy, not really. Although the HOA and COA have been paying the utility bills for several years, the account names had not been changed. The onset of this process caused some anxious disconnection moments and hours of leg work dealing with each utility provider. Thankfully this process has been successfully completed and we can move ahead without concern. Finally, we have expanded the open, monthly Board meeting agendas to include virtually all topics under discussion. KareCondo now produces our Board meeting minutes in a concise and focused format; minutes may be accessed on our website at morning-side.com. The Board wishes to thank all Committee chairs and members for their ongoing hard work and dedication. It also wishes to remind all residents to become familiar with the Bylaws and Rules

(also available on our website) that govern our community; your compliance is essential.

Morningside is a wonderful neighborhood and we all need to work together to maintain our high standards.
