CONSECRATED STEWARDS FIRST OFFERING SUNDAY!
Every journey begins with a first step. In April we asked everyone to prayerfully con-sider how to respond to the call to REFLECT, REJOICE, AND RENEW in our steward-ship commitments as Consecrated Stewards. On May 22nd—FIRST OFFERING SUN-DAY—we ask those who are able, to begin their new commitments with their first offer-ings. If you are not able to begin your commitment at this time, please set a date when
you plan to take your next step forward.
Thanks, again, to ALL who have participated in our Consecrated Stewards emphasis.

The School Year Marathon April 18th marked this
year's 120th running of the Boston Marathon. The training, focus, and performance of a marathon runner likens that of a student's school year. The runner needs to prepare a training plan that in-cludes diet, sprints, distance runs, and strength ex-ercises. The training plan can only be successful if the runner focuses on each part of the plan. Like-wise, our school year has components that train students to be well-rounded, loving Christians. Our daily diet of reading, writing, and arithmetic feeds our students with academic knowledge, while our daily diet of religion feeds their soul. These four "Rs" along with the field trips, long term projects, and "recesses" form an educational ath-lete that is equipped to perform in today's world. So, what does Our Savior's spring training look like? The field trip aspect is in full force. The fourth grade has been studying Virginia history this year and their next field trip has them visiting Arlington Cemetery & Lee House. The third, fourth, and fifth grades are heading out to visit the Washington, DC memorials and President sites as a follow-up to their study of the U. S. Presidents this year. Black Rock Retreat Center will once again host the 6th graders for a three-day science camp. The seventh grade will be doing a three-day servant experience entitled "Being a Servant for God and Country". Finally, the eighth grade will be celebrating their educational experience at Our Savior by embark-ing on their annual visit to New York City.
The long term project training has also been happening. The school's annual Science Fair will be held on Thursday, April 28, at 2:00 PM. The judges will be evaluating the student projects (submitted by grades 4,6,8) in the morning; and the student body, parents, and guests are invit-ed to attend the afternoon event. Music is in the air as the classes and BASIC choir are practic-ing for the May 26 Spring Concert. Please mark your calendar to join us for this wonderful event organized by Mrs. Sterner. Our AIMA instru-mental students are also preparing for their dis-trict spring concert being held on May 3 and their school concert on May 31.
Art Talks is a "quiet" educational experience offered each month by Mrs. Battaglia. During a 10-minute visit to each classroom, she shares the work of a famous artist. Dale Chihuly, Joan Miro, and Robert Scott Duncanson have been a few of the artists featured this year. Hopefully, you saw the colorful "mobile" hung in the Fel-lowship Hall this past fall. It was a middle school art project based on the work of Dale Chihuly. Please share the news about our educational "training facility" with your friends and family. We will be having another Open House this spring on Thursday, April 28, from 9:00-11:00 in the morning and again from 6:00-8:00 in the evening. Enrollment information may also be obtained by calling the office or downloaded from the osva.org website. Finally, I encourage you to continue to don your running shoes and be part of the OS team. Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure have allowed our school ministry to flourish for 63 years -- Thank You!

THANK YOU, MISS HEDRICK!
Miss Hedrick, our first grade teacher, will be leaving our area this summer to pursue a new career path. Her ministry has been a blessing to our church and school. For the past three years, Miss Hedrick has nurtured young children by teaching them about Jesus's love and the joy of reading. In addition, her leadership on the OSSM team has allowed her to mentor the young people of our con-gregation. We give thanks to God for her time with us and grant His blessings and guidance on her future.

AFAC needs your help to spread the word about the Letter Carriers food drive on Saturday, May 14th.
On Saturday, May 14, you can leave a bag of non-perishable food donations next to your mailbox by 9:00 AM, and your Arlington letter carrier will deliver the food to AFAC, the Ar-lington Food Assistance Center. If you live in an apartment building or miss your letter carrier, donations can also be made at the North, South, Main, Shirlington, and Preston King post offices. AFAC's goal is to collect 35,000 pounds of food. Most needed items include low sodium canned soup, tuna, tomato products and beans and low sugar cereal. AFAC thanks the National Association of Letter Carriers and Arling-ton residents for helping to Stamp Out Hunger! For more in-formation, go to www.afac.org or call 703-845-8486. Hunger does not take a break! AFAC is al-ways in need of some basic pantry items: canned tomato products, canned soup, canned tuna/chicken, pasta, rice and low-sugar cereal. Coffee Hour Hosts needed for the summer! We know summer is often busy but hopefully also a little re-laxing. If you would have time to host one coffee hour be-tween now and August we would be most appreciative! Just a reminder that coffee hour does not need to be elaborate and complicated, just a little snack for folks as they take time for some fellowship! Also, you don’t have to do it alone, make it a family affair or ask another family to help out! Questions?? Contact Lori Bodling

O S L C O N N E C T I O N S
According to the US Department of State, “a sense of uniformity per-vaded American society” during the 1950s. Men and women had been forced into new employment patterns during the war, but when over, traditional roles were reaffirmed. Television also contributed to the sense of uniformity by providing young and old with a shared ex-perience with shows such as I Love Lucy and The Mickey Mouse Club making their debut. However, not all Americans conformed to these cultural norms, the “beat generation” emerged and musicians and artists such as Elvis Presley and Jackson Pollock came onto the
scene. Science was in the forefront when the Double Helix DNA Model was revealed, the first polio vaccine was developed and the first microchip was invented. Unfortunately, war still affected the world with the Korean War and closer to home, the civil rights movement began with Rosa Parks’ arrest in 1955.
In our corner of the world, the focus on our “physical plant” continued. According to a document in our archives, OSLC had been active in the field of real property for four basic purposes (1) church sanctuary, (2) parsonage, (3) parochial school, and (4) future expansion. Last month we touched on the 1942 purchase of the lot at 821 South Taylor Street which then held our first church building which was dedicated in 1943. The parsonage, located at 900 South Taylor Street was acquired in 1944 and sold in 1948 as a new parsonage had been built. In order to meet the needs of both the church and the parochial school, the purchase of the parcel adjoining the church lot was authorized in 1952. A construction contract for the first enlargement of the church was authorized and the new church was dedicated in 1953. In early 1956 the Voters adopted a resolution to expand the school building to 4 classrooms which was completed by the fall of 1956.
In early 1950 the first telephone was installed in the church and a recommendation was made to hold two services on Sunday instead of just one. In the beginning of 1951, the Mission Board subsidy was ended making us fully self-supporting. In 1952 a Falls Church mission was started and they orga-nized as a congregation in early 1953 as Falls Church Lutheran. In 1956 a Springfield area mission held its first service with 6 members of our congregation as charter members, this church is now known as St. John Lutheran Church. In September 1957 Pastor Kavasch was granted a peaceful re-lease and George Wehmeyer became our Pastor in 1958.
In 1951 we celebrated our 10 year anniversary. In 1952 we started our kindergarten with 35 stu-dents. In 1953 we hired our first principal and by 1959 we had 143 students in grades K through 6. Our first PTA was organized in 1952. The May 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v Board of Education generated discussion at the Voters' Meeting in June regarding the possible effect on our church school. Salk anti-polio shots were given to our students in October 1955 and a school bus was purchased in 1957.
The focus of the 1950s included the two mission churches and building our school. With the turbu-lent 60s coming next month, what will we learn about our history?
